Sinopsis

"Myths in Museums" explores how museums, intended to be bastions of truth, can inadvertently perpetuate misleading narratives in History and Art. The book examines the complex reasons behind these misrepresentations, from institutional biases to the pressure to create engaging exhibits. Museums play a significant role in shaping our understanding of the world, and this book argues that they must critically examine their own biases to ensure accurate and inclusive representations.

Did you know that historical events are sometimes selectively presented to align with nationalistic agendas? Or that stereotypes can be perpetuated through the problematic display of cultural artifacts? The book approaches this topic through case studies spanning centuries and continents, analyzing the evolution of museum practices. It delves into how museums have misrepresented colonial history, displayed indigenous artifacts problematically, and sensationalized scientific discoveries.

Structured methodically, "Myths in Museums" begins by establishing a theoretical framework, then moves into specific examples, and culminates with practical guidelines for creating more inclusive and accurate exhibits. The book highlights the importance of cultural sensitivity and scientific integrity in museum narratives.

In late December 1776, the American War of Independence appeared to be on its last legs. General George Washington's continental forces had been reduced to a shadow of their former strength, and the British Army had chased them across the Delaware River into Pennsylvania. Desperate times call for desperate measures, however, and George Washington responded to this crisis with astonishing audacity. On Christmas night 1776, he recrossed the Delaware as a nor'easter churned up the coast, burying his small detachment under howling sheets of snow and ice. Undaunted, they attacked a Hessian brigade at Trenton, New Jersey, taking the German auxiliaries by complete surprise. Then, only three days later, Washington struck again, crossing the Delaware, slipping away from the British at Trenton, and attacking the Redcoats at Princeton.

The British, now back on their heels, retreated toward New Brunswick as Washington's reinvigorated force followed them north into Jersey. Over the next eight months, Washington's continentals and the state militias of New Jersey would go head-to-head with the British in a multitude of battles, eventually forcing the British to flee New Jersey by sea. In this captivating narrative of the American War of Independence, Jim Stempel brings to life one of the most violent, courageous, yet virtually forgotten periods of the Revolutionary War.

The foundation of Roman society was built upon a complex hierarchy that influenced daily life, social interactions, and political structures. At its core, the Roman family served as the most fundamental unit, shaping personal identity, social standing, and economic stability. The paterfamilias, or male head of the household, wielded significant authority over his family, including his wife, children, and even enslaved individuals. Roman families emphasized duty, tradition, and respect for elders, with ancestral lineage playing a crucial role in societal reputation. Women, while largely confined to domestic roles, could exert influence within the household and, in some cases, in business affairs. Marriage alliances were also instrumental in forging political and social ties, reinforcing the interconnected nature of Roman society.
Beyond the family, Roman society was stratified into distinct classes, each with its own privileges and restrictions. At the top were the patricians, an elite group of aristocratic families who traditionally held political power. Their wealth and influence allowed them to dominate the Senate and other governing bodies. Below them were the plebeians, a broad class of commoners that included farmers, artisans, and merchants. Although they had fewer political rights in the early Republic, the plebeians gradually gained influence through social and political struggles, such as the Conflict of the Orders. The lowest tier of society consisted of enslaved individuals and freedmen. Slaves were often prisoners of war or those born into servitude, playing essential roles in both households and large-scale economic activities. Freedmen, formerly enslaved individuals who had gained their freedom, occupied an intermediate status, often working as skilled laborers or entrepreneurs while still facing social limitations.

‘Grimly fascinating … engrossing’ Daily Mail
NINE HISTORIC CRIMES. ONE FAMILIAR OBSESSION.
In early modern England, murder truly was most foul. Trials were gossipy events packed to the rafters with noisome spectators. Executions were public proceedings which promised not only gore, but desperate confessions and the grandest, most righteous human drama. Bookshops saw grisly stories of crime and death sell like hot cakes.
This history unfolds the true stories of murder, criminal investigation, early forensic techniques, high court trials and so much more.
In thrilling narrative, we follow a fugitive killer through the streets of London, citizen detectives clamouring to help officials close the net. We untangle the mystery of a suspected staged suicide through the newly emerging science of forensic pathology. We see a mother trying to clear her dead daughter’s name while other women faced the accusations – sometimes true and sometimes not – of murdering their own children.
These stories are pieced together from original research using coroner’s inquests, court records, parish archives, letters, diaries and the cheap street pamphlets that proliferated to satisfy a voracious public.
These intensely personal stories portray the lives of real people as they confronted the extraordinary crises of murder, infanticide, miscarriage and suicide. Many historical laws and attitudes concerning death and murder may strike us as exceptionally cruel, and yet many still remind us that some things never change: we are still fascinated by narratives of murder and true crime, murder trials today continue to be grand public spectacles, female killers are frequently cast as aberrant objects of public hatred and sexual desire, and suicide remains a sin within many religious organisations and was a crime in England until the 1960s.
Great and Horrible News! explores the strange history of death and murder in early modern England, yet the stories within may appear shockingly familiar.
Great and Horrible News by Blessin Adams is a riveting biography of the most notorious criminals of the Stuart and Elizabethan eras. This latest bestseller offers a new perspective on the period from 1485-1603, making it a top choice for those interested in European history.
For fans of Michelle Morgan (The Book of Hope), Kate Summerscale (The Peepshow), Tom Holland (The Rest is History), David Wilson (A History Of British Serial Killing), and Christopher Clark (Kaiser Wilhelm II).
