  Sammy Sadler, a rising country star at 21 years-old, feels hot blood flow out of the bullet wound in his shoulder. Sadler is disoriented. The driver of their car makes a mad dash up the road as more bullets pierce the air. The gunman turns his attention to one man. Kevin Hughes, Chart Director for Cash Box magazine, was shot dead on March 9,1989 in the middle of 16th Avenue. The murderer disappears in the shadows, seemingly getting away with the crime. Known as the Murder on Music Row played out like a movie scene, but it was a living nightmare for Sadler. The rumor mill churned ruthlessly about his "possible involvement" in the unsolved crime. His career and his marriage crumbled. He struggled to recover from lasting P.T.S.D and an injury compromising the use of his hand. The mystery of that fatal night did not fade. It gained attention on national outlets such as "Unsolved Mysteries," "America's Most Wanted," "Nancy Grace," and more. It wasn't until 2003 that former Chart Director for Cash Box magazine, Richard D'Antionio was convicted of the murder.   At the end of the Spanish Civil War, the government of the Francoist “New Spain” set in motion a complex and Machiavellian system of repression directed against all those Republican prisoners who had lost the war. From that moment on, hundreds of thousands of prisoners (Republicans or not) suffered first-hand the torture of forced labour, internment in concentration camps or in prisons or, in certain cases, death. Although in the vast majority of cases the victims of reprisals belonged to political parties, unions and other left-wing organisations, some internees were practising Catholics educated by the Piarists but were still not spared. This is the story of Enrique, one of those internees, who in 1936, shortly after his twentieth birthday, found himself obliged to take part in a civil war instead of continuing his medical studies at university. Over the following 20 years, his determination to finish his degree did not waver and although he did not fire a single shot, because he spent the war working in a hospital, he was given a Summary Military Trial, sentenced to twelve years and one day for “aiding the rebellion”, suffered internment in concentration camps and prisons and was sent to work battalions where he carried out forced labour, and all that despite being Catholic and right-wing. Quite simply, he was on the wrong side at the least opportune time.

  Welcome to Seniors' Stories Volume 10.  
  These stories are so worthwhile because we have all come through the same decades and changes in our lives which is why we relate to the stories so well. We know they are believable, we know they tell of our life changes for entertainment for us, but also they educate those readers who didn’t, especially our descendants. 
  For those who have not experienced life anywhere but in Australia, reading of the experiences of our many immigrants who compare their life growing stages to how we experience ours here, is a wonderful education in itself not to mention how interesting they are and very entertaining. 
  It has become prominent knowledge that the ‘theme’ we offer each year is what creates the interest (for the senior authors from NSW) to put pen to paper and this year of 2024, there was a popular theme, What Made Me, resulting in an onslaught of creative entries. Over five hundred were received this year, so congratulations to the talented writers who actually came through the vetting and judging process successfully. It really is a reward worthy of congratulating, in itself. Happy listening!
