Sinopse

70 years ago, children enjoyed a lot more freedom than they do today. The time allowed to play often stretched for days at a time. In many cases, this allowed children to become highly creative while finding exciting opportunities to play unsupervised.

No one seemed concerned about a child climbing the highest tree or going on a picnic or fishing, unaccompanied by adults. Even an overnight camping trip for a group of under 12s was usually acceptable as long as it wasn't raining.

In turn, the ability to make important decisions and take risks, given the freedom experienced, built resilience in children that we don't see anymore.

Today's children are often fearful and turn to their parents, who supervise everything they do. Helicopter parents hover over their children's every move to ensure that they come to no harm. In doing so, the parent inadvertently causes more harm, making the child/children dependent on the parent for even the simplest decision.

A bestseller “alive with the bustle of ancient times” that “movingly reconstructs St. Luke’s search for God” (The New York Times). Two millennia ago, a Greek man known as Lucanus traveled to Alexandria to study medicine. He would become one of the greatest doctors of his time and heal the sick all throughout the Mediterranean world. But his extraordinary work as a physician is not his greatest legacy. Today he is known around the world as St. Luke—author of the third Gospel of the New Testament. He never laid eyes on Jesus, but he heard about Christ’s life and death, and saw God in Him. He retraced Jesus’s steps and sought out those who had known Him—including His mother, Mary. The resulting account is a cornerstone of Christianity and world history. From the celebrated author of Captains and the Kings and Great Lion of God comes this stirring and deeply inspiring story, counted “among the bestselling religious novels of all time” (The New York Times Book Review). “A portrait so moving and so eloquent I doubt it is paralleled elsewhere in literature.” —Boston Herald “Magnificent. . . . [Caldwell] has made St. Luke a real and believable man and recreated on a vast canvas the times and people of his day. You see as large as life all the glory and decadence of Rome and all the strife, turmoil and mysticism of Africa. . . . A glowing and passionate statement of belief.” —The Columbus Citizen

Edgar Allan Poe was one of the most influential writers in American literary history, a master of mystery, horror, and psychological fiction whose works continue to captivate readers nearly two centuries after they were written. Poet, critic, editor, and storyteller, Poe helped shape entire literary genres and left a lasting mark on world literature through his imagination, innovation, and exploration of the darker corners of human experience.

Born in Boston in 1809, Poe endured a life marked by loss, financial hardship, and personal struggle. Orphaned at a young age, he pursued a literary career during a period when writing rarely provided financial security. Despite these challenges, he produced an extraordinary body of work, including The Raven, The Tell-Tale Heart, The Fall of the House of Usher, and The Murders in the Rue Morgue, the latter often regarded as the first modern detective story. Poe's influence extended far beyond horror and poetry. His innovations helped inspire the development of detective fiction, science fiction, psychological suspense, and modern literary criticism.

This biography traces Poe's journey from troubled beginnings to literary immortality. Drawing upon letters, memoirs, historical records, and contemporary accounts, it explores his life, works, struggles, mysteries, and enduring legacy. Few authors have exercised a greater influence on popular and literary culture than Edgar Allan Poe, whose haunting imagination continues to fascinate readers around the world.
