Sinopsis

In "The Flying Inn," G. K. Chesterton weaves a richly satirical narrative that critiques the encroachment of a dull rationalism on society and its traditions. Set in an alternate England where the government introduces restrictive measures against alcohol and traditional cultures, the tale follows the spirited journey of an innkeeper and a roguish poet as they traverse the land with a portable bar. Chesterton's stylistic hallmark—characterized by sharp wit, whimsical dialogue, and vivid imagery—encapsulates the tension between orthodoxy and progressivism while painting a vibrant tableau of early 20th-century life and its absurdities, thus situating the work within the broader context of England's cultural and political shifts during that era. Chesterton, a prolific writer and noted social critic, drew upon his own experiences of the rapid societal changes of his time, which often inspired his exploration of themes revolving around faith, tradition, and personal liberty. His background as a journalist and a public intellectual fueled his passion for debating perceived injustices, allowing him to channel both humor and provocation into a narrative that celebrates the joys of conviviality amidst the threat of sterility. Readers seeking both amusement and reflection on the role of tradition in modern life will find "The Flying Inn" an indispensable addition to their literary collection. Through its delightful characters and engaging story, Chesterton invites us to ponder the value of preserving cultural identity, making this work a resonant exploration of themes that remain relevant today.

'I was riveted and charmed by this funny, humane and poignant novel. It's written in a voice that is as ardent as it is sensitive, one marked by history and yet managing to remain beautifully unruly and independent.'
    – Hisham Matar, author of My Friends and The Return

In an East London housing office, a frustrated local government employee spends his days trying to figure out what the latest policy announcement means for both himself and the migrants he works with every day. As a favour to a friend, he finds himself roped into organizing the funeral of Ghiyath, a young Syrian refugee. But it is not until his life collides with Ghiyath's death that he realises just how much he has in common with those who've fallen through the cracks.

Told with a wry cynicism and deadpan wit, On the Greenwich Line traces the absurdities of racism, austerity, and bureaucracy in contemporary England. This is a story about systemic failure and human courage, and about London and its many lost souls.

Look for Wreck, the new novel by Catherine Newman—a deeply moving story of laughter and heart, about marriage, family, and what happens when life doesn’t go as planned—Coming October 2025.
“Catherine Newman sees the heartbreak and comedy of life with wisdom and unflinching compassion. The way she finds the extraordinary in the everyday is nothing short of poetry. She’s a writer’s writer—and a human’s human.”—New York Times bestselling author Katherine Center
“A riotously funny and fiercely loyal love letter to female friendship. The story of Edi and Ash proves that a best friend is a gift from the gods. Newman turns her prodigious talents toward finding joy even in the friendship’s final days. I laughed while crying, and was left revived. Newman is a comic masterhand and a dazzling philosopher of the day-to-day.”—Amity Gaige, author of Sea Wife
“The funniest, most joyful book about dying—and living—that I have ever read.”—KJ Dell'Antonia, author of the New York Times bestselling The Chicken Sisters
For lovers of Meg Wolitzer, Maria Semple, and Jenny Offill comes this raucous, poignant celebration of life, love, and friendship at its imperfect and radiant best.
Edith and Ashley have been best friends for over forty-two years. They’ve shared the mundane and the momentous together: trick or treating and binge drinking; Gilligan’s Island reruns and REM concerts; hickeys and heartbreak; surprise Scottish wakes; marriages, infertility, and children. As Ash says, “Edi’s memory is like the back-up hard drive for mine.”
But now the unthinkable has happened. Edi is dying of ovarian cancer and spending her last days at a hospice near Ash, who stumbles into heartbreak surrounded by her daughters, ex(ish) husband, dear friends, a poorly chosen lover (or two), and a rotating cast of beautifully, fleetingly human hospice characters.
As The Fiddler on the Roof soundtrack blasts all day long from the room next door, Edi and Ash reminisce, hold on, and try to let go. Meanwhile, Ash struggles with being an imperfect friend, wife, and parent—with life, in other words, distilled to its heartbreaking, joyful, and comedic essence.
For anyone who’s ever lost a friend or had one. Get ready to laugh through your tears.

Travelling is something most of us do perfectly well. It often involves a stroll in the park or sojourn in the sun.
Dominic Ryan, for reasons unfamiliar with common sense, is more likely to find himself facing down charging hippos on the Zambezi or tracking angry Namibian cheetahs in a vintage aeroplane.
There is little in the way of logic in his backpack as he tumbles into a war zone in Ukraine or tries to save a Malaysian rainforest by chasing bats.
Is The Back of Beyond a memoir, travelogue or cry for help? It’s all of the above and by turns fascinating and funny, thrilling and thoughtful.
As a wise genie probably once said, wandering and wondering are the same worthy pursuit: it’s just one has an ‘ah!’ and the other an ‘oh!’.
If you dare venture to The Back of Beyond, gird your khaki-clad loins for an abundance of both . . . and even the occasional ‘ooh’!
