Sinopsis

The Jazz Age: lights, parties, beautiful cars and cocktail dresses, but behind the tenderness of the night lies its darkness, its harshness, the sense of loneliness. Young Nick Carraway moves to New York City in the summer of 1922. He rents a house in prestigious, dreamy Long Island, teeming with the newly rich desperately busy partying with each other. One neighbor strikes Nick in a particular way: he is the mysterious Jay Gatsby, who lives in an outsized, gaudy house, filling it every Saturday night with guests at his extravagant parties. Yet he lives in desperate loneliness and falls senselessly in love with Nick's married cousin Daisy. The American myth decays page after page, retaining all the glitter of its facade but also showing its fragility. Just as was happening to Fitzgerald himself, a former playboy grappling with the mystery of an existence now doomed to final dissolution.

James Baldwin (1924–1987) was a pivotal figure of the twentieth century, an influential author, intellectual, and activist who led a celebrated public life—and whose words and image and persona remain current in our culture. Baldwin's many incarnations have reemerged in the digital age as Baldwin's work becomes a touchstone for a new generation. It is the private, vulnerable, and messier Baldwin—the man behind the prophet and the online meme—who is the focus of this book.

Magdalena J. Zaborowska draws on Baldwin's archives and material legacy—from his unpublished papers to his books to his house in France—to offer a fresh look at the writer's understated and obscured private life. Taking a cue from Baldwin's own love of the blues, Zaborowska presents his biography as a series of tracks on a vinyl record, introducing, developing, and remixing the themes and relationships from his life. She recounts episodes from Baldwin's troubled childhood, his struggles with sexuality and gender, his intimate relationships, and the overlooked influence of women, Jews, and queers on his writing. This Life Album revolves around Baldwin's development of a unique worldview, "Black queer humanism," premised on African diaspora aesthetics, resilience, joy, community, internationalism, activism, and justice.

Tired of always finishing last while others rise effortlessly? Wondering why some people always get what they want, even when they shouldn’t?
The answer is simple: they know the real rules of the game.
“The Practical Psychopath” unveils the strategies no one dares to teach. You won’t find sermons about kindness or empty motivational theories here. This book exposes how power really works: raw, direct, unapologetic.
    You’ll learn how to:
Smile while planning your next move
Turn every interaction into a strategic advantage
Get others to work toward your goals without realizing it
Control narratives before they control you
Rise without anyone seeing how you got to the top
This is not a book for everyone. It’s for those tired of losing while preaching morality from a place of defeat. For those who understand that in a ruthless world, naivety is a luxury they can’t afford.
Warning: If you prefer to hold on to your illusions about human nature, close this book now. If you want to understand how power truly moves, keep reading.
The good finish last. The strategists finish on top.

‘Grimly fascinating … engrossing’ Daily Mail
NINE HISTORIC CRIMES. ONE FAMILIAR OBSESSION.
In early modern England, murder truly was most foul. Trials were gossipy events packed to the rafters with noisome spectators. Executions were public proceedings which promised not only gore, but desperate confessions and the grandest, most righteous human drama. Bookshops saw grisly stories of crime and death sell like hot cakes.
This history unfolds the true stories of murder, criminal investigation, early forensic techniques, high court trials and so much more.
In thrilling narrative, we follow a fugitive killer through the streets of London, citizen detectives clamouring to help officials close the net. We untangle the mystery of a suspected staged suicide through the newly emerging science of forensic pathology. We see a mother trying to clear her dead daughter’s name while other women faced the accusations – sometimes true and sometimes not – of murdering their own children.
These stories are pieced together from original research using coroner’s inquests, court records, parish archives, letters, diaries and the cheap street pamphlets that proliferated to satisfy a voracious public.
These intensely personal stories portray the lives of real people as they confronted the extraordinary crises of murder, infanticide, miscarriage and suicide. Many historical laws and attitudes concerning death and murder may strike us as exceptionally cruel, and yet many still remind us that some things never change: we are still fascinated by narratives of murder and true crime, murder trials today continue to be grand public spectacles, female killers are frequently cast as aberrant objects of public hatred and sexual desire, and suicide remains a sin within many religious organisations and was a crime in England until the 1960s.
Great and Horrible News! explores the strange history of death and murder in early modern England, yet the stories within may appear shockingly familiar.
Great and Horrible News by Blessin Adams is a riveting biography of the most notorious criminals of the Stuart and Elizabethan eras. This latest bestseller offers a new perspective on the period from 1485-1603, making it a top choice for those interested in European history.
For fans of Michelle Morgan (The Book of Hope), Kate Summerscale (The Peepshow), Tom Holland (The Rest is History), David Wilson (A History Of British Serial Killing), and Christopher Clark (Kaiser Wilhelm II).
