The story of South Carolina’s first female Chief Justice, with contributions by Sandra Day O’Connor, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, legal scholars, family members, and more. As a lawyer, legislator, and judge, Jean Hoefer Toal is one of the most accomplished women in South Carolina history. In this volume, contributors—including two United States Supreme Court Justices, federal and state judges, state leaders, historians, legal scholars, leading attorneys, family, and friends—provide analysis, perspective, and biographical information about the life and career of this dynamic leader and her role in shaping South Carolina. Growing up during the 1950s and ‘60s, Jean Hoefer was a youthful witness to the civil rights movement in the state and nation. Observing the state’s premier civil rights lawyer, Matthew J. Perry Jr., in court encouraged her to attend law school, where she met her husband, Bill Toal. When she was admitted to the South Carolina Bar in 1968, fewer than one hundred women had been admitted in the state’s history. From then on she was both a leader and a role model. She excelled in trial and appellate work and won major victories on behalf of Native Americans and women. In 1975, she was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives, and despite her age and gender quickly became one of the most respected members of that body. During her years in the House, Toal promoted major legislation on issues including constitutional law, criminal law, utilities regulation, local government, state appropriations, workers compensation, and freedom of information. In 1988, she was sworn in as the first female justice on the Supreme Court of South Carolina, and twelve years later she was elected Chief Justice, becoming the first woman ever to hold the highest position in the state’s judiciary. As Chief Justice, Toal modernized not only her court, but also the state’s judicial system. As a child, she loved roller skating in the lobby of the post office—a historic building that now serves as the Supreme Court of South Carolina. From a child in Columbia to Madam Chief Justice, her story comes full circle in this compelling account of her life and influence. Contributors include: Joseph F. Anderson, Jr. * Joan P. As the composer of some of Ireland's best-loved songs, not to mention a host of global hits, Phil Coulter has been a mainstay of Irish cultural life for decades. But this is a position that has been hard won, often in the face of extraordinary personal and political upheaval, most of which has, to date, been kept hidden from public view.
Heartfelt and wry, meditative and entertaining, Bruised, Never Broken is the story of the author's remarkable rise from modest beginnings on the streets of post-war Derry to the summit of the global charts, as a composer and confidante to a host of the era's biggest stars, such as Van Morrison, Luke Kelly, Cliff Richard and Sandie Shaw.
Poignantly, it is also a hymn to the place that made him, a city as complex and troubled throughout Ireland's middle decades as any on Earth, yet a source of constant inspiration and consolation.

    From pig-farm to the Ballroom.
The dog-eat-dog 70’s Ballroom scene was lubricated with huge amounts of alcohol and sex; and budding ballroom professional George Lloyd was there for every second of it. Plucked from a life of mucking out hogs, George is snapped up by a London dance school where he becomes a rising star of Ballroom.
Unfortunately, the late 70’s signals the death knell for Ballroom dancing across the country and many dance schools are struggling. However, the guy who steps up to the plate to save the day is none other than George Lloyd, who helps many dance schools by introducing Disco Dancing to his classes.
Through a haze of drink and a coterie of adoring women, George becomes an instant doyen of the British dance scene and is nominated for one of the biggest awards in the industry. But, for every new star on the block, there is always a queue of nasty adversaries, with daggers sharpened, waiting in the shadows.
Tragically, Ballroom has to take a back seat when George’s young daughter is diagnosed with cancer. After a charity get-together with Lady Diana Spencer and John Travolta the story becomes a news sensation in the UK and the US, but Diana is tragically killed on the eve she is about to meet George and his family.
George Lloyd’s moving memoir captures a period of a time steeped in aspic, love, death, tragedy, success, decadence, violence and gentleness. Beneath the glow of the light fantastic, all human life is here in this book … Kevin Allen
“I owe so much to George Lloyd, he’s one of my dancing heroes and this book will give you an insight into his wonderful and colourful life”… Len Goodman
“George will spin you across the dance floor of his extraordinary life leaving you drunk, dizzy and ravenous for more” … Rhys Ifans
“A great read and right up my street” … Catherine Tyldesley
