"Fruitfulness" delves into the contrasting themes of desire and duty, the pursuit of social status versus personal fulfillment, and the role of women in a society that seeks to confine them to traditional roles. Zola's masterful storytelling illuminates the complex layers of human nature, exposing the inherent contradictions and desires that drive individuals to make choices that shape their lives and those around them. With richly drawn characters and vivid descriptions of the French countryside, "Fruitfulness" is a thought-provoking and emotionally charged novel that explores the timeless themes of love, ambition, and the struggle for self-discovery in a society defined by its rigid social hierarchy. It is a compelling tale that reminds us of the complexities of human relationships and the consequences of our choices in the pursuit of happiness and fulfillment.

““What is a ‘Bummel’?” said George. “How would you translate it?”
“A ‘Bummel’,” I explained, “I should describe as a journey, long or short, without an end; the only thing regulating it being the necessity of getting back within a given time to the point from which one started.””
Written in 1900, Jerome. K. Jerome’s sequel to his successful “Three Men in a Boat” (1889) retains his same three men; Harris, George, and himself. They are now older, if not always wiser, and decide to embark on a bicycle tour of the Black Forest and its surrounding areas.
Perhaps it is something of the late Victorian Gentleman’s attitude to “foreign parts” that give this sequel a somewhat less frivolous tone than the generally jolly one of three men boating on the familiar Thames. Indeed, the description of the popular practise of German Student duelling (“The Mensur”) is decidedly graphic. Yet despite a less cohesive narrative there are still many equally funny incidents, told with Jerome’s characteristic self-deprecating style. Not least, dear Uncle Podger makes a welcome return as he tries his futile best to leave the house on time for work.
Head Stories Audio presents "Three Men on the Bummel" by Jerome. K. Jerome. Narrated by Simon Hester. With original music.

Written in 1786, this Oriental fantasy tells the story of a dissolute and debauched Caliph, Vathek. Having become obsessed with power and immortality, Vathek embarks on a journey to obtain supernatural powers, in pursuit of which he proves willing to renounce his religion and sacrifice both his children and his soul. We follow Vathek’s remarkable travels to the subterranean palace of Eblis, where his ultimate fate awaits him. Among the themes explored in Vathek are ambition, desire and the consequence of unbridled power. The novel influenced several later writers, including Poe and Lovecraft, and is given an exhilarating reading here by Jonathan Keeble.

Their mutual passion attracts and repels the couple in equal measure but the young man pulls away in a literal fire of passion. He escapes from the witch of his desires to the respectability he craves but we wonder if he can be truly happy without the sensual side of his life being satisfied.
