Advance man, press agent, and publicist extraordinaire, John M. Burke (1842–1917) was instrumental in turning William F. Cody into the iconic persona of Buffalo Bill. And with this biography, published in 1893, Burke put the finishing touches on the legend that persists to this day. This new, definitive edition includes the full text and all the photographs and line drawings of Burke’s original, while providing critical background details on the literary sources, historical characters, and events that figure in the work.

With “a few plain truths, unadorned,” Burke purported to give a frank account of Buffalo Bill’s life. Hostile Indians, gunfights, cattle stampedes: Cody’s Wild West was fraught with peril at every turn. This “Chevalier Bayard of American Bordermen” exemplified courage and daring while often narrowly escaping certain death and he earned the respect and admiration of not only his fellow frontiersmen but also European royalty. Burke recounts Cody’s duel with Chief Yellow Hand; his role as army scout, buffalo hunter, Pony Express rider, and international celebrity; and his associations with well-known figures like Kit Carson, Sitting Bull, General Phil Sheridan, and Queen Victoria. A brilliant instance of mythmaking by a true believer, Burke’s portrait of Buffalo Bill Cody as frontiersman and hero is a tribute to the romance of the Wild West and a canonical volume in the American story.

It would be all so easy if we never got that call, heard those words that send you free-falling over the edge, stealing the breath from your lungs, and filling your mouth with a silent scream. But when that call comes, how do you take that next breath? What do you do when your heart stops beating?
Surviving a heart-wrenching journey that seems to have no end, who writes the survival manual for that best seller?
Catherine Ramshaw takes you on her journey, fighting to help two of her children to survive, one through near-death illnesses and an adopted child whose first three years inflicted a wound that will not heal. She shares the conversations she had with God, the scripture, and the difficult lessons she learned as she clung to His hand in the darkness. Her vulnerable and transparent account of the wrestling matches she had with God will inspire you to deepen your own conversations with the Almighty and learn to walk in faith, even in the darkness.
"What I tell you in the dark, speak in the light. What is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the rooftops." Matthew 10:27

A lot has been written about World War II: the triumphs, the tribulations, and the horrors. Tom Clavin’s Lightning Down (2021) includes all three, as he covers the incredible story of Joseph “Joe” Moser, an American pilot who survived his stay at the Buchenwald concentration camp.
Buchenwald is one of the most infamous German concentration camps, not for its sheer size, but the absolutely horrifying conditions its occupants had to endure. Joe was one of 170 Allied airmen who were illegally sent there. Only through sheer acts of will and unity were many of those men spared the camp’s most common fate of death.
Even after he made it out of Buchenwald, Joe’s story was initially not believed, with many thinking he was over-exaggerating the horrors he experienced and witnessed. Of course, that is not the case, and Clavin spares no detail in retelling it.

"I wanted to play drums because I fell in love with the glitter and the lights, but it wasn't about adulation. It was being up there playing."

"I hate leaving home. I love what I do, but I'd love to go home every night."

"It's been years and years and years I've been playing the drums, and they're still a challenge."

    Charlie Watts

Charlie Watts provided the foundation that underpinned the music of the Rolling Stones. The band became a by-word for rock 'n' roll excess but for Watts, playing with the Stones did not become the ego trip that drove Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. A jazz aficionado, Watts vied with Bill Wyman for the title of least charismatic member of the band; he eschewed the limelight and rarely gave interviews. And he famously described life with the Stones as five years of playing, 20 years of hanging around.

Charles Robert Watts was born on 2 June 1941 at the University College Hospital in London and was raised in Kingsbury, now part of the London Borough of Brent. His father was a lorry driver and Watts was brought up in a prefabricated house to which the family had moved after German bombs destroyed hundreds of houses in the area. A childhood friend once described how Watts had an early interest in jazz and recalled listening to 78s in Charlie's bedroom by artists such as Jelly Roll Morton and Charlie Parker.

""There are many women like Belén whose names we don’t know, but whose stories are just as important. An uplifting chronicle of one woman’s fight for justice.""—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)
    Foreword by Margaret Atwood
The heartbreaking true story of an Argentinian woman imprisoned for having a miscarriage—an injustice that galvanized a feminist movement and became a global rallying cry in the fight for reproductive rights.
In 2014, Belén, a twenty-five-year-old woman living in rural Argentina, went to the hospital for a stomachache—and soon found herself in prison. While at the hospital she had a miscarriage—without knowing she was pregnant. Because of the nation’s repressive laws surrounding abortion and reproductive rights, the doctors were forced to report her to the authorities. Despite her protestations, Belén was convicted and sentenced to two years for homicide.
Belén’s imprisonment is a glaring example of how women’s health care has become increasingly criminalized, putting the most vulnerable—BIPOC, rural, and low-income—women at greater risk of prosecution. Belén’s cause became the centerpiece of a movement to achieve greater protections for all women. After two failed attempts to clear her name, Belén met feminist lawyer Soledad Deza, who quickly rallied Amnesty International and ignited an international feminist movement around #niunamas—not one more—symbolized by thousands of demonstrators around the globe donning white masks, the same kind of mask Belén wore when leaving prison. The #niunamas movement was instrumental in pressuring Argentine president Alberto Fernández to decriminalize abortion in 2021.
In this gripping and personal account of the case and its impact on local law, Ana Correa, one of Argentina’s leading journalists and activists, makes clear that what happened to Belén could happen to any woman—and that we all have the power to raise our collective voices and demand change.

    GEORGE WASHINGTON
There is quite a bit of pedigree that comes with being the first in any role or position. Most specifically, you get to set the tone and expectations for those who come after you. As there is no expectation or previous failures for you to repeat, there is less pressure to uphold the reputation of someone who had held the position before you.
Unfortunately, there is also a great deal of pressure that comes with being the first. When you are first there is no one there to come before you, to help guide you in the right direction or advise you when you are perhaps leading astray.
One of the most prestigious firsts is the focus of this book. Inside, you will get a comprehensive look into the life, career, education, accomplishments, failures, death, and legacy of the first president of the United States, George Washington.
