Sinopse

In the magic of a late nineteenth century London, murders, prostitution, intrigue, alliances, revenge and love come to life in the neighborhood of Whitechapel. A setting that brings the reader at night in the muddy streets, in the bad places, between gaming tables. A story made up of ambitious, astute and proud people willing to do anything to get their own redemption from life.Whitechapel is a mysterious and complex place, a foggy neighborhood whose alleys, at night, seem to be crossed only by the icy air of late nineteenth century London. Yet in those streets move monsters. The anguished series of brutal murders committed by the serial killer Jack the Ripper, acts as a backdrop to the bellicose and cruel events of the protagonists of the story. Everything revolves around a house of appointments and it's business. Violent and unscrupulous characters are competing for power and money between a cigar and a gambling poker establishing dark alliances and bloody feuds. Among them there's Miriam, a daring and reckless prostitute forced to reckon with the fear for the ruthless serial killer, but also and above all with the fierce array of exploitative misogynists and rogue men with whom she interacts, often emulating the methods. In this succession and overlapping of murky plots there is also space for love. A concrete, passionate, carnal love, which, however, can also allow itself rare moments of kindness, rapture and ecstasy. The language and the dialogues give strength to the rapid and pressing rhythm of the story, which captivates the reader and catapults him into a surprising and disturbing ending, so much so as that it seems almost surreal.PUBLISHER: TEKTIME

African American literature is the body of literature produced in the United States by writers of African descent. It begins with the works of such late 18th-century writers as Phillis Wheatley. Before the high point of enslaved people narratives, African-American literature was dominated by autobiographical spiritual narratives. The genre known as slave narratives in the 19th century were accounts by people who had generally escaped from slavery, about their journeys to freedom and ways they claimed their lives. The Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s was a great period of flowering in literature and the arts, influenced both by writers who came North in the Great Migration and those who were immigrants from Jamaica and other Caribbean islands.

"All the world’s a stage"—but are the men and women merely players, or actors in a heavenly drama? In God on Stage, renowned author and professor Peter Kreeft explores fifteen great dramas, and within them, five great themes: life, death, suffering, religion, and damnation. From classics like Oedipus the King and Hamlet to modern plays like Robert Bolt’s A Man for All Seasons and Cormac McCarthy’s The Sunset Limited, Kreeft draws vivid lessons on the big questions we all ask ourselves. Like the plays it takes up, God on Stage invites readers to smile and frown, ponder and fall in love, and sit back in awe and wonder—at art, God, and the art of God that is man.

Víctor Terán has been described as the most 'personal' poet of the Zapotec Isthmus of Oaxaca, Mexico. His poems, highly lyrical and imagistic, explore two deep passions: the electricity that passes between bodies in love, and Terán's fierce devotion to the Indigenous land and language of his birth. This carefully curated selection of poems, drawing from the whole of Terán's poetic oeuvre, is translated into English by his long-time translator and interlocutor, the poet Shook, working from Spanish bridge-translations made by the author.
The Poetry Translation Centre's World Poet Series showcases the most exciting living poets from Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America.
"These are stunning, halting, lilting poems of flesh and flower, of boulder and bone. Vivid and meditative, I hummed among their hills, they hummed in mine." - Inua Ellams
"These beautiful, subtle, sumptuous translations set alongside the original work make for a feast for the ears and the eyes alike." - Adam O'Riordan
"In Víctor Terán's poetry, the elements of nature are sentient, almost mischievous, and share blood ties with the people of Juchitán, the poet's birthplace and the father of the hurricane wind, the mother of the sun. The north wind raises its whip, trees laugh, the day gets fed up, the afternoon eats its meal, the clamour of winged ants announce the rains, the world opens up her thighs, while a white flower spurns no one. And within this universe, poems of love and resistance share in the ritual and celebrations, suffused with light and devotion: 'the lit tulip of your lips'; 'breath of god, / breath that lights and snuffs out / the candle flame / that is life.' In Shook's luminous translations, the emotions of longing open up their eyes in the night, alive and breathing as the moon: 'Delirious moon, like a colander / that dreams of overflowing with water.'" - Juana Adcock

    William Bernhardt

In his latest collection, William Bernhardt again demonstrates that he is a true poet, one whose work accomplishes the difficult task of being both accessible and profound. He communicates with grace and illumination, avoiding the obscurity and obfuscation that sometimes causes readers to avoid modern poetry. He writes about the subjects that matter most: personal relationships, family, children, and the challenges of everyday life. Bernhardt is a poet who appeals even to those who think they don't like poetry and is cherished by those who do.
While addressing subjects of everlasting import, Bernhardt's poems are engaging, relevant, and sometimes playful, reminiscent of beloved predecessors such as Billy Collins and Robert Frost. Readers will be struck by the versatility of the poems and the wide range of form. Smart, lyrical, observant, and textured, these poems explain why Rilla Askew (Kind of Kin) called Bernhardt "a compelling new voice in American poetry" and R.C. Davis-Undiamo (World Literature Today) named him one of "the nation's literary treasures."
"William Bernhardt writes with warmth, wit, and a clear desire to commune with his reader. Whether he is working in free verse or in meter and rhyme, Bernhardt makes of poetry a way of connecting person to person. Like Montaigne, Bernhardt is a man consubstantial with his book, and the full range of human feeling is on display in these poems with great honesty and ardent empathy." —Benjamin Meyers, OK Poet Laureate, Crouch-Mathis Professor of Literature, OBU
