Sinopse

Birth Through Ages offers a comprehensive exploration of childbirth history, revealing how cultural beliefs and medical advancements have shaped the birthing experience. From ancient birth rituals overseen by midwives to modern hospital births, the book examines diverse childbirth practices across time and cultures. It highlights how, for example, the transition from communal birthing practices to more individualized approaches reflects evolving societal values.

The book progresses chronologically, starting with ancient practices and moving through the medieval and early modern periods, charting the rise of medical intervention and obstetrical techniques. It analyzes the modern era, focusing on hospital births and pain management, while also exploring how cultural and social contexts influence maternal care.

Birth Through Ages emphasizes that childbirth is not solely a medical procedure, but is deeply embedded in cultural contexts. The book's value lies in its interdisciplinary approach, connecting women's history, medical history, and cultural studies to provide a holistic view. By synthesizing historical medical texts and anthropological studies, the book illustrates the interplay between tradition and progress. Readers will gain insights into the historical roots of contemporary maternal care debates and the importance of culturally sensitive approaches, offering a broader appreciation for the complexities of the birth experience.

Australia's leading social psychologist examines our society today and asks timely and urgent questions about its future

Life is messy. Relationships are complex. Outcomes are uncertain. Yet none of our differences-whether based on ethnicity, politics, religion, cultural tastes and preferences, or gender-are nearly as significant as the humanity we share.

Amidst our epidemics of loneliness, anxiety and depression, and the impacts of entrenched poverty and ubiquitous technology, The Way We Are examines the major trends that are shaking the foundations of the Australian way of life.

Drawing on thousands of interviews over a lifetime of research, Hugh Mackay, much loved and highly respected social psychologist, presents a compelling portrait of Australia today. He celebrates the march towards gender equality and explains the stubborn persistence of misogyny, the anti-social consequences of social media, the complex legacy of the Baby Boomers, and the 'fake wisdom' that guides too much of our thinking. Exploring the steady decline in religious faith and practice, Hugh identifies the many gods we continue to worship, and points to the positive role that dreaming can play in our lives. Though some of his observations may not be easy reading, Hugh's analysis is suffused with affection for our country.

Inspiring, provocative and powerfully argued, The Way We Are is the most important-and uplifting-book you'll read all year. It will encourage you to reflect deeply on the question: What kind of society do we want to become?

'Hugh Mackay is one of this country's most perceptive social commentators.' - Sydney Morning Herald

An award-winning conflict consultant offers a new path to take when agreement and collaboration seem impossible, and teaches us that when conflict resolution fails, we can achieve freedom instead—even without others’ cooperation.
A founding CEO and his top salesperson are engaged in a heated clash over her compensation package.
A mother and daughter are locked in a nasty cycle of blame and attack.
A high-profile executive team is struggling with aggressive political infighting.
In all these cases, every effort to talk it out has been unsuccessful.
Where can you turn when your attempts to resolve conflict fail? Most approaches emphasize collaboration. You are supposed to sit down, calmly talk through your differences, and find a solution. But what if nothing seems to work, no matter what you do?
When situations resist resolution, the Optimal Outcomes Method teaches us conflict freedom.
This innovative method, based on Dr. Jennifer Goldman-Wetzler’s training at the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School, two decades as a consultant to Fortune 500 and high-growth CEOs and senior teams, grassroots work with Middle East leaders, US government-funded research on terrorism, and her popular course at Columbia University, Optimal Outcomes reveals eight groundbreaking practices proven to help people everywhere free themselves from conflict.
With inspiring stories from clients, students, and Dr. Goldman-Wetzler’s own life lighting the way, you’ll learn to observe complex situations with clarity, access your shadow values (things you really care about but have been unwilling to admit), and take bold, simple, surprising action.
Optimal Outcomes blends mindfulness, Jungian psychology, and practical, step-by-step advice to free anyone from seemingly impossible conflict. Applying the practices, you’ll reach your Optimal Outcome—which may be vastly different from what you originally imagined, but more satisfying than you ever dreamed possible.
Supplemental enhancement PDF accompanies the audiobook.

Nor Fish Nor Fowl: From Deckhand...

In 1934, after five years travelling the world as a Merchant Seaman, my father, aged 21, enlisted in the British Royal Air Force to escape the Depression. Entering the Marine Branch, he swapped big ships for small fast boats - Seaplane Tenders, Armoured Target Boats and High Speed Launches.
In 1940, when the Air Sea Rescue service was formed, he joined the crew of High Speed Launch 102 (now fully restored and based at Portsmouth) as a Coxswain, stationed at Blyth. Three busy years on the "Spitfires of the Sea" followed, before his leg was "smashed" in heavy seas.
On recovery, he spent time in the Faroe Islands and in the English Channel, after "D-Day", and before being commissioned. The war's end found him in West Africa. After VJ Day he was demobbed, then recalled and posted to Egypt.
After a brief unhappy spell in "Civvy Street", he re-enlisted in the RAF as an acting corporal. First on the scene when HSL 2555 blew up, he was commended and subsequently carried the RAF ensign at the 1950 Battle of Britain celebrations in Paris, France. On return to the UK he was once again commissioned.
In Malta, during the Suez Crisis, he supervised a flying boat airlift of families and service personnel through Malta as the Canal Zone was evacuated. Later, serving in Cold War Germany, he skippered German boats with mixed German/British crews and was present when the Unit was handed back to the Germans.
In 1961, aged just 48, injuries forced his retirement from the RAF.
Now, fittingly narrated by my actor daughter, this book reveals a great deal of the little known story of the RAF Marine Branch, its boats and the life of a British serviceman's family in war and peace.

Home Is the Road - Wandering the...

From the award-winning Native American literary writer Diane Glancy comes a book about travel, belonging, and home. Travel is not merely a means to bring us from one location to another. "My sense of place is in the moving," Glancy writes. For her the road is home—its own satisfying destination. But the road also makes demands on us: asking us to be willing to explore the incomprehensible parts of the landscapes we inhabit and pass through—as well as to, ultimately, let them blur as they go by. This, Glancy says, is home.

Glancy teases out the lessons of the road that are never easy to define, grappling with her own: childhood's puzzle pieces of her Cherokee heritage and a fraught but still compelling vision of Christianity. As she clocks an inordinate amount of driving, as she experiments with literary forms, she looks to what the land has held for centuries, before the roads were ever there.

This, ultimately, is a book about land, tradition, religion, questions, and the puzzle pieces none of us can put together quite right. It's a book about peripheral vision, conflicting narratives, and a longing for travel.
