When's the last time you got to pick a folklorist's brain?
Did you know memes count as folklore?
Or that folklorists assign numbers to fairy tales to keep track of them all?
The field of folklore studies is over two centuries old, and it's full of amazing insights about human behavior, creativity, and community. Folklore studies is as interdisciplinary as it gets, squished somewhere between anthropology and linguistics and religious studies and comparative literature and more. It’s all about the informal human interactions, the million tiny acts and stories and beliefs and arts that function as social glue even if they seem beneath notice. Do traditional holiday foods have a deeper meaning? Yep. Same with folk music, ballads, proverbs, jokes, urban legends, body art, and a ton more genres covered in this book.
Is the whole book as easy to read and irreverent as this description? Yep. This fun, accessible guide to the academic study of folklore packs in a college class's worth of material, from basic concepts and major folklore genres to special topics based on identity, fancy theories, and more.
If you've always wanted to take a folklore class, or you're a writer or artist using folklore in your work, or you're just generally interested in the topic, this is the book for you!

Naturally, when the history of medieval England is discussed, the Angles and Saxons are usually mentioned first. After all, the name “England” does mean “land of the Angles” and the English language is derived from the ancient Germanic language the Angles spoke. The Saxons are also usually mentioned since they became the dominant tribe in England by the 9th century, incorporating the Angles into their new version of Britain. The ancient Britons, who were a Celtic people, are often mentioned, as are the Scots-Irish and the Picts who lived in what is today Scotland. Thus, the Jutes are overlooked among the early inhabitants of Britain, though not for any lack of accomplishments or influence on their part. The Jutes first came to England in a wave of migration with the Angles and Saxons in the 5th century and established one of the earliest Germanic kingdoms on the island. The Jutes also played a major role in Britain’s adoption of Christianity and the island’s evolution from one of many warring tribes and kingdoms to being a unified kingdom that provided the foundation for the medieval and modern British nation-state.
Either way, once the Jutes landed in England, they immediately distinguished themselves from the Angles and Saxons by carving out kingdoms in the regions of Kent and the Isle of Wight. From these two locations, the Jutes not only carried on many of their pre-migration cultural traditions but also adopted some of the new, unifying European traditions, particularly Christianity. The Jutes did not accept Christianity overnight, and even after accepting the influence of the Roman Catholic Church, they continued to lead warrior lifestyles, but they nonetheless became major defenders of the Catholic faith and the most holy site in Christian England, Canterbury, was located in the Kingdom of Kent.

Resettled refugees in America face a land of daunting obstacles where small things—one person, one encounter—can make all the difference in getting ahead or falling behind.

Fleeing war and violence, many refugees dream that moving to the United States will be like going to Heaven. Instead, they enter a deeply unequal American society, often at the bottom. Through the lived experiences of families resettled from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Blair Sackett and Annette Lareau reveal how a daunting obstacle course of agencies and services can drastically alter refugees' experiences building a new life in America.

In these stories of struggle and hope, as one volunteer said, "you see the American story." For some families, minor mistakes create catastrophes—food stamps cut off, educational opportunities missed, benefits lost. Other families, with the help of volunteers and social supports, escape these traps and take steps toward reaching their dreams. Engaging and eye-opening, We Thought It Would Be Heaven brings listeners into the daily lives of Congolese refugees and offers guidance for how activists, workers, and policymakers can help refugee families thrive.
