Sinopsis

In "The Truth About the Congo: The Chicago Tribune Articles," Frederick Starr delivers a compelling and insightful exploration of the tumultuous history and socio-political dynamics of the Congo during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Through a series of meticulously crafted articles originally published in the Chicago Tribune, Starr employs a journalistic style that is both vibrant and evocative, capturing the complex realities of colonialism, exploitation, and cultural clash. His work is set against the backdrop of an era characterized by burgeoning imperial ambitions and rising global awareness of human rights issues, making it a significant contribution to the canon of colonial literature. Frederick Starr, an eminent scholar and observer of African geography and culture, drew upon his extensive travels and keen interest in the Congo to craft these articles. His background in anthropology and a fervent commitment to educating the public on misunderstood global issues inspired him to document the often-overlooked narratives of Congolese society and its struggles. This book stands as a testament to Starr's dedication to social justice and informed discourse. For readers interested in colonial studies, journalism, or African history, "The Truth About the Congo" is a vital resource that illuminates the complexities of its subjects while offering a voice to those frequently marginalized in historical narratives. Starr's incisive commentary and rich storytelling invite readers to engage deeply with the broader implications of colonialism, making this work not only informative but also essential for understanding the legacies that persist into contemporary society.

This is an audiobook of Bodhi Leaves No. 54 by John Andrew Storey, Rebirth narrated by Christa Michel. The print edition can be found in the Pariyatti Edition of Collected Bodhi Leaves Vol. 2. The eBook of Bodhi Leaves No. 54 can be downloaded from the BPS website.

    Excerpt:

There has been a prevailing tendency in science to take a wholly materialistic view of life and the universe. This has perhaps been a natural reaction against the superstitions of past ages which have often masqueraded as religious truth. Happily this extreme reaction is now less apparent than it was, and there now seems to be among scientists a more open-minded approach to life and its phenomena. Parapsychological phenomena, which only a decade ago were not considered to be worthy of serious attention, are now being studied with considerable interest.

    ...

The aim of this essay is to review the evidence and examine the arguments for rebirth in an attempt to make a modest contribution to our understanding of the doctrine. We shall see first that the doctrine is very ancient and very widespread. We shall see that it reflects the natural order which from our observations we know to be cyclical. We shall have a brief look at the evidence from the claimed memories of former lives. We shall try to determine the nature of that which is reborn. And finally we shall examine one of the ways by which the process of rebirth may take place. In this way I hope to make our survey comprehensive so that our evaluation can be truly scientific.

After the United States embassy in Havana was closed in 1961, relations between the countries broke off. A thaw came in 1977 with the opening of a de facto embassy in Havana, the United States Interests Section—where Vicki Huddleston would serve under Presidents Clinton and George W. Bush.

In her memoir of a diplomat at work, she tells gripping stories of face-to-face encounters with Fidel Castro and the initiatives she undertook, like the transistor radios she furnished to ordinary Cubans. Along with inside accounts of dramatic episodes such as the Elián González custody battle, Huddleston also evokes the charm of the island country and her affection for the Cuban people.

Uniquely qualified to explain the inner workings of United States-Cuba relations, Huddleston examines the Obama administration's diplomatic opening of 2014, the mysterious "sonic" brain and hearing injuries suffered by United States and Canadian diplomats serving in Havana, and the rescinding of the diplomatic opening under the Trump administration. She recounts missed opportunities for détente, and the myths, misconceptions, and lies that have long pervaded United States-Cuba relations. Our Woman in Havana is essential for everyone interested in Cuba as well as policymakers and observers who study the stormy relationship with our near neighbor.
