  Leadership from Bad to Worse is about how leadership that is bad, invariably, inexorably, gets worse—unless it is somehow, by someone or something, stopped or slowed. 
   
   
   
  This work draws on four cases of bad leadership—two in political leadership, two in business leadership—to show how it goes from bad to worse. Kellerman finds that bad leadership and bad followership go through four phases of development: 1) Onward and Upward; 2) Followers Join In; 3) Leaders Start In; and 4) Bad to Worse. These findings correctly suggest that the book, in addition to being of theoretical interest, is of practical import. It is intended, deliberately, to serve as an early warning system. By breaking bad leadership and followership into phases—each more ominous and ultimately dangerous than the one preceding—their progression will be easier to predict and detect. And easier, therefore, to slow or, preferably, to stop before they turn toxic. 
   
   
   
  Bad leadership is a social disease. But unlike diseases that are physical or psychological, it remains at the margins of our collective concerns. Leadership from Bad to Worse is, then, a corrective. Knowing that bad leadership can be checked before it corrupts is knowing that bad and then worse can be, if not completely precluded, then sometimes short-circuited.

This lack of insight leads them to overestimate their abilities and make decisions based on flawed reasoning. As a result, they may unknowingly engage in behaviors that exacerbate their incompetence, further reinforcing their false sense of expertise. 
  One of the most compelling aspects of the Dunning-Kruger effect is its broad applicability across various fields. From everyday social interactions to high-stakes decision-making in professional environments, this cognitive bias affects people at all levels. In the workplace, for example, leaders with limited knowledge in a specific domain may make decisions that negatively impact their teams, while employees with expertise may remain silent or defer to those who appear more confident. In education, students and teachers alike may fall victim to this effect, with the former believing they fully understand a topic despite limited comprehension, and the latter overestimating their teaching efficacy.

  Huey Newton was born on February 17, 1942. He was an African-American revolutionary, notable as the founder of the Black Panther Party. Newton crafted the Party's ten-point manifesto with Bobby Seale in 1966. 
   
  The Black Panther Party founded over 60 community support programs including food banks, medical clinics, sickle cell anemia tests, prison busing for families of inmates, legal advice seminars, clothing banks, housing cooperatives, and their own ambulance service. The most famous of these programs was the Free Breakfast for Children program which fed thousands of impoverished children daily during the early 1970s. Newton also co-founded the Black Panther newspaper service, which became one of America's most widely distributed African-American newspapers. 
   
  In 1989, he was murdered in Oakland, California, by Tyrone Robinson, a member of the Black Guerrilla Family. Newton was known for being an advocate of self-defense and used his position as a leader within the Black Panther Party to welcome women and LGBT people into the party, holding the belief that homosexuals "might be the most oppressed people". 
   
  Huey Newton was never shy in talking to the media because after all the powerful movement he started with bobby Seale was all about communication and understanding leading to meaningful change. 
   
  What follows is a collection of interviews with the controversial charismatic leader commencing from his prison cell in 1968 right up until 1989 just weeks before his tragic death.   The history of China in the twentieth century is comprised of a long series of shocks: the 1911 revolution, the civil war between the communists and the nationalists, the Japanese invasion, the revolution, the various catastrophic campaigns initiated by Chairman Mao between 1949 and 1976, its great opening to the world under Deng, and the Tiananmen Square Massacre. 
   
   
   
  Yuan-tsung Chen lived through most of it, and at certain points in close proximity to the seat of communist power. Born in Shanghai in 1929, she came to know Zhou En-Lai as a young girl while living in Chongqing, where Chiang Kai-Shek's government had relocated to, during the war against Japan. That connection to Zhou helped her save her husband's life in Cultural Revolution. After the communists took power, she obtained a job in one of the culture ministries. She frequently engaged with the upper echelon of the party and was a first-hand witness to some of the purges that the regime regularly initiated. Eventually, the commissar she worked under was denounced in 1957, and she barely escaped being purged herself. Later, during Cultural Revolution, she and her husband were purged and sent to live in a rough, poor area. They finally moved to Hong Kong, with Zhou's permission, in 1971. Chen gives a first-hand account of what life was like in the period before the revolution and in Mao's China.
