Sinopse

“It's only because of their stupidity that they're able to be so sure of themselves.”
A novel of such ambiguity will inevitably lend itself to a diversity of interpretation, but in The Trial you can at least be sure to find every element of storytelling now defined as Kafkaesque.
Josef K., our protagonist, is unexpectedly arrested on the morning of his thirtieth birthday. The agents who arrest him are unidentified, the agency they work for is unspecified, and the crime for which he has been accused is unknown. When he is released, shortly after, he is told to await further instruction. So begins the manic and emotionless trial of a man beholden to the whims of an unknown force, and his painstaking attempts to find a way out of this existential maze.
The Trial brings into focus the absurdity of life, our universal fear of judgement, and one ultimate question: how much of this endless maze will you explore before you accept the fate life has bestowed upon you?

Montague Rhodes James (1862-1936), who wrote as M. R. James, was an English author, mediaeval scholar, and provost of King's College, Cambridge, and of Eton College. He is best known for his outstanding ghost stories. James reinvented the ghost story for the modern audience by moving away from Gothic elements and using realistic contemporary settings. His protagonists and plots often reflected his own antiquarian interests. Accordingly he is known as the originator of the "antiquarian ghost story"."The Diary of Mr. Poynter" tells the story of a book collector who buys a set of ancient diaries. In one of these is pinned a rather unusual sample of fabric, which, at the insistence of his aunt, he has copied to make curtains for their new house. Once the curtains are hanging, strange phenomena begin to take place in the house....

"An Honest Thief" by Fyodor Dostoevsky is a captivating story that follows the life of the narrator, who reluctantly agrees to let a mysterious lodger into his small apartment. The lodger, named Emelyan Ilyitch, is a poor and pitiful man with a drinking problem. Despite his initial reservations, the narrator develops a soft spot for Emelyan and decides to provide him with food and shelter. However, he also feels the responsibility to guide Emelyan towards a better life. As the story unfolds, the narrator becomes emotionally invested in Emelyan's well-being. He contemplates the idea of finding him a job and helping him overcome his addiction. The narrator's compassion is tested when he must confront the reality that Emelyan may be taking advantage of his kindness. The story takes a surprising turn when the narrator discovers that Emelyan has stolen his wadded greatcoat. "An Honest Thief" is a thought-provoking tale that delves into the intricacies of human behavior and challenges conventional notions of honesty and integrity. Dostoevsky's masterful storytelling captures the reader's attention, leaving them pondering the complexities of human nature long after the story concludes. Read in English, unabridged.

Written in Greek, without any intention of publication, by the only Roman emperor who was also a philosopher, the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius (AD 121-180) offer a remarkable series of challenging spiritual reflections and exercises developed as the emperor struggled to understand himself and make sense of the universe. Ranging from doubt and despair to conviction and exaltation, they cover such diverse topics as the nature of moral virtue, human rationality, divine providence, and Marcus' own emotions. But while the Meditations were composed to provide personal consolation and encouragement, in developing his beliefs Marcus Aurelius also created one of the greatest of all works of philosophy: a timeless collection of extended meditations and short aphorisms that has been consulted and admired by statesmen, thinkers and readers through the centuries.

If you happen to find a map in a dead buccaneer’s sea trunk, you can’t very well ignore it, not if you are Jim Hawkins and his friends Dr. Livesey, Captain Smollett and Squire Trelawney! But even with a map, buried treasures are not easy things to come by. At the start of his grand adventure, setting sail on the good ship Hispaniola, the young Hawkins is a hesitant, querulous boy, too easily beguiled by his own fancy. By journey’s end he will have faced murder, mutiny, and mayhem—and in the process, become a man.Narrator Neil Hunt brings to life the characters Robert Louis Stevenson made so memorable: Black Dog, Blind Pew, Billy Bones, George Merry, Israel Hands, and Ben Gunn.
