Summary

Dublin Insider "Must Have for the real Dublin Fan"

Let Marc Frommhold take you by the hand and take you on a trip around the capital of Ireland. With enthusiasm and a warm radiant smile, you can explore life in this vibrant city. Dublin, named in Gaelic Baile Átha Cliath, is a centuries old city which is famous foremost for its dark beer, the Jameson Whiskey and Oscar Wilde. It’s a city of millions, full of contrasts; modern buildings next to well-known Georgian houses.

Learn from the knowledge of an insider about the best restaurants and shopping, accommodation facilities, the city's history and extensive nightlife. Go exploring in this great city full of energy and impulses by trying guided tours and excursions in the surrounding green lands. Dublin is a city that is worth the journey whatever the season. You will not be disappointed.

A third of the population is under 30 years old. You can see the change that the city is going through as on many street corners a new café, restaurant or a trendy boutique seems to be opening by these people. Upon entering the Temple Bar Cultural Quarter you will immediately notice the cobblestone streets from an earlier time. You will feel transported back hundreds of years into the past. Part of the road is very narrow and full of history. You can see the Rory Gallagher corner, the famous Irish guitarist and songwriter, or the wall of famous people. Temple Bar is a place that gives the street musicians and party people of Dublin a place to call home. It is worth exploring this city during the day also, not just at night when magical lights come out and you can hear the sound Irish folk songs from every pub.

If you would rather relax in the quiet of nature or want to explore culture, Dublin has a lot to offer. One of the largest urban parks in the world, The Phoenix Park features The Dublin Zoo and the residence of the Irish President and U.S. Ambassador. Wonderful extensive walks can be enjoyed alongside sport enthusiasts. This city offers something for every art and nature lover, historian, Globetrotter or simply enthused socialite. You can literally feel the centuries-old history, contrasting the Modern architecture of our time. Founded by the Vikings in the year 841-AD, you can explore the old Viking district around Dublin Castle.

Dublin insider will help you to write your own history of Dublin. Dublin, your city with an incredible variety of possibility’s. Be part of it.

“Beasts, Men and Gods” is an account of an epic journey, filled with perils and narrow escapes, in the mold of “The Lord of the Rings.”

The difference is: it’s all true.

Ferdinand Ossendowski was a Pole who found himself in Siberia and on the losing side during the Bolshevik Revolution. To escape being rounded up and shot, he set out with a friend to reach the Pacific, there to take ship back to Europe. During his journey he fell in with dozens of other military men who shared the same objective… but nearly every one of them perished on the way.

It’s up to you to decide whether Ossendowski was threatened most by the beasts, by the men, or by the gods, or indeed, by the severe and uncompromising landscapes of Siberia, Mongolia, and China. That he survived at all seems improbable. The mystical mysteries and magics of Buddhism, “The Yellow Faith”, were woven about and through his sojourn and had no little part in his survival. Time after time he was put in the delicate position of being the bargainer between warring groups, and ultimately, only incredible luck and his friendship with the Hutuktu of Narabanchi Monastery saw him through.

When published in the United States, this book caused a sensation and became a best-seller. (Summary by Mark F. Smith)

On the Trail of Don Quixote...

    August F. Jaccaci

On the Trail of Don Quixote is an engaging 1890’s “record of rambles in the Ancient Province of La Mancha” by two artist friends, French author August Jaccaci and Spanish illustrator Daniel Vierge. “Both lovers of the book wherein are recounted the adventures of the good Knight and of his faithful Squire,” as Jaccaci explains, the two men set out to record - Jaccaci in evocative prose, and Vierge in pen and ink drawings - their exploration of the landmarks of Cervantes’ “immortal romance.” Argamasilla, the Cave of Montesinos, Ruidera, the windmills at Crijitano, and the rugged mountain pass of Despeñaperros are among the places Jaccaci and Vierge visited, tramping on foot, or jolting along by mule cart, accompanied in the back country by armed Guardias Civiles. In the 1890’s, before super highways and tourists, Jaccaci could write: “it is incredible how few changes have taken place in the home of the hero since the days of his wanderings. The customs, the character, the manner of dress, and the speech of its inhabitants, have remained practically unchanged . . .” This is a relaxing read for anyone who enjoys good travel books.(Introduction by Sue Anderson)

    Saudade - The Possibilities of...

Beside me, on the stone steps of this quiet courtyard, there is a lame man – the sweeper. He is so thin that the end of his belt comes back around to its buckle. He’s trying to feed a puppy the rest of his lunch. He reminds me that we all need something to need us, and that maybe that’s why we Westerners, who are so independent, mostly fail to understand family in this way, and need to come up with things like ‘quality time’ to justify such a base need. Everyone here asks if my family is in Sri Lanka, if that’s why I’ve come here. When I say no, they’re back in Canada, this confuses them. It’s a black mark against me. Why would I leave them? I am a selfish person. (I am.)

The Portuguese word saudade has no direct English translation. In its simplest sense, it describes a feeling of longing for something that is now gone, and may yet return, but in all likelihood can never be recaptured. In Saudade, traveller Anik See traces her attempts to reclaim this loss in a series of informal essays that take us from the salt plains of Wood Buffalo National Park and the mountains of British Columbia to the fishing ports of Sri Lanka and the rough roads of Tbilisi, Georgia.

Whether at a fishfry in the Northwest Territories, at the post-9/11 Canada-US border, on the ultimate road trip through Australia or at a summer carnival in Santiago de Cuba, See is on a continual quest for simplicity, interrogating the perceived distance between privilege and want. Quietly, insistently, these thoughtful essays ask what we might accomplish if we said no to entitlement; if, instead, we used our privilege to help us better understand human nature. Throughout this psychogeographic diary, crowded with rituals of faith, death and renewal, See asks, again and again, 'How much will be enough?'

    Praise for Saudade:

'Anik See's Saudade is often disturbingly brilliant. It reassures me that much of our experience of the world is still undescribed. Saudade is fresh and utterly original.' – Jim Harrison

'See's meditations on loss, technology, design, and borders are like long-exposure photographs: richly textured, dreamy, observant of even the slightest movement.'
