Sinopse

Frances Hodgson Burnett's "The Secret Garden" and "A Little Princess" are timeless tales that interweave themes of resilience, growth, and the transformative power of imagination. Written in a vividly descriptive style, both stories reflect the late Victorian fascination with nature and social class. In "The Secret Garden," we witness the metamorphosis of Mary Lennox, an imperious and lonely girl who discovers a hidden garden that becomes a sanctuary for her healing and friendship. Similarly, in "A Little Princess," Sara Crewe's indomitable spirit shines through adversity, showcasing Burnett's skill in portraying the nuanced psychology of childhood. These narratives not only capture the innocence and challenges of youth but also serve as poignant critiques of class disparities of their time. Born to a modest family in England, Frances Hodgson Burnett immigrated to the United States, which profoundly influenced her perspectives on identity and belonging. Her rich childhood experiences fueled her imagination, as did her own struggles with loss and resilience, themes that resonate deeply in her works. The impact of her life's trajectory can be seen in the well-rounded, complex characters she creates, who often reflect her personal beliefs in the triumph of hope and kindness. Readers will find these stories not only enchanting but also enlightening, making this eBook an essential addition to any literary collection. Burnett's classic narratives challenge readers to embrace the beauty of nature and the power of friendship, encouraging us to discover the secret gardens within our own lives. This collection invites readers of all ages to take an insightful journey into the heart of childhood's wonders.

Norman read the first sentence of the letter again: The whole country round seems to be really greedy to hear the Word of God, many are deciding for Christ. As he read, he heard a clear voice inside his head say, That s where you are to go. A shiver ran down Norman s spine. He was positive God had just directed him to join C.T. Studd and his mission in the heart of Africa. That was where his life s work lay. As a boy at boarding school in Great Britain, Norman would never have guessed where his life s work would take him. After serving in World War I, he studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he played a key role in the beginnings of InterVarsity Fellowship. Following in the footsteps of C.T. Studd, Norman then answered God s call to join the Heart of Africa Mission in the Belgian Congo. A passionate yet humble evangelist, missionary, and teacher, Norman went on to lead the Worldwide Evangelistic Crusade (WEC) and helped found the Christian Literature Crusade. While the Lincoln Administration and most Northerners were preoccupied with trying to capture Richmond in the summer of 1861, it would be the little-known Ulysses S. Grant who delivered the Union’s first major victories, over a thousand miles away from Washington. Grant’s new commission led to his command of the District of Southeast Missouri, headquartered at Cairo, after he was appointed by “The Pathfinder”, John C. Fremont, a national celebrity who had run for President in 1856. Fremont was one of many political generals that Lincoln was saddled with, and his political prominence ensured he was given a prominent command as commander of the Department of the West early in the war before running so afoul of the Lincoln Administration that he was court-martialed.
In January of 1862, Grant persuaded General Henry “Old Brains” Halleck to allow his men to launch a campaign on the Tennessee River. As soon as Halleck acquiesced, Grant moved against Fort Henry, in close coordination with the naval command of Flag Officer Andrew Hull Foote. The combination of infantry and naval bombardment helped force the capitulation of Fort Henry on February 6, 1862, and the surrender of Fort Henry was followed immediately by an attack on Fort Donelson on the Cumberland River, which earned Grant his famous nickname “Unconditional Surrender”. Grant’s forces enveloped the Confederate garrison at Fort Donelson, which included Confederate generals Simon Buckner, John Floyd, and Gideon Pillow. In one of the most bungled operations of the war, the Confederate generals tried and failed to open an escape route by attacking Grant’s forces on February 15. Although the initial assault was successful, General Pillow inexplicably chose to have his men pull back into their trenches, ostensibly so they could take more supplies before their escape. Instead, they simply lost all the ground they had taken, and the garrison was cut off yet again.

Twelve-year-old Dory Byrne lives with her brothers on New York City's Lower East Side, waiting impatiently through the darkest hours of World War II for her pop to come home from fighting Hitler. Legally speaking, Dory's brother, Fish, isn't old enough to be in charge of Dory and her younger brother, Pike, but the neighborhood knows the score and, like Pop always says, "the neighborhood will give you what you need."

There's the lady from the bakery, who saves them leftover crullers. The kind landlord who checks in on them. And every Thursday night, the Byrnes enjoy a free bowl of seafood stew at Mr. Caputo's restaurant. Which is where Dory learns about the hand-pulled elevator that is the only way to get to Caputo's upper floors. The elevator that's so creaky and ancient, nobody's been in it for decades.

    Until now.

The Byrnes' landlord dies unexpectedly and the new one is anything but kind. When he catches on about Pop being gone, he turns the Byrnes in, hoping they'll be shipped off to an orphanage. Dory and her brothers need a hideout, and suddenly the elevator and the abandoned hotel it leads to provide just the solution they need.
