Sinopse

What is Color Mapping

This function is known as image color transfer, and it is responsible for mapping (transforming) the colors of one image (the source) to the colors of another image (the target). It is possible to refer to a color mapping as either the algorithm that produces the mapping function or the method that alters the colors of the image. The process of modifying a picture is frequently referred to as color transfer or, when grayscale photos are involved, brightness transfer function (BTF). Additionally, it may also be referred to as photometric camera calibration or radiometric camera calibration.

At the end of the 19th century one of the most eminent scientists of the day in effect declared, "We know everything now; the rest is just measurement…," but he didn't know how the sun worked or what was inside an atom or how old the universe was.

Many scientists at the time were content to simply say, "God did it."

Strangely enough, around 25 years or so later, a Catholic priest didn't think that was a good enough answer. He met with Albert Einstein to discuss a hypothesis he'd developed using Einstein's own Theory of Relativity to show how the universe might have a beginning. Sadly, Albert was not impressed at the time and said so.

In the years that followed, the priest was largely forgotten. In 1964, after the forced resettlement of a couple of pigeons from a borrowed piece of equipment, two surprised engineers received one of the oddest Nobel Prize nominations ever.

The priest is not the only character whom history almost forgot. There's the woman who gave us a way to measure interstellar distances and the woman who showed us what the sun is actually made of. Neither of them received a Nobel Prize.

Today we know how the sun works, what's inside an atom and how old the universe is.

How? And what on earth do the Dambusters have to do with it?

Into Stability: Walter R. Evans and the Story of Root Locus tells the remarkable story of a quiet but transformative breakthrough in engineering—one that reshaped modern control systems and helped guide technological progress during the Cold War.
In the late 1940s, as engineers struggled to design increasingly complex feedback systems for aircraft, radar, and emerging technologies, stability remained one of the most difficult problems in control engineering. Walter Evans, working with a rare combination of mathematical insight and practical intuition, developed a graphical technique that allowed engineers to visualize how system stability changed as parameters shifted. This method—later known as the root locus—quickly became one of the most powerful and widely taught tools in control theory.
The book traces Evans’s journey from his early life and education through the intellectual environment that shaped his thinking, revealing how curiosity, persistence, and unconventional problem-solving led to a breakthrough that would influence generations of engineers.
Beyond the mathematics, Into Stability is also a human story—of family, mentorship, and the legacy of innovation. Gregory W. Evans blends personal recollections with historical context to illuminate how one engineer’s idea spread through classrooms, laboratories, and industries worldwide. The result is both a tribute and a historical narrative that captures the spirit of discovery that drives engineering progress.
Ultimately, the book reveals how a deceptively simple graphical technique became a cornerstone of modern control engineering—shaping everything from aerospace systems to robotics and beyond—while honoring the life and contributions of the man who first drew stability into view.

    Backvalley Ferrets - A Rewilding...

Twice declared extinct, North America's most endangered mammal species, the black-footed ferret (BFF), is making a comeback thanks to an evolving conservation regimen at more than thirty reintroduction sites across the continent. Lawrence Lenhart lingers at one such site in his proverbial backyard, the Aubrey Valley in northern Arizona.

The beguiling weasel at the center of this book is more than a charismatic minifauna; it is the covert ambassador of a critical ecosystem that has dwindled to one percent of its former size. In a landscape menaced by habitat fragmentation, bacterial plague, settler colonialism, and soil death, a ferret must be resilient. Lenhart investigates the human efforts to sustain the species through monitoring, vaccination, captive breeding, and even cloning.

Lenhart balances this lens of environmental witness with personal essaying that captures the parallel story of his wife's pregnancy as he realizes the ferret's conservation story is dramatically synchronized with her trimesters. In preparing to raise a child in the Anthropocene, Lenhart takes stock of his own ecosystem and finds something is amiss. Through an ethic of "deeper ecology," Lenhart must hone his ecological interest in the black-footed ferret to assure it isn't overshadowed by his own paternal interests.
