Summary

What Is Memristor

Electrical components with two terminals and a non-linear connection between the flow of electric charge and magnetic flux are known as memristors. Leon Chua was the one who first characterized and gave it its name in 1971. With its addition, a theoretical quartet of essential electrical components was completed, which also included the resistor, the capacitor, and the inductor.

Two mathematicians explore how math fits into everything from art, music, and literature to space probes and game shows. In this vibrant work, which is ideal for both teaching and learning, Apoorva Khare and Anna Lachowska explain the mathematics essential for understanding and appreciating our quantitative world. They show with examples that mathematics is a key tool in the creation and appreciation of art, music, and literature, not just science and technology. The book covers basic mathematical topics from logarithms to statistics, but the authors eschew mundane finance and probability problems. Instead, they explain how modular arithmetic helps keep our online transactions safe, how logarithms justify the twelve-tone scale commonly used in music, and how transmissions by deep space probes are like knights serving as messengers for their traveling prince.Perfect for coursework in introductory mathematics and requiring no knowledge of calculus, Khare and Lachowska’s enlightening mathematics tour will appeal to a wide audience.“A whirlwind tour through mathematics and its applications to the real world, laced with stimulating exercises and fascinating historical insights. Destined to become a classic of mathematical exposition.” —Eli Maor, author of e: the Story of a Number and Trigonometric Delights“Khare and Lachowska introduce bite-size pieces of important math by surrounding them with interesting context, from the Monty Hall problem for probability to a story by Dino Buzzati for velocity. Math treated with seriousness and fun.” —Michael Frame, co-author, with Benoit Mandelbrot, of Fractals, Graphics, and Mathematics Education“An excellent book, well-suited for a thoughtful, quantitatively-rigorous ‘Math for Humanists’ course.” —William Goldbloom Bloch, author of The Unimaginable Mathematics of Borges’ Library of Babel

But many of us often achieve the goal of losing weight but have a hard time maintaining it. They reach their desired goal weight and then eventually fall off the wagon and go back to their former eating habits that was the cause of their weight problem before. Metabolism is said to play a role in weight loss. If you have a high metabolism, you burn more calories while at rest and in motion. A person with low metabolism will burn fewer calories while at rest and during activities so they have to eat less to avoid becoming overweight. Certain diets have come out to target and change a person's metabolism. If you want to start a lifelong change of losing and maintaining your goal weight, altering the way your body burns calories may be beneficial. A metabolic diet aims to change how your body metabolizes food. The overall goal of metabolic-centered diets is to create lasting changes in your diet and lifestyle. In this audiobook, you will discover food that can slow down or speed up your metabolism. You will find out how you'll be able to eat more food and feel more satisfied while consuming less calories and fats. You will learn why eating extreme low-calorie diets may initially help you lose weight but will still lead you to fail in the long run. “Integrates history, technology, sociology, economics, and politics with this remarkable insect serving as the unifying concept” (Buffalo News).   The tiny, industrious honey bee has become part of popular imagination—reflected in our art, our advertising, even our language itself with such terms as queen bee and busy as a bee. Honey bees—and the values associated with them—have influenced American culture for four centuries. Bees and beekeepers have represented order and stability throughout the changes, challenges, and expansions of a highly diverse country.  Bees in America is an enlightening cultural history of bees and beekeeping in the United States. Tammy Horn, herself a beekeeper, offers a social and technological history from the colonial period, when the British first brought bees to the New World, to the present, when bees are being trained by the American military to detect bombs. Horn shows how the honey bee was one of the first symbols of colonization and how bees’ societal structures shaped our ideals about work, family, community, and leisure. This book is both a fascinating read and an “excellent example of the effects agriculture has on history” (Booklist).   “A wealth of worthy material.” —Publishers Weekly

Sometime after dark on March 27, 2010, Arizona rancher Robert Krentz was found dead next to his four-wheeler on the grounds of his ranch on the Arizona-Mexico border. Krentz and his dog, Blue, had been missing since that morning. They were last heard from when he radioed his brother to say that he’d found an illegal alien on the property and was going to offer him assistance. The man Krentz encountered that day shot and killed him and his dog, without warning, before escaping to Mexico. It’s difficult to overstate the impact of Krentz’s death, which turned the issue of Arizona’s unsecured border—a crisis that the federal government had repeatedly ignored—into a national concern. As Arizona sheriff Larry Dever said in his testimony before the Senate Homeland Security Committee, “We cannot sit by while our citizens are terrorized, robbed, and murdered by ruthless and desperate people who enter our country illegally.” This momentum helped pass SB 1070, a bill that authorizes local law enforcement under certain conditions to question persons reasonably suspected of being illegal aliens, which Governor Jan Brewer and the state legislature had been working on for months. With the passage of this controversial bill, the state of Arizona became ground zero in the impassioned debate over illegal immigration. The Democrats and the media went into overdrive, denouncing the state and its governor as racists and Nazis.Governor Brewer, a lifelong Arizona resident with deep ties to the community, was first elected to the Arizona House of Representatives in 1982, and hasn’t lost an election since. As a state official, she watched with increasing dismay as illegal immigration exploded across Arizona’s border, and noticed the devastating effect it was having on the state. Causing an escalation in violence, an influx of drugs, and prisons and hospitals to fill to overflowing, this problem was not only wreaking havoc on the moral fabric of the community but placing an even greater strain on Arizona’s beleaguered health, educational, and social welfare networks. Growing frustrated with the failure of the federal government to respond to her pleas for assistance, Governor Brewer led the state to action. Scorpions for Breakfast is Brewer’s commonsense account of her fight to secure our nation’s border in the face of persistent federal inaction. Her book is vital reading for all Americans interested in the real change that can happen when local leaders take the initiative to preserve our country and our laws.
