Sinopsis

Flavius Josephus's 'Selections From Josephus' offers readers a glimpse into the fascinating world of ancient Jewish history and culture. Through a series of carefully selected writings, Josephus provides accounts of significant events such as the Jewish War and the destruction of the Second Temple. His writing style is both detailed and engaging, making the historical narratives come to life for readers. The book also serves as a valuable resource for understanding the literary context of ancient Judea and the Roman Empire, shedding light on the political and religious dynamics of the time. Flavius Josephus, a first-century Jewish historian and scholar, drew on his firsthand experiences and extensive knowledge to create 'Selections From Josephus'. His background as a military leader and eyewitness to key historical events informs the rich content of the book, providing readers with a unique perspective on ancient Jewish history. Josephus's expertise in both Jewish and Roman cultures adds depth and authenticity to his writings. I highly recommend 'Selections From Josephus' to readers interested in delving into the complexities of ancient Judea and the Roman Empire. This book offers a wealth of historical insights and vivid storytelling that will captivate anyone with a passion for ancient history and cultural studies.

The Netherlands has had a complex and turbulent history involving the interplay of multiple political entities, ethnicities, and languages. The term "Netherlands" (Nederland in Dutch, Pay-Bas in French) refers to the low-lying topography of the region and today is used specifically to describe the country bordering Germany and Belgium, but historically it referred to the entire region occupied by Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg. In English, the term "Low Countries" is still used in this sense.
What made the Netherlands’ global influence in the 17th century all the more remarkable is that the Dutch had only recently achieved political independence through the process of fighting a long and brutal war of resistance against rule by the Spanish Hapsburgs, starting in 1568. In 1581, the seven northern provinces – Holland, Zeeland, Utrecht, Gelderland, Overijssel, Friesland, and Groningen – declared their independence, and fighting took place back and forth on land and sea for decades, with the Dutch receiving some much-needed assistance from England’s Queen Elizabeth I. Thousands of civilians were massacred by the rampaging Spanish armies, and on the water, Dutch “sea beggars” attacked and harassed the Spanish fleet. Pro-Spanish privateers operating out of Dunkirk did the same against Dutch shipping.
Although there were several issues behind the revolt, like heavy taxation, the war was also in large part a religious revolt. The Dutch in the northern and western provinces had mostly become Protestants, followers primarily of the French theologian John Calvin, and there were some Lutherans and Anabaptists present as well). Calvinism as institutionalized in the Dutch Reformed Church would become the officially recognized faith of independent Netherlands, but Philip II, the Catholic monarch of Spain, was determined to restore Catholicism through the strict use of the Inquisition against “heretics."

The definitive biography of the legendary Empresario who colonized Texas for the Mexican government before leading the Texas Revolution.   First published in 1925, The Life of Stephen F. Austin remains one of the finest works of Texas biography. An historian at the University of Texas, Eugene C. Barker spent nearly twenty-five years researching and writing this magisterial narrative, combining impeccable academic standards with engaging and lively prose.   The son of Moses Austin, who received an empresario grant from Spain to settle Texas, Stephen took the mantle and began settling the region for the newly independent state of Mexico. He sold parcels of land to families of Anglo-Americans who later became known as the Old Three Hundred. When this growing Anglo community rebelled against the Mexican government, Austin led volunteer forces to victory at the Siege of Bexar and later served as Secretary of State for the Republic of Texas under President Houston.

People with disabilities are often excluded from full participation in church communities. Accessibility is a key component of the biblical ministry of reconciliation—but it's not enough. To truly work toward reconciliation, churches must both consider the theological implications of disability and also become places where people with disabilities lead.
Disabling Leadership presents a practical theology of disability for thoughtful church leaders and congregants. Written by practitioners and a scholar-pastor who are engaged in ministry together, this book encompasses cutting-edge theological ethics as well as stories of how such commitments are embodied in a real church community. The authors equip readers to explore key themes such as:

    - what it means to be human
    - how to understand suffering and healing
    - how churches can be welcoming and accessible communities
    - how to face common challenges and issues in resisting ableismDisabling Leadership moves beyond paternalistic views of disability that seek to extract "inspiration" from another's story without engaging in the difficult work of just and dignifying relationships. When we foster genuinely inclusive leadership teams, the authors contend, our churches will be less likely to treat anyone as a "project" and will better reflect God's love as the body of Christ.

Over the course of the 19th century, the people of Sicily found themselves at the center of a struggle for freedom, one that ended up being long and often very bloody. It was during these crucial years of struggle that the Sicilian mafia, La cosa nostra (“Our thing”), started to take shape. The original word “mafia” was a part of Palermitan slang, and although the origins of the word are not completely certain, some linguistic historians believe it originally meant “flashy.” One historian of the mafia, Salvatore Lupo, helpfully suggests that it was used in its earliest iterations to vaguely refer to a “pathological relationship among politics, society and criminality.”
In response to the rise of the mafia, the Italian state propagated a doctrine of Sicilian backwardness, which they used to introduce martial law and suspend civil liberties, under the pretext that they were not “ready” for the freedoms enjoyed by other Italian regions.[6] Northerners and foreigners mistakenly (and snobbishly) believed that the mafia was just a relic of the primitive, peasant culture that had dominated the island for centuries, and that it was destined to die out once the island had been properly absorbed into the dominant, mainland culture. Others hypothesized that the corruption in Sicilian culture was just a holdover from the Bourbon government and would soon be extinguished once a formal transition was completed.
Of course, they proved to be dead wrong. The Sicilian mafia was not a criminal underworld or a form of political rebellion, but more of a kingdom within a kingdom. In other words, according to historians of the mafia, it was a network of hidden power, an alternative hierarchy that sometimes worked in concert with and sometimes superseded official forms of law and order.

Renowned psychoanalyst Erich Fromm investigates the universal language of symbols, expressed through dream and myths, and how it illuminates our humanity.  In this study, Erich Fromm opens up the world of symbolic language, “the one foreign language that each of us must learn.” Understanding symbols, he posits, helps us reach the hidden layers of our individual personalities, as well as connect with our common human experiences. By grasping the symbolic language of dreams, Fromm explains, we can then also understand the deeper wisdom of myths, art, and literature. This also gives us access to what we, and our society, usually repress. Fromm shares the history of dream interpretations, and demonstrates his analysis of many types of dreams. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Erich Fromm including rare images and never-before-seen documents from the author’s estate.
