Heroic Epics brings together three of the most enduring mythological traditions in a single volume, illuminating the timeless stories of legendary figures whose deeds echo through the ages. This 3-in-1 collection explores the chivalrous world of The Arthurian Legends, the ancient struggles of The Epic of Gilgamesh, and the powerful, storm-laden sagas of Norse Myths Unveiled. Each tale reveals the values, fears, and aspirations of the cultures that gave them life—offering readers both entertainment and deep historical insight.
Step into the mystical realm of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, where honor, love, and betrayal shape the fate of Camelot. Encounter familiar figures like Merlin, Lancelot, and Guinevere as they face trials of loyalty, power, and destiny. Then journey even further back in time to ancient Mesopotamia in The Epic of Gilgamesh, one of humanity’s oldest recorded stories. Follow the mighty king of Uruk on his quest for immortality, friendship, and meaning in a world shaped by gods and fate.
Finally, Norse Myths Unveiled dives into the chilling, awe-inspiring world of Viking mythology—where gods like Odin, Thor, and Loki roam among giants, monsters, and warriors. These tales pulse with prophecy, epic battles, and the ultimate fate of the cosmos: Ragnarök. Heroic Epics offers a thrilling ride through centuries of storytelling and the powerful archetypes that continue to inspire modern fantasy and heroic fiction.

In his impassioned-yet-measured book, Rafael A. Mangual offers an incisive critique of America's increasingly radical criminal justice reform movement, and makes a convincing case against the pursuit of "justice" through mass-decarceration and depolicing. After a summer of violent protests in 2020—sparked by the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Rayshard Brooks—a dangerously false narrative gained mainstream acceptance: Criminal justice in the United States is overly punitive and racially oppressive. But, the harshest and loudest condemnations of incarceration, policing, and prosecution are often shallow and at odds with the available data. And the significant harms caused by this false narrative are borne by those who can least afford them: black and brown people who are disproportionately the victims of serious crimes. In Criminal (In)Justice, Rafael A. Mangual offers a more balanced understanding of American criminal justice, and cautions against discarding traditional crime control measures. A powerful combination of research, data-driven policy journalism, and the author's lived experiences, this book explains what many reform advocates get wrong, and illustrates how the misguided commitment to leniency places America's most vulnerable communities at risk. The stakes of this moment are incredibly high. Ongoing debates over criminal justice reform have the potential to transform our society for a generation—for better or for worse. Grappling with the data—and the sometimes harsh realities they reflect—is the surest way to minimize the all-too-common injustices plaguing neighborhoods that can least afford them.

A searing portrait of a country in disarray and of the man at its helm, from "the bravest of Russian journalists" (The New York Times)Hailed as "a lone voice crying out in a moral wilderness" (New Statesman), Anna Politkovskaya made her name with her fearless reporting on the war in Chechnya. Here, she turned her steely gaze on the multiple threats to Russian stability, among them Vladimir Putin himself.Rich with characters and poignant accounts, Putin's Russia depicts a far-reaching state of decay. Politkovskaya describes an army in which soldiers die from malnutrition, parents must pay bribes to recover their dead sons' bodies, and conscripts are even hired out as slaves. She exposes rampant corruption in business, government, and the judiciary, where everything from store permits to bus routes to court appointments is for sale. And she offers a scathing condemnation of the war in Chechnya, where kidnappings, extra-judicial killings, rape, and torture beget terrorism rather than fighting it. Finally, Politkovskaya denounces both Putin, for stifling civil liberties as he pushes the country back to a Soviet-style dictatorship, and the West, for its unqualified embrace of the Russian leader.Sounding an urgent alarm, Putin's Russia is a gripping portrayal of a country in crisis and the testament of a great and intrepid reporter, who received death threats and survived assassination attempts for her scathing criticism of the Kremlin. Tragically, on October 7, 2006, Politkovskaya was shot and found dead in an elevator in her Moscow apartment building. After several years of investigations, five men were imprisoned for her murder.

We’re coming to understand that life in this world is that of an extended family, not just from a human perspective, but from all manner and forms of sentient organisms. The purpose of Survive is not to enumerate the processes of every kind of life up the evolutionary tree, from bacteria to humans, but to look for the common denominators on that tree and to explore what motivators of all life forms share with greater emphasis placed on primates in general, but humans in particular throughout the journey of this book. And, although the concept of survival is evident in a biological sense, it expands far beyond simple physical survival for the human being. The questions of psychological, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual survival, as well as the overriding question of identity all play a role. Who is the “me” that is fighting to survive? That is the existential question we struggle consciously or unconsciously to address.

Generations of Americans have regarded schools as essential for developing the knowledge and civic values necessary for sustaining democracy. Yet, as Matthew D. Nelsen argues in The Color of Civics, traditional approaches to civic education are not living up to their promise for many students, particularly students of color from disadvantaged communities.

Drawing on lessons from students and teachers in Chicago, The Color of Civics reimagines the democratic purpose of civic education. Nelsen's findings challenge some of the most widely cited civic education research, arguing that the content of traditional civic education courses privileges the political experiences of white political actors, and in turn, contributes to divergent political behaviors and participatory outcomes across racial and ethnic groups. He presents a new approach to civic education that aims to foster political empowerment by centering historically-grounded conversations about current events as well as critical categories of knowledge—those that highlight the agency of marginalized groups. This approach increases rates of political participation among young people of color and heightens political empathy among white youth. Nelsen also explores how the attitudes and lived experiences of teachers drive the implementation of more empowering civic learning environments.
