A follow-up to the award-winning author’s acclaimed selected poems, this new collection continues Barwin’s examination of the possibilities of the poem: a celebration, a story, an investigation, a riff, a word machine, a parable, a transformation. But what are the “most charming creatures” of the title? In 1862, scientific illustrator Ernst Haeckel termed radiolarians (ancient single-celled organisms with mineral skeletons) “the most charming creatures,” but here Barwin turns the microscope around to consider something just as strange and mysterious: language, our culture, and the self. From microorganisms, onion rings, grief, and Gerard Manley Hopkins to beetles, neoliberalism, sandwiches, Martin Luther, and stand-up comedy, he offers: “it’s a miracle that we’ve survived / it’s a miracle that we’ve survived at all.”

Bright Water is an illustrated modern fairy tale, a mythopoetic, autofictional narrative. Part spirit memoir, part origin myth, Bright Water weaves personal, ancestral, and imagined histories through my queer and indigenous lens. 
The book is illustrated with my off-the-canvas works, spanning ceramics, textiles, and sculpture, including three bodies of work: Cinderella Far East ceramics, Virgin Mermaid wearable art, and QUAI THAI sculptures. Bright Water is my salvaged stream of consciousness, the river of thoughts within me, and the meaning of my name… 
For Someone who has no mother or father, I do have a name. 
It was given to me by the song of the past—

He hunted, trapped, rode his buckskin mare Old Beauty, slept under the stars, and cooked supper over an open camp fire. He is a real American patriot. While Ronald worked his way through college, he lived at home with his precious mother, Mary, and father, Victor. 
What a blessing it was for God to have chosen them for his parents. For a time, he worked in Venezuela where he met his wife, Barb. He has traveled in South and Central America, and Europe. Ronald's inspirational poetry is straight from his heart and represents a true appreciation for creation and God's works along with life's experiences and personal observations.
