Sinopse

Elder Conklin, penned by Frank Harris, is a compelling novella that intricately explores the complexities of human relationships and the moral ambiguity of fidelity. Set against the backdrop of early 20th-century America, Harris employs a vivid and conversational prose style that reflects the social realities of the time, illuminating the interplay between societal expectations and personal desires. Through the character of Elder Conklin, a scheming yet charismatic figure, readers encounter themes of manipulation, faith, and the darker recesses of the human psyche, inviting critical reflection on the nature of truth and self-deception. Frank Harris, an Irish-American journalist and writer, was known for his controversial views on morality and mastery of wit. His experiences as a candid observer of life—ranging from his time spent in the literary salons of London to his tumultuous journalism career—have significantly influenced his writing. This rich tapestry of influences is evident in Elder Conklin, where Harris delves into the psyche of his protagonist, drawing on both personal and societal dilemmas faced during his era, thereby crafting a narrative that resonates with existential inquiry. Readers who appreciate nuanced character studies and morally intricate plots will find Elder Conklin to be a rewarding addition to their literary repertoire. Harris's eloquent narrative not only entertains but also prompts profound reflection on the nature of belief and betrayal, making it a critical read for those interested in the intersections of ethics and human behavior.

Helen is a young Yazidi woman, living with her family in a mountain village in Sinjar, northern Iraq. One day she finds a local bird caught in a trap and frees it, just as the trapper, Elias, returns. At first angry, he soon sees the error of his ways and vows never to keep a bird captive again. Helen and Elias fall deeply in love, marry and start a family in Sinjar. The village has seemed to stand apart from time, protected by the mountains and too small to attract much political notice. But their happy existence is suddenly shattered when Elias, a journalist, goes missing. A brutal organization is sweeping over the land, infiltrating even the remotest corners, its members cloaking their violence in religious devotion. Helen’s search for her husband results in her own captivity and enslavement. She eventually escapes her captors and is reunited with some of her family, but her life is forever changed. Elias remains missing and her sons, now young recruits to the organization, are like strangers. Will she find harmony and happiness again? For fans of Elif Shafak, Samar Yazbek's Planet of Clay, and Ahmed Saadawi's Frankenstein in Baghdad, Dunya Mikhail's The Bird Tattoo chronicles a story full of great upheaval, love and loss, and beauty and horror that was shortlisted for the International Prize for Arabic Fiction.

Richard Bernard Heldmann was born on 12th October 1857, in St Johns Wood, North London.

By his early 20’s Heldmann began publishing fiction for the myriad magazine publications that had sprung up and were eager for good well-written content.

In October 1882, Heldmann was promoted to co-editor of Union Jack, a popular magazine, but his association with the publication ended suddenly in June 1883. It appears Heldman was prone to issuing forged cheques to finance his lifestyle. In April 1884 he was sentenced to 18 months hard labour.

In order to be well away from the scandal and the damage that this had caused to his reputation Heldmann adopted a pseudonym on his release from jail. Shortly thereafter the name ‘Richard Marsh’ began to appear in the literary periodicals. The use of his mother’s maiden name as part of it seems both a release and a lifeline.

A stroke of very good fortune arrived with his novel ‘The Beetle’ published in 1897. This would turn out to be his greatest commercial success and added some much-needed gravitas to his literary reputation.

Marsh was a prolific writer and wrote almost 80 volumes of fiction as well as many short stories, across many genres from horror and crime to romance and humour. His unusual characters, plotting devices and other literary developments have identified his legacy as one of the best British writers of his time.

Richard Marsh died from heart disease in Haywards Heath in Sussex on 9th August 1915. He was 57.

This audiobook is narrated by an AI Voice.
Born in the crushing poverty of Valparaíso, Isabella "La Víbora" Velasco clawed her way to the bloody pinnacle of the international cocaine trade. From the violent streets of Nueva Esperanza to the sun-drenched, bullet-riddled avenues of Costa del Sol, she built an empire on innovation, ruthlessness, and a mountain of corpses. They called her La Madrina, the Godmother, a woman who commanded loyalty through fear and eliminated rivals with chilling precision, pioneering terrifying tactics like the motorcycle assassin and the infamous "Sol Marina Mall Mayhem."
But as her power grew, so did her paranoia, her cruelty touching even her own family, turning her sons into reluctant heirs of a cursed dynasty. Hunted by Colombian cartels, pursued by relentless US federal agents like Frank Miller, and betrayed from within, Isabella's reign of terror could not last forever. "Queen of the Sun Coast" is a shocking, fictionalized saga of ambition, power, and the devastating price of a life steeped in violence, inspired by one of history's most notorious female crime lords.
