    ABOUT THE ORIGINAL BOOK
“Natives” by Akala is a powerful memoir that explores the complexities of race, class, and identity in modern Britain. Drawing from his personal experiences as a mixed-race man growing up in a working-class environment, Akala critically examines the lasting impact of Britain’s imperial past on contemporary society. The book discusses themes of systemic racism, the legacies of empire, and the intersection of race and class, using both personal anecdotes and political analysis. Through sharp reflections and historical insights, Akala challenges societal narratives, offering a unique perspective on race relations in Britain today.

Actionable Ethics is part of a larger regimen of ethics training, for the company (but, more broadly-speaking, for life). What makes it different is the fact that it shares techniques gleaned from neuroscience on how to make moral behavior habitual. As Aristotle said, “Excellence is not an act, but a habit." Almost every other ethics book or course available addresses itself to the front of the brain (where executive function takes place). Actionable Ethics, by contrast, addresses itself to the back of the brain, where habit-formation occurs, to create positive behaviors, or, as Cicero put it thousands of years ago, a “second nature”. Do good guys finish last? Did we evolve to look out for number one? Are we bad by nature? At first glance, the theory of evolution seems to imply that all organisms are evolved to be selfish.

In this book, evolutionary psychologist Dennis Krebs explains how virtuous behaviors such as altruism, justice, honesty, loyalty, self-control, purity, and respect for authority, have evolved in humans and other species. He argues that the key to solving puzzles of morality—such as what it is, how we acquire moral traits, why we sometimes behave badly, and how we make moral decisions—lies in figuring out what adaptive functions moral traits served in early human environments and how they are influenced by social learning, culture, and strategic social interactions in the modern world. Arguing that the primary function of virtuous behaviors is to enable individuals to advance their own interests and examining the moral decision-making mechanisms that evolved to serve these functions, this book considers the "new brain" mechanisms that are unique to humans and "old brain" mechanisms that we share with other species, illuminating how these work in conjunction with each other to guide our moral choices.

When you read about what I got up to you’re going to say I got what I deserved. You’re right—I totally agree. Many of you won't like me no doubt and that’s ok—I understand, I really do. I’m not all bad though.I left the Isle of Skye in the early eighties to begin my nursing course in Edinburgh and it's fair to say I embraced the Capitals temptations with arms wide open. When I moved into a shared flat I met Bill, a musician, and got involved with his band Low Down, you know, helping them out, doing a bit of driving and humping gear about - it was great fun. Low Down were truly phenomenal. Man, I totally loved their music. We took drugs, I mean, I took drugs. Nothing heavy, just recreational-like.I met a lot of girls who I didn’t treat right and I’m not proud of my behaviour—honest. Nursing is a female-dominated profession and male nurses were thin on the ground. The opportunities for getting up to mischief were many. I worked hard and played harder.A lot of stuff I regret now. Especially what I did to Lisa – and others. Anyway, it couldn’t last, could it? The way I was living – something had to give. And it did.
