Sinopse

"I am a sick man… I am a spiteful man." These chilling opening words mark the beginning of Notes from the Underground, Fyodor Dostoyevsky's groundbreaking novel that delves into the mind of a tormented, self-destructive narrator. Considered one of the first existentialist works, this philosophical and psychological masterpiece explores human free will, suffering, and the irrationality of human nature.

Set in 19th-century Russia, the novel follows an unnamed narrator—an isolated and bitter former government worker—who retreats underground, rejecting societal norms and rational thought. Through a deeply introspective monologue, he explores themes of free will, alienation, self-loathing, and the contradictions of human behavior. Dostoyevsky's antihero struggles with his own logic and emotions, revealing the paradoxes of human psychology and civilization.

A precursor to modern existentialism, this novel questions the foundations of rationalism, utopianism, and morality. It forces readers to confront the uncomfortable truths about human nature, suffering, and self-destruction.

One of the most influential existentialist novels, inspiring writers such as Nietzsche, Sartre, and Camus.
Dostoyevsky's masterpiece of psychological realism, praised for its depth and philosophical intensity.
Considered essential reading in literature, philosophy, and psychology courses worldwide.

Brilliantly disturbing yet profoundly insightful, Notes from the Underground is a must-read for those who appreciate deep philosophical inquiry, psychological drama, and timeless existential dilemmas. Step into the mind of Dostoyevsky's tormented narrator and experience a literary journey unlike any other.

"... A rollicking send-up of Abrahamic origin stories, featuring a tough, sharp-tongued mother of humankind....Lowell’s irreverent counter-mythology feels like a sardonic revamp of Paradise Lost, taking a very flawed Eve through a gonzo redemption arc toward responsibility and selflessness.... [His] prose is punchy and raucous: 'You gotta admit we’ve had some crazy fun times together,' chortles Serpent to Eve, reminiscing about her time with him in hell. 'Like when I barbecued all those little freaks of nature out in Andromeda….God knows what those things were, but they hopped like corn kernels in a hot skillet.'" — Kirkus Reviews
Eve is an eighteen-year-old spitfire in the Garden of Eden with an inverted moral compass and a comedically twisted view of the world.
After having discovered a great truth about the universe from Satan, who calls himself Serpent, she decides to sneak into higher realms of consciousness and wants him to join her. He agrees, but part of the deal is that Eve reincarnates on Earth to perform a task for him first. After this last hurrah, which takes place in the ancient colony of Atlantis, he’ll gladly join her. However, her assignment ends up causing all of human civilization a tremendous amount of suffering.
Despite fulfilling her end of the bargain, Serpent reneges on his promise. Feeling betrayed, Eve reincarnates on Earth once again, only this time seeking to serve God rather than Serpent. By this point on Earth, a powerful secret society has taken control of the world, and Eve will need the help of her human father to expose the group by hacking into worldwide media conglomerates.
She should be cautious, though, because the people she has hurt in the past will show up now to torment her. Will she succeed in trying to expose the secret society? And will she ever be able to fully abandon Serpent, or will she seek vengeance against him for tricking her? [Contains some graphic violence, no romance].

Travis Johnson attended the speed-dating event during Chestnut Springs's Octoberfest and got exactly two phone numbers. One woman's already told him there's no spark between them.
    Ouch.
    The other has a boyfriend.
    Double ouch.
But when Travis spots Millie at his brother's wedding, he learns she broke up with that other guy.
    Perfect.
Gathering his courage, he asks her to dance, only to have his brother point out they're swaying under the mistletoe. So Travis does the only thing he can—he kisses Millie.
Millie Hepworth plans parties for a living, and Travis is crazy-busy on the ranch with his brother off on his honeymoon. So he does the only thing he can think of to keep Millie close.
He hires her to plan a Christmas party for him and his brothers out at Chestnut Ranch.
    No big deal.
He forgot about the part where he works constantly and doesn't have much to say, especially to a successful, sassy woman like Millie. Oh, and the part where his mother has always hosted the Christmas party...
    Oops.
This is why cowboys should never kiss under the mistletoe.

This antiquarian book contains Alexandre Dumas's 1846 novel, "Captain Paul". A romantic romp of brave heroes, devious villains, desperate battles, and true love, this epic tale of high adventure and daring-do is highly recommended for fans of Dumas's work, and would make for a fantastic addition to any bookshelf. The novel is loosely based on the exploits of John Paul Jones, a captain in the American Navy during the revolutionary war. Alexandre Dumas (1802-1870) was a famous French writer. He is best remembered for his exciting romantic sagas, including "The Three Musketeers" and "The Count of Monte Cristo". Despite making a great deal of money from his writing, Dumas was almost perpetually penniless thanks to his veritably extravagant lifestyle. His novels have been translated into nearly a hundred different languages, and have inspired over 200 motion pictures. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing this antiquarian book in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author.
