Sinossi

Phoenician Port Strategy explores how Phoenician city-states achieved naval dominance and economic influence in the ancient Mediterranean despite their limited land resources. The book argues that their success wasn't solely due to shipbuilding or navigation, but a comprehensive approach to port management. Intriguingly, these cities, like Tyre and Sidon, optimized their port infrastructure into hubs of naval power and trade, shaping trade routes and impacting other civilizations. This study highlights the crucial role of infrastructure and logistics, challenging traditional views that prioritize military conquest as the sole determinant of ancient power.

The book examines the strategic significance of Phoenician harbors, innovative logistical systems, and socio-political structures. It progresses systematically, first defining core concepts and historical context. Subsequent sections delve into harbor design and construction, organizational structures managing port operations, and the interplay between port infrastructure and naval power. Archaeological evidence, ancient texts, and comparative studies support the analysis, culminating in an examination of the Phoenician legacy for contemporary port management and naval strategy.

A Spectator Best Book of the Year
Trawling through a vast family archive and arcane sources in half a dozen languages, Adam Zamoyski has revealed the dramatic life of his great-great-great grandmother, an uneducated, vulnerable girl cast into a man’s world.
Her aristocratic position enmeshed her in high politics and close encounters with Frederick the Great, Benjamin Franklin, Rousseau, Joseph II, Marie-Antoinette and Tsar Alexander I, and earned her the enmity of Catherine the Great. She lived through revolution and no less than five wars, in which her cherished homes were devastated, her possessions looted and her children scattered. Caught up in tempestuous love affairs which led her to nervous breakdown and the brink of suicide, exploited by her lovers, she remained undaunted and liberated herself through education. And, unusually for her time, she became a caring mother devoted to her children.
She learned much by travelling extensively around Europe at a time of political and ideological change, and her observations, particularly on Georgian Britain, are remarkable. She gradually won the admiration of learned men and intellectual honours. She pioneered schooling for children of the poor and developed her own educational methods. Fascinated by the power of objects to kindle memories and arouse emotions, she was an avid collector of anything with a sensuous association and built two unique museums to act as teaching aids.
This is a story of triumph over adversity and betrayal. It was not achieved by her looks: ‘I have never been beautiful, but I have sometimes been pretty,’ she wrote. It was achieved by force of character and resilience.
This non-fiction biography of Izabela the Valiant, a woman of character and resilience, takes the reader on a journey through the rebellions and revolutions of her time. Her story, deeply intertwined with the history of Poland, is a captivating exploration of royalty, politics, and personal strength.
For fans of Christopher Clark (Kaiser Wilhelm II), Martyn C. Rady (The Habsburgs), Norman Davies (George II), Tom Holland (Athelstan), and Simon Sebag Montefiore (Jerusalem).

This meticulously researched work chronicles the dramatic evolution of Japanese society, politics, and culture across five crucial periods that shaped modern Japan.
The Edo Period (1603-1868) sets the stage for Japan's modernization, examining the isolationist Sakoku policy that limited foreign contact for over two centuries. Explore how this era of peace under Tokugawa rule fostered a unique urban culture, flourishing arts, and a complex social hierarchy.
The Meiji Era (1868-1912) unveils Japan's remarkable metamorphosis following the fall of the shogunate. Witness the rapid industrialization, constitutional monarchy, and wholesale adoption of Western technologies and institutions that transformed Japan.
The Taisho Era (1912-1926), though brief, represents a critical period of liberalization and cultural experimentation. Discover the blossoming of democratic ideals, the emergence of "Taisho democracy," and the cultural renaissance that saw Western influences blend with traditional Japanese aesthetics during this often-overlooked chapter of Japanese history.
The Showa Era (1926-1989) encompasses Japan's most tumultuous and consequential decades, from militarism and war to miraculous economic recovery. Follow Japan's journey through ultranationalism, World War II, Allied occupation, and its stunning rise as an economic superpower.
Imperial Japan (1868-1945) examines the nation's complex imperial period, from the restoration of Emperor Meiji to the aftermath of World War II. Understand the interplay between ancient imperial traditions and modern state-building that fueled Japan's rise as a colonial power and its fateful path to war.

Once, in a place called Gaza, Jewish families lived among gardens, vineyards, and the peaceful sound of the sea. It was a land filled with beauty and hope. The Jewish people who lived there loved their homes, their schools, and their neighborhoods.
In a spirit of peace, the Jews gave this land to their Palestinian neighbors, hoping it would be the beginning of friendship. But sadly, instead of peace, the leaders called Hamas destroyed the gardens and vineyards. They built only concrete walls and hidden tunnels meant to bring harm, not kindness.
Since then, the people of Israel have not found the peace they offered. On October 7, 2023, a terrible attack brought much sorrow and fear. Since that day, the Jewish people have faced more pain and danger, even though their deepest wish is to live safely and peacefully in their homeland.
This book was written so children and families around the world will know the story: that the Jewish people long for peace, but their neighbors chose hatred instead of friendship. The author hopes that by remembering the past and telling the truth with gentle hearts, we can all dream of a future where peace and kindness will finally grow again-like gardens by the sea. This book reflects a true story that happened in Gaza when the Jews were forced off of their land as part of a peace deal with the Palestinians. Only the names have been changed to protect the innocent.

Wade may be over, but now a bigger fight lies ahead. For over half a century, pro-life advocates have fought to protect the sanctity of human life. Now that the decision the pro-life community has been waiting and praying for has finally become a reality, a question remains: Now what? How do we continue to stand for life for everyone who bears the image of God―from womb to tomb? And if abortion disproportionately impacts the poor and the marginalized, specifically Black Americans, why should we seize this new opportunity to make right what has gone terribly wrong? Benjamin Watson, author of Under Our Skin and a former NFL player who now serves as VP of strategic relationships with Human Coalition, a pro-life organization based in Dallas, wants to galvanize the church and the pro-life movement in this new era. In The New Fight for Life, Watson    leads us into a new understanding of pro-life advocacy, shows how we can move past political debate and culture wars, and envisions a new path forward that promotes life by committing to human flourishing and holistic justice. We can create a culture where abortion is both unthinkable and unnecessary. How? By relentlessly pursuing a more just world―for everyone.

Thanks to countless written sources and corroborating archaeological evidence, the chronology of the ancient Near East is fairly well-known by modern scholars, but as with most periods in history, there are exceptions. In ancient Mesopotamia’s otherwise well-documented history, there were two dynasties that historians and archaeologists are only now beginning to understand: the Sealand I, or First Sealand Dynasty (c. 1742-1460 BCE), and the Sealand II, or Second Sealand Dynasty (c. 1025-1005 BCE). These dynasties are named after the way they are referred to in ancient texts, and they likely originated in the marshy region of southern Mesopotamia. The texts mentioning these dynasties documented them as legitimate Babylonian dynasties for the most part, but few details are ever related about the dynasties or their rulers, even though both dynasties coincided with periods when there was a lack of central power in Mesopotamia and the Sealand dynasties were briefly able to assume control of the city of Babylon itself.
The ephermal nature of Sealand’s rule is not completely understood by experts, to the extent that all kinds of aspects of these dynasties remain open to debate. Ancient sources provide an outline of these dynasties, as well as some information concerning major events, but the nature of the Sealand government, how the people lived, and even where their cities were located (if any existed) all remain unclear. Due to problems with sources, scholars have largely avoided the Sealand dynasties and the topic of the Sealand in general in favor of better-documented periods in Mesopotamian history. That being said, some recent archaeological discoveries have helped provide a base for future research that may solve some of these riddles.
