First, there is the reaction from the aristocracy in England; a valediction from Edmund Burke, an MP in the British Parliament, on the beauty of Marie Antoinette and his sadness at her passing.Four speeches follow by Maximilien de Robespierre, a foundational member of the French Revolution, who laid down the political philosophy of liberty and the moral law over divinity and customary law. The speeches are filled with a passion for direct democracy and the rule of the people, not the elites.The volume ends with a more measured, but no less impassioned, address by the Irish lawyer and statesman John Curran. It was given in Curran’s defence of Archibald Rowan, who was sentenced to transportation to Australia for his treasonous activities fighting for Irish independence. While unsuccessful, this rallying cry for genuine self-determination and free speech captures the heart of the conflicts that defined the era.

Although the American government expressed sympathy towards the plight of the Armenians in the 1910s and 1920s, historian Julien Zarifian explores how, from the 1960s, a set of geopolitical and institutional factors soon led the United States to adopt a policy of genocide nonrecognition which it would cling to for over fifty years, through Republican and Democratic administrations alike. He describes the forces on each side of this issue: activists from the US Armenian diaspora and their allies, challenging Cold War statesmen worried about alienating NATO ally Turkey and dealing with a widespread American reluctance to directly confront the horrors of the past. Drawing from congressional records, rare newspapers, and interviews with lobbyists and decision-makers, he reveals how genocide recognition became such a complex, politically sensitive issue.

  In the 1982 State of the Union address on January 26, 1982, Reagan invokes his self-deprecating humor and calls for “a new spirit of partnership between this Congress and this administration”. Reagan cites the “stagflation” of the 1970s: double digit inflation, interest rates over 21%, and over 8 million unemployed.  
  Reagan notes economic improvement and calls for reduced federal spending, further tax reductions, and fewer regulations, saying our economic problems “are the inheritance of decades of tax and tax and spend and spend.”  
  Reagan calls for dismantling the Departments of Energy and Education but keeping a reliable safety net for those in need by rooting out waste and fraud in the food stamp, Medicare, and Medicaid programs. Reagan decries the growth in federal grant programs to state and local governments and calls for major reforms. 
  A short paragraph was lost at 23:15 of the Ronald Reagan presidential library recording. The missing words can be seen in the text version. 
  In meetings with foreign leaders, Reagan “spoke of the strength of the free marketplace system and how that system could help them realize their aspirations for economic development and political freedom.” Reagan endorses sanctions against the Soviet Union for its actions in Poland and Afghanistan, and urges “that we rebuild our defenses.”  
  Reagan concludes with a call to work together to preserve “the sacred flame of liberty -- this last, best hope of man on Earth.” This address followed the assassination attempt and the applause at the start and end was extensive.
