Sinopse

Powerful Art Patrons explores the significant influence of wealth and power on the creation and evolution of art throughout history. It examines how art patronage, from the Renaissance to today, has shaped not only what art is made but also who gets to see it. The book highlights the complex relationship between artists and their benefactors, demonstrating how patronage involves more than just financial support; it also involves power dynamics that can dictate artistic choices and trends.

Consider the Medici family, who commissioned groundbreaking works that defined the Renaissance, illustrating how personal fortunes can shape entire artistic movements. The book approaches this topic by tracing the evolution of art patronage across different eras. Beginning with foundational concepts, it then delves into specific historical periods and patrons, such as Peggy Guggenheim, analyzing their impact on artists and the art world.

Finally, it examines contemporary models of art funding, including corporate sponsorships and private philanthropy, and the ethical considerations involved. This approach provides a comprehensive understanding of how art patronage acts as both a catalyst for innovation and a potential constraint on artistic expression, offering valuable insights for art enthusiasts and those interested in the intersection of art, history, and economics.

Ramakrishna was an Indian Hindu mystic and religious leader, who lived in 19th-century Bengal. Ramakrishna approached his religious life through the path of devotion to the Goddess Kali, and by the observance of various elements from Tantra, Vaishnav Bhakti, and Advaita Vedanta, as well as dalliances with Christianity and Islam. After earnest practice of various religious traditions, he held that the world's religions represented "so many paths to reach one and the same goal". His followers came to regard him as a divine incarnation, as did some of the prominent scholars of his day.

Ramakrishna started his spiritual journey as a priest at the Dakshineshwar Kali Temple. Soon his mystical temperament gained him widespread acknowledgment amongst the general public attracting to him various religious teachers, social leaders, Bengali elites, and common people alike; he eventually taught his disciples, who later formed the monastic Ramakrishna Order. After his death, his chief disciple Swami Vivekananda popularized his ideas and founded the Ramakrishna Math, which provides spiritual training for monastics and householder devotees, and the Ramakrishna Mission, to provide charity, social work, and education.

Sarada Devi was the wife of Ramakrishna. Devi is also reverentially addressed as the Holy Mother by the followers of the Sri Ramakrishna monastic order. She played an important role in the growth of the Ramakrishna Movement.

The insurrection at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, was not a blip or an aberration. It was the logical outcome of years of a White evangelical subculture's preparation for war. Religion scholar and former insider Bradley Onishi maps the origins of White Christian nationalism and traces its offshoots in Preparing for War.

Combining his own experiences in the youth groups and prayer meetings of the 1990s with an immersive look at the steady blending of White grievance politics with evangelicalism, Onishi crafts an engrossing account of the years-long campaign of White Christian nationalism that led to January 6. How did the rise of what Onishi calls the New Religious Right, between 1960 and 2015, give birth to violent White Christian nationalism during the Trump presidency and beyond? What propelled some of the most conservative religious communities in the country—communities of which Onishi was once a part—to ignite a cold civil war?

Through chapters on White supremacy and segregationist theologies, conspiracy theories, the Christian-school movement, purity culture, and the right-wing media ecosystem, Onishi pulls back the curtain on a subculture that birthed a movement and has taken a dangerous turn.
