"The French Revolution" by Thomas Carlyle is a classic historical work that chronicles the events leading up to and during the French Revolution. Written in 1837, Carlyle's account is known for its vivid and passionate style, and for its ability to bring to life the key figures and events of the revolution.
The book begins with an analysis of the state of France in the late 18th century, and the social and economic conditions that contributed to the revolution. It then goes on to provide a detailed account of the revolution itself, including the storming of the Bastille, the Reign of Terror, and the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte.
Throughout the book, Carlyle emphasizes the role of individual actors and their personal struggles and motivations, rather than simply analyzing the structural forces at play. He also reflects on the broader philosophical and moral questions raised by the revolution, such as the nature of power, the relationship between the individual and the state, and the struggle for liberty.
Overall, "The French Revolution" is a powerful and engaging work of history that offers a unique perspective on one of the most significant events of modern times.

There was not any one entity more central to the Yahwistic Judean religion during the monarchy than the temple of Solomon. It symbolized the presence of YHWH in the nation, as well as his enduring protection of the nation and the Davidic royal throne. Judean worshippers directed their prayers toward the Solomonic temple, and eventually, the Judean prophets and theologians declared that this was the only legitimate location where priests could perform sacrifices and other religious rites for YHWH. Its significance can be seen most clearly in the dramatic cognitive dissonance experienced by the Judeans in Babylonian captivity after the destruction of the temple, which had been so central to their religious conception that they had great difficulty reconciling its destruction with their continued belief in YHWH at all.
Jerusalem was uninhabited for much of the 6th century B.C., and this period is known as the exile to Babylon, and Bible scholars believe that it was during those years that the Jewish people came into contact with several stories and legends that would later be incorporated into their sacred writings. A generation later, Achaemenid Persian Emperor Cyrus the Great allowed the Jews who so wished to return to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple and reestablish their nation.
The Temple Mount remains the holiest place in Judaism and among the holiest in Islam, and due in part to that religious sensitivity and the current placement of the Al-Aqsa Mosque there, archaeological work is almost nonexistent. As a result, some have continued to question whether Solomon’s Temple ever actually existed, pointing not only to lack of physical evidence but also the fact that contemporary Jewish literature aside from the Bible makes no mention of it. The political tensions between the modern state of Israel and the Palestinians have also made the temple and all of Jerusalem contentious issues.

Three young Jewish sisters from Leipzig, Germany huddle together in the cold darkness of night waiting for their smugglers to rescue them and bring them to freedom in Belgium. Their mother, in a state of shock following Kristallnacht, is left behind, sedated in a psychiatric hospital. November 1938 begins the four year ordeal of the seven member Kroch family who endure unfathomable conditions in their fight for survival: imprisonment in French internment camps, hiding in a tiny tool shed, and adapting to the deplorable conditions of a Nazi prison. The memoirs of Alexandra, age eleven, and her sisters, fifteen year old Eva and fourteen year old Judith, interweave as they recount the true story of their escape from the Nazis.

Leaving behind their life of luxury, the girls describe unimaginable hunger, deprivation, and fear. Family love, music, and the close friendship of strangers are the essential ingredients that sustain them through the hardships they face. A narrative backdrop threads through the story, providing the socio-political context. From a historical perspective and from the three sisters' witness accounts, the listener will come to understand the progression of antisemitism in Germany and France, the course by which Hitler dismantled democracy, the role France adopted as Nazi collaborators, and how the Swiss policies towards Jews were executed.
