Addressing the philosophy of pleasure, Sheen reminds the reader of the centrality of self-discipline and detachment. At the heart of the Way to Happiness is heroically living out the spirit of charity: love of God and love of neighbor. To achieve a spirit of service and self-donation, a strong interior life is a perequisite. True peace is born in meditation.Lastly, Sheen provides a blueprint to overcome bad habits through introspection, avoiding the occasion of sin, willing the good, and a right philosophy of life. In an age when so few people have time to make a retreat, allow the retreat master, Sheen, to take you on a spiritual journey that will spur you on to holiness. Many men sense a growing desire for a more robust spiritual life, to walk with God and to be used by Him. They long for meaning and purpose and a life that impacts eternity. They long to matter. Men are increasingly weary of a worldly culture’s constant assault on their families, their churches, and their manhood. They yearn to do something, to be God’s man, but they remain uncertain of what that something is or even how to begin. They hear the resounding higher call to be God’s man, the man for the day, and to courageously yield to be used by God however He chooses. In The Man for the Day, J. Josh Smith walks through the life of Elijah to reveal ten qualities needed in the pursuit of a life that matters. Smith invites men to boldly lead their families, churches, and communities, to meet the needs of the day for the glory of God. We need not limp through life with the feelings of indifference and insignificance. We need not settle. Our Maker has called us to more. Smith issues the challenge to us all that during these days of increasing hardship and decay, our times need godly men, and our God wants men to be The Man for the Day.

The Holy Roman Empire traces its origins to a time of shifting power dynamics, spiritual authority, and the enduring legacy of Rome. It was neither wholly holy, Roman, nor an empire in the traditional sense, but it stood as a significant political and spiritual entity in European history for nearly a millennium. The story begins with the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476 CE, which left a power vacuum in Europe. Centuries later, Charlemagne, King of the Franks, would revive the idea of a Roman imperium in the West. In the year 800, Pope Leo III crowned Charlemagne as Emperor of the Romans, symbolically linking his rule to the legacy of ancient Rome and establishing a precedent for divine sanction of imperial authority.
While Charlemagne’s empire did not last beyond his heirs, his imperial title endured in memory and ambition. The true foundations of the Holy Roman Empire, however, are often credited to Otto I, Duke of Saxony, who became King of East Francia in 936. Through military successes and strong alliances with the Church, Otto consolidated his power. In 962, he was crowned Emperor by Pope John XII, an act widely regarded as the formal beginning of the Holy Roman Empire. Otto’s coronation re-established the notion of a Christian emperor in the West and initiated a tradition that would persist for centuries.
This early period also marked the beginning of what would become a recurring struggle between secular rulers and the papacy for supremacy. The Investiture Controversy, though it would fully erupt later, had its roots in the growing tensions between emperors who believed they had the right to appoint bishops and popes who insisted on spiritual independence. This rivalry between church and state would shape the development of the empire’s political structure, often blurring the lines between religious and secular authority.

Step into the compelling narrative of the Book of Susanna, an evocative and powerful addition to the Book of Daniel in the Greek Septuagint and Latin Vulgate. This text, often regarded as a standalone story in the Apocrypha, unfolds the tale of Susanna, a virtuous and devout woman facing a grave ordeal. Meet Susanna, a paragon of virtue and faith, who becomes the target of deceit and lust by two corrupt elders. Her story is a poignant exploration of themes like righteousness under trial, the perversion of justice, and the vindication of the innocent. It showcases her unwavering commitment to integrity and faithfulness, even in the face of false accusations and the threat of death. Witness the dramatic courtroom scene where Susanna's fate hangs in the balance. The story reaches its climax with the sudden intervention of the young prophet Daniel, who, guided by divine wisdom, uncovers the truth and exposes the malicious deceit of the elders, thus saving Susanna from an unjust execution. As a revered narrative in certain Christian denominations and an esteemed example of the apocryphal books of the Bible, the Book of Susanna invites readers on an enlightening journey. Its riveting story and deep moral teachings continue to resonate, offering a window into the complexities of human nature, the struggle for righteousness, and the unwavering presence of divine justice. This text stands as a testament to the power of truth and the enduring strength of faith in the face of adversity
