Sinopse

In "Thus Spake Zarathustra: A Book for All and None," Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche presents a philosophical narrative that combines poetic prose with profound existential inquiry. Structured as a series of discourses delivered by the titular prophet Zarathustra, the text explores themes such as the will to power, the eternal recurrence, and the revaluation of morals, all rendered in a style reminiscent of both ancient scripture and romantic poetry. This novel approach situates the work within the context of 19th-century European thought, engaging with existentialist and nihilistic philosophies while simultaneously challenging the dogmas of conventional morality and religion. Nietzsche, a pivotal figure in Western philosophy, was influenced by his deep engagement with an array of intellectual traditions, from classical philosophy to German romanticism. His personal struggles, including health issues and social isolation, permeate the text and enrich his exploration of individuality and the human experience. Nietzsche's own philosophical evolution is reflected in Zarathustra's journey towards understanding the complexities of existence and the necessity for self-overcoming in a world devoid of inherent meaning. Recommended for anyone interested in philosophy, literature, or the intricate relationship between morality and existence, "Thus Spake Zarathustra" invites readers to confront their own beliefs and values. Nietzsche's masterful blend of allegory, lyrical beauty, and philosophical depth makes this work not just a book, but an enduring challenge to the reader's intellect and soul.

You wont be familiar with every one of the huge array of women featured in this book, but all, familiar or not, leave unanswered questions behind them. The range is extensive, as was the research, with its insight into the lives and minds of women in different centuries, different countries, with diverse cultures and backgrounds, from the poverty stricken to royalty. Mistresses, murderers, smugglers, pirates, prostitutes, and fanatics with hearts and souls that feature every shade of black (and grey!). From Cleopatra to Ruth Ellis, from Boudicca to Bonnie Parker, from Lady Caroline Lamb to Moll Cutpurse, from Jezebel to Ava Gardner. Less familiar names include Mary Jeffries, the Victorian brothel-keeper, Belle Starr, the American gambler and horse thief, La Voisin, the seventeenth-century Queen of all Witches in France but these are random names, to illustrate the variety of the content in store for all those interested in women who defy law and order, for whatever reason. The risque, the adventurous and the outrageous, the downright nasty and the downright desperate all human (female!) life is here. From the lower strata of society to the aristocracy, class is not a common denominator. Wicked? Misunderstood? Nave? Foolish? Predatory? Manipulative? Or just out of their time? Listen and decide.

As Dede Montgomery moves through grief to accept the death of her father, the stories in My Music Man shed light on change, acceptance, and forgiveness amid close personal relationships and Oregon’s natural landscapes. The reader is catapulted into autumn on the Willamette’s riverbank in the 1960s with the author and her brothers, where they discover their father’s own childhood stories and the intimate relationship he shares with the land. Tales about seven generations of family weave between time periods, held together by the constancy of place and colored by memories of picking berries and filberts, traveling through the West Linn locks, and swimming in the river on a hot summer day. Montgomery describes small-town life in a school where everyone knows everybody, and how it felt to be an only girl in what often felt like a never-ending sea of boys. Chapters depict stories about place, seasons, gender, relationships and recovery. This book is to be savored. Yet it's much more than a memoir - it's a multi-generational story, lovingly told, of a family deeply tied to Oregon's history. Although the Inca’s oral traditions suggested that the history of the region began with their empire, the various gods and the religious ceremonies of the peoples that inhabited the Inca’s lands before their arrival were assimilated into the Inca Empire and were incorporated into Inca religion. However, under Inca rule, all those gods were to be subordinate to those gods of the Incas themselves, so as to ensure that imperial authority was clear and without dispute among all quarters of the empire.
Viracocha was the primary god in the Inca pantheon as the origin and creator of all things. His son, the god Inti, or the Sun, was married to Mama Quilla, the Moon, who was also created by Viracocha. According to one myth, Inti was the father of Manco Cápac, the founder of the Inca ruling dynasty, but it was believed by some that Viracocha himself fathered Manco Cápac. In practice, the Inca centered their religious worship on Inti, and this god's High Priest was the second most important person in Inca society. The god Inti was honored at an annual celebration held each June, and the Inti Raymi festival included sacrifices, feasts and sexual abstinence. This cosmology was imposed throughout the empire, and temples to the Sun were constructed and staffed by religious officials who were allotted farmland called “lands of the Sun.” Other local cults were provided with produce from these lands as well.
The main temple of Inca religion was the Coricancha or Sun Temple in Cuzco, in which was kept the great golden disk of the Sun. The disk was appropriated by the Spanish in 1571 and sent off to the Pope. While it has disappeared, perhaps lost somewhere during the tortuous route to Spain, it remains alive in the fabulous world of adventure story writers, New Age mystics and manufacturers of souvenirs. It became a major element in the iconography of the 19th century independence movement in South America.

The Aeneid stands as one of the most influential literary works of the ancient world, a masterpiece that shaped Rome’s cultural and political identity. Written by the poet Virgil between 29 and 19 BCE, this epic tells the story of Aeneas, a Trojan hero destined to lay the foundations for what would become Rome. Blending myth, history, and divine intervention, Virgil crafted a narrative that not only honored Rome’s past but also justified its imperial destiny. Commissioned during the reign of Augustus, The Aeneid served as both a patriotic epic and a moral guide, emphasizing duty, sacrifice, and perseverance.

At its core, The Aeneid explores Rome’s divine origins through the trials and triumphs of Aeneas. His journey mirrors the struggles of Rome itself—facing adversity, enduring loss, and ultimately fulfilling a grand destiny. Unlike Homer’s heroes, Aeneas is driven by pietas, a sense of duty to the gods, his people, and his future nation. This concept of duty over personal desire defines him, setting him apart from figures like Achilles, who is ruled by rage, or Odysseus, who relies on cunning. Through Aeneas, Virgil presents an ideal Roman leader—one who sacrifices personal happiness for the greater good.

The themes of fate and duty play a central role in The Aeneid, reinforcing the idea that Rome’s supremacy was preordained by the gods. From the moment Aeneas flees Troy, his path is guided by prophecy. Though he faces obstacles—such as the wrath of Juno, the temptations of love, and the horrors of war—his unwavering commitment to his destiny ensures that he prevails. Virgil uses this theme to legitimize Augustus’ rule, portraying Rome’s rise as part of a divine plan rather than mere political ambition.
