Sinopse

In "Aristocracy in America. From the Sketch-Book of a German Nobleman, Vol. 2," Francis J. Grund offers a compelling exploration of American society through the eyes of a European aristocrat. This volume continues the rich narrative established in the first, blending astute social commentary with vibrant descriptive prose. Grund juxtaposes the remnants of European class structures with the burgeoning American ideals of democracy and egalitarianism, employing a reflective and at times ironic tone that sheds light on the complexities of American identity in the mid-19th century. His observations are steeped in a historical context that uncovers the tensions between aristocratic traditions and the American experience of social mobility. Francis J. Grund, a German nobleman himself, was uniquely positioned to navigate these themes. His background provided him with a perspective that was both critical and appreciative of American society. Grund emigrated to the United States, observing the vast differences in social and political landscapes that shaped the nation. His firsthand experience and intimate understanding of European aristocracy compelled him to articulate both admiration and critique within this work. "Aristocracy in America" is essential for any reader intrigued by the intersections of class, society, and culture. It not only enriches our understanding of 19th-century America but also serves as a poignant reflection on the evolving nature of democracy. This book is a must-read for scholars, historians, and general readers alike seeking to comprehend the enduring legacy of social stratification in America.

"The golden tractate" (Aureus) by Hermes Trismegistus is a classic text of Hermetic and ancient Philosophy about natural and divine magic; it will strongly influence the later Alchemic literature.
The Golden Tractate of Hermes, first created in the Renaissance and rendered into English in 1850, is one of a number of texts from its era attempting to explain alchemy, along with the works of Pontanus and Artephius. Through a veil of symbolism it attempts to inform the reader of the process of creating Ixir, and thus the universal medicine of alchemy.
Hermes Trismegistus is a legendary Hellenistic period figure that originated as a syncretic combination of the Greek god Hermes and the Egyptian god Thoth.

As Lee’s army moved into Pennsylvania, Stuart’s cavalry screened his movements, thereby engaging in the more traditional cavalry roles, but it’s widely believed that he was still smarting over the results of June 9. As a result, many historians think it likely that he had already planned to remove the negative effect of Brandy Station by duplicating one of his now famous rides around the enemy army, much as he did to McClellan’s Army of the Potomac during the Peninsula Campaign in 1862. This time, however, as Lee began his march north through the Shenandoah Valley in western Virginia, it is highly unlikely that is what he wanted or expected.
To complicate matters even more, as Stuart set out on June 25 on what was probably a glory-seeking mission, he was unaware that his intended path was blocked by columns of Union infantry that would invariably force him to veer farther east than he or Lee had anticipated. Ultimately, his decision would prevent him from linking up with Ewell as ordered and deprive Lee of his primary cavalry force as he advanced deeper and deeper into unfamiliar enemy territory. According to Halsey Wigfall (son of Confederate States Senator Louis Wigfall) who was in Stuart’s infantry, “Stuart and his cavalry left [Lee’s] army on June 24 and did not contact [his] army again until the afternoon of July 2, the second day of the [Gettysburg] battle.”
As it would turn out, Lee’s army inadvertently stumbled into Union cavalry and then the Union army at Gettysburg on the morning of July 1, 1863, unaware of the force in their front. From July 1-3, Lee’s army tried everything in its power to decisively defeat George Meade’s Union Army of the Potomac, unleashing ferocious assaults that inflicted nearly 50,000 casualties in all. Lee would try and fail to dislodge the Union army with attacks on both of its flanks during the second day and Pickett’s Charge on the third and final day.

Crisis Convoy - The Story of...

    Sir Peter Gretton

In April 1943, Commander Peter Gretton was in charge of escorting a vital Allied trade convoy from New York to Great Britain across the North Atlantic. Over the course of the voyage, the sixty-one merchant ships of convoy HX231, along with the six ships of B7 Escort Group, were continuously shadowed and attacked by a German wolf pack of twenty U-boats.

With the aid of air support, the convoy and defending escort fought valiantly across hundreds of miles of ocean and, despite poor weather conditions, managed to sink and severely damage several enemy submarines. Tragically six merchant ships were torpedoed and with no rescue vessel any survivors were left stranded in the freezing waters of the Atlantic as the convoy continued on its journey.

Drawing on reports from both sides, Gretton details the sequence of events as convoy HX231 battled its way through a large wolf pack and offers an authoritative post-battle analysis of the strategies, decisions, and actions taken that would ultimately see the tide of war turn in favor of victory for the Allies.

Crisis Convoy takes the listener to the heart of the action and is a thrilling account of naval warfare during World War II.
