Sinopse

Gargantua and Pantagruel by Francois Rabelais The Life of Gargantua and of Pantagruel (French: La vie de Gargantua et de Pantagruel) is a pentalogy of novels written in the 16th century by François Rabelais,[a] telling the adventures of two giants, Gargantua (/ɡɑːrˈɡæntjuə/ gar-GAN-tew-ə, French: [ɡaʁɡɑ̃tɥa]) and his son Pantagruel (/pænˈtæɡruɛl, -əl, ˌpæntəˈɡruːəl/ pan-TAG-roo-el, -əl, PAN-tə-GROO-əl, French: [pɑ̃taɡʁyɛl]). The work is written in an amusing, extravagant, and satirical vein, features much erudition, vulgarity, and wordplay, and is regularly compared with the works of William Shakespeare and James Joyce.

Rabelais was a polyglot, and the work introduced "a great number of new and difficult words [...] into the French language".
The work was stigmatised as obscene by the censors of the Collège de la Sorbonne, and, within a social climate of increasing religious oppression in a lead up to the French Wars of Religion, it was treated with suspicion, and contemporaries avoided mentioning it.

"Pantagruelism", a form of stoicism, developed and applied throughout, is (among other things) "a certain gaiety of spirit confected in disdain for fortuitous things" (French: une certaine gaîté d'esprit confite dans le mépris des choses fortuites).

“Morley Swingle’s Scoundrels to the Hoosegow is not only consistently fascinating, but there is much to be learned from it about life in and out of an American courtroom. I highly recommend this engrossing book.” Vincent Bugliosi, Author of Helter Skelter
In Scoundrels to the Hoosegow, a veteran prosecutor who is also a terrific storyteller shares more than thirty legal stories drawn from real life. In cases ranging from tragic to hilarious, Morley Swingle offers a behind-the-scenes look at the justice system from crime scenes to courtrooms.
Swingle takes readers on an enjoyable romp through crime and punishment. Whether describing a drunk who frees dogs from the pound or a serial killer who saves lives in his day job, he combines true crime and legal analysis with a healthy dose of humor—and shares the occasional “Perry Mason moment."
“If Tom Wolfe’s Bonfire of the Vanities captured the essence of criminal practice in a major metropolis, then Scoundrels surely captures the essence of that practice in small town and rural America.” Robert H. Dierker, Jr.
“Swingle has written an interesting, easily approachable—and rare—account of daily life as a prosecuting attorney. I am unaware of any prosecutor who writes better than Swingle. The book is refreshing. Mark Twain almost certainly would have enjoyed it.” Steve Weinberg, St. Louis Post-Dispatch
“Morley Swingle is a terrific writer and an even better entertainer. Lawyers and non-lawyers alike will enjoy being along for this informative and entertaining trip to the hoosegow.” Forward, Reviews of Indie Books
“Those who read Ann Rule, Joe McGinniss or John Grisham will enjoy this book.” Lithuanian Librarian

"Things used to be easier, but even in those carefree days, the rules were in place for a reason. And that reason is: so we can all agree. So we can all have the same standard applied across the board. So there is no special treatment, which no one should receive. This is why we need the rules."

The stories in Avalanche combine humor with an earnest examination and indictment of white entitlement, guilt, shame, and disorientation in the wake of waking up to the reality of racism. Focusing on the perspective of white, cis, straight, and mostly middle-aged and middle-class characters, this collection shines a light on the obliviousness of white privilege, the violence of polite, quiet racism hiding just under the surface of mundane, everyday situations, and the anguished flailing of "well-intentioned white ladies" desperate to confirm their essential goodness at all costs. Westhead writes with compassion and empathy for both her frustrating and frustrated white protagonists and the racialized characters who encounter them, and uses humor not to comfortably distance white readers from the harmful behavior of her self-absorbed protagonists, but to pull them in close to recognize—and reckon with—those familiar parts of themselves, and to become more aware of the insidious systems of white supremacy at work behind the scenes.

Drew and Betty Stevens have such a great life. He's a river cruise boat captain who spends his weeks on the Seine River surrounded by gorgeous French countryside. She’s a tour guide working on the same boat!

Ah, life is good. And it's about to get better. One morning, Drew and Betty are approached by a human resources director for the cruise line, who informs them that Betty is being promoted to cruise director!

There's just one slight problem: Before this promotion can move forward, the HR director, Jerome Ferguson, needs to be convinced that Betty will be ready, willing, and able to take any and all orders from her husband, who will now be her boss.

Betty assures Ferguson that she is up for the task. But he wants proof. He wants a "demonstration." And this demonstration will consist of Drew issuing her a string of commands that are sufficiently "difficult" for Betty to carry out.

And to Jerome Ferguson, "difficult" means really dirty!

Well, now, Drew can't resist! You see, as much as he adores his beautiful and wonderful wife, he’s been frustrated for years by Betty's lack of "open-mindedness" in the bedroom. Betty is conservative to the max. And this has been hard on poor Drew, who would like nothing more than to add some zesty spice to their sex-life.

Well, Drew gets a little carried away with his newfound power. And his demands go beyond "dirty!"

But that's not all. Not only is this demonstration arousing him to no end. Even better, it is giving him a sweet taste of what it's like to have a wife who is totally submissive to him--totally under his control--totally dominated by him--and humiliated out of her mind!

Bottom line: Betty is now entirely under Drew’s control--at work and after hours--and now that Drew has assumed that new role, he's never going back!
