Sinopse

In 'Magic,' G. K. Chesterton explores the intersection of the mundane and the mystical, weaving together essays that illuminate the enchantment hidden within everyday life. Through a blend of whimsical prose and profound philosophical inquiry, Chesterton delves into the nature of magic as it manifests in various cultural contexts, examining its capacity to reveal the wonder in the ordinary. The literary style is distinctly Chestertonian—richly rhetorical, filled with paradoxes, and imbued with a playful tone that invites the reader to reconsider familiar assumptions, making it a compelling read amidst the early 20th-century backdrop of skepticism and scientific rationalism. G. K. Chesterton, a prominent English writer, and thinker, was known for his keen observations on faith, society, and the human experience. His own background in journalism and literary criticism, along with a lifelong fascination with the supernatural and the absurd, informed his approach to 'Magic.' His conversion to Christianity and deep appreciation for tradition lend a unique perspective on the concept of magic, intertwining it with themes of spirituality and wonder. This book is highly recommended for readers intrigued by the intersection of philosophy and literature. Chesterton's rich language and insightful observations will resonate with those seeking to rediscover the magic in their own lives, urging them to look beyond the veil of the ordinary and embrace the fantastical elements often overlooked in modern society.

Lady Eleanor Furneaux Smith was born in Birkenhead, Merseyside in England on the 7th August 1902 into a privileged family steeped in titles and politics.

Part of her education was at Miss Douglas's school at Queen's Gate. Here she met and befriended several other young women that the British tabloid press would later call the ‘Bright Young Things’, a group of bohemian young aristocrats and socialites in 1920s London.

Smith's paternal great-grandmother, was said to have been a Gypsy, and this sparked an early and life-long interest with the Romani people, she even went so far as to learn to read and speak the language, which she called ‘musical and broken.’

Her life was full of adventure and mishaps. A mistaken encounter with a man she thought could help her into the film business turned out to threats of marriage and death from a man wanted for the murder of his father. She was even arrested twice. Once for listing her career as a journalist and another, in Rome, for walking around in a sleeveless dress.

Smith began her career writing society gossip columns for various newspapers but later received an offer to write for the newly-formed Great Carmo Circus, with which she travelled for several years and was the source material for many of her books.

Her first novel, ‘Red Wagon’, was published when she was 28 and it was an immediate bestseller. A prolific writer several of her works were also adapted for films.

Smith also wrote ghost stories and others flavoured with evil. Her support for the Conservative party may be forgiven but her attributed quote to be a ‘warm adherent of General Franco’ less so.

Lady Eleanor Furneaux Smith died on the 20th October 1945 in Westminster after a long illness. She was 43.

Spooky. Weird. and a tale well told as Wilkie Collins does so well.
A medical man who had gone to another town for a consultation encountered a hotel landlord and heard a rather odd tale about an old man in his employ. This man would only sleep during the day because of horrible dreams that plagued him at night. The medical man’s interest was piqued believing he may be able to help this man, so he asked the landlord to tell him everything he knew about this man’s past life. Over lunch, the medical man settled in to hear the “extravagant and incredible” story from the landlord. And as he spoke, the story within a story began.
If you’re not quite a horror fan, but enjoy spooky little tales, try this one.

Short stories have always been a sort of instant access into an author’s brain, their soul and heart. A few pages can lift our lives into locations, people and experiences with a sweep of landscape, narration, feelings and emotions that is difficult to achieve elsewhere.

In this series we try to offer up tried and trusted ‘Top Tens’ across many different themes and authors. But any anthology will immediately throw up the questions – Why that story? Why that author?

The theme itself will form the boundaries for our stories which range from well-known classics, newly told, to stories that modern times have overlooked but perfectly exemplify the theme. Throughout the volume our authors whether of instant recognition or new to you are all leviathans of literature.

Some you may disagree with but they will get you thinking; about our choices and about those you would have made. If this volume takes you on a path to discover more of these miniature masterpieces then we have all gained something.

In this volume close encounters of a spectral kind come to visit and offer us their stories through the pens of such literary masters as Alexander Pushkin, Oscar Wilde, Amelia Edwards, Washington Irving and many others can.

The excellence of their story-telling craft makes each story a journey into certain and unsettling fear.
