Sinopsis

In "Brief Reflections relative to the Emigrant French Clergy," Fanny Burney presents a poignant examination of the plight faced by the French clergy during the tumultuous period of the French Revolution. Written in a reflective and incisive prose style, the work captures the emotional and sociopolitical upheaval the émigrés encountered. Burney's keen observations also delve into the broader implications of exile, religious identity, and national loyalty, rendering the text a vital document within the context of late 18th-century literary and historical discourse. Fanny Burney, an acclaimed novelist and playwright, was profoundly influenced by her own experiences and those of her contemporaries during this era of radical change. Known for her insightful characterizations and societal critiques, Burney's interaction with the French clergy's tragic circumstances reflects her commitment to social justice and human empathy. This work is informed by her own connections with expatriates, illuminating her sensitivity to their struggles and the moral dilemmas posed by displacement and cultural dislocation. "Brief Reflections relative to the Emigrant French Clergy" is an essential read for those interested in the intersections of literature, history, and theology. Burney's eloquence and depth encourage readers to grapple with the ethical complexities of exile while fostering a broader understanding of the French Revolution's impact on individuals and communities. For many years the victim of smear campaigns by notable male writers, and dismissed as being merely 'the mother of Mary Shelley', Mary Wollstonecraft has claimed her rightful title as one of the founders of feminist thought, a movement anchored in her Vindications.
Outraged by Edmund Burke's Reflections on the Revolution in France, its use of gendered language and defence of monarchy and hereditary privilege, A Vindication of the Rights of Men turned the tables on philosophy. A Vindication of the Rights of Woman swiftly followed, taking the conversation further, and arguing the case for women's education. Together, these two seminal works went on to change the course of history, and her arguments continue to hold water today.
This edition contains explanatory notes and an introduction by Bee Rowlatt, Chair of the Wollstonecraft Society.

“You have taken our civil rights—we want our human rights.”

On April 14, 1971, a handful of prisoners attacked the guards at Kingston Penitentiary and seized control, making headlines around the world. For four intense days, the prisoners held the guards hostage while their leaders negotiated with a citizens’ committee of journalists and lawyers, drawing attention to the dehumanizing realities of their incarceration, including overcrowding, harsh punishment and extreme isolation. But when another group of convicts turned their pent-up rage towards some of the weakest prisoners, tensions inside the old stone walls erupted, with tragic consequences. As heavily armed soldiers prepared to regain control of the prison through a full military assault, the inmates were finally forced to surrender.

Murder on the Inside tells the harrowing story of a prison in crisis against the backdrop of a pivotal moment in the history of human rights. Occurring just months before the uprising at Attica Prison, the Kingston riot has remained largely undocumented, and few have known the details—yet the tense drama chronicled here is more relevant today than ever. A gripping account of the standoff and the efforts for justice and reform it inspired, Murder on the Inside is essential reading for our times.
