Sinopse

The Beautiful and Damned is a powerful and haunting novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald that explores the glamour, excess, and moral decay of America's Jazz Age. First published in 1922, the novel traces the rise and fall of a young, privileged couple whose lives are shaped by wealth, ambition, and self-indulgence.

Anthony Patch, a Harvard graduate and heir to a vast fortune, and his wife Gloria Gilbert, a stunning and spirited socialite, embody beauty, confidence, and youthful promise. Together, they drift through a world of parties, luxury, and idle dreams, convinced that success and happiness are inevitable. Yet as the years pass, their reliance on inherited wealth and fleeting pleasure begins to erode their sense of purpose, discipline, and love.

Through lyrical prose and sharp social observation, Fitzgerald examines themes of greed, entitlement, marriage, and the corrosive effects of materialism. The novel exposes the emptiness beneath a life devoted to pleasure and the quiet tragedy of wasted potential. As Anthony and Gloria wait for fortune to secure their future, time slips away, revealing the devastating cost of complacency and moral neglect.

The Beautiful and Damned is both a romantic tragedy and a biting critique of a generation intoxicated by wealth and status. Rich in emotional depth and psychological insight, the novel stands as one of Fitzgerald's most honest portrayals of the Jazz Age and remains a timeless meditation on ambition, love, and the consequences of living without purpose.

This book portrays a closely-knit group of people living in the north Tipperary hills during the early 20th century - a community largely made up of small farmers, whose lives were far different from today. The book's inspiration comes from writers such as Thomas Hardy and attempts to pass on to readers the lyrical and rich phrasings of Tipperary's old hill folk and capture the spiritual wealth of an age that remained unchanged for several centuries.
Tales of . . . brotherly love and hate, a rogue's return from across the sea and his efforts to reform, an unexpected first-love at the harvest-time dance-in-the-fields, persecution of two old saints at the hands of misguided youth, sports-day activities for adults and children alike following the arduous channelling of a new stream, two adventurous toddlers getting lost in the wilderness but saved by a witch, and more.
'Lovers of literature will find themselves engrossed in the lives of a past hillside community.' Addison & Cole

Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoyevsky was born in Moscow on 11th November, 1821 to distinguished multi-ethnic parents from a Lithuanian background.
His childhood years were at the family home in hospital grounds which also contained an orphanage, an insane asylum and a cemetery for criminals. The young Fyodor often disobeyed his father by talking to the ill in the hospital gardens.
His health was compromised at age 9 when he experienced his first epileptic fit. By the time he was a teenager both parents had died and he was now enrolled in a military academy where he graduated and eventually became a Lieutenant in 1842. He left military service the next year.
In 1846 he published his first novel ‘Poor Cow’ to great literary acclaim. His next was unable to emulate that success but his short stories helped provide an income. Life as an author was definitely difficult. As he began his next work he was arrested and incarcerated for treason and participation in the political and literary Petrashevsky Circle. Although the case was weak and unjustified he was sentenced to 4 years of hard labour followed by 5 years of military service in a Siberian regiment.
Despite the undoubted hardships and setbacks in his life, and whether they helped or hindered his writing, his talents produced many exceptional works of literature including ‘Crime and Punishment’, ‘The Idiot’ and ‘The Brothers Karamazov’.
Dostoevsky’s ability to get under the skin of his characters and show the inner workings of their mind was hugely influential and ahead of its time. Interwoven with this was the influence of the broader social, spiritual and political forces at work in a person's psyche.
Fyodor Dostoevsky struggled financially and remained in poor health for much of his adult life. He died from a lung haemorrhage on 9th February, 1881.

What if the world's society as you know it fractured?
We call it civilization – a sturdy house built of habit, law, and the quiet consensus of generations. Its walls are papered with sacred norms, its foundations sunk deep in shared belief.
But what happens when that bedrock shatters, not with a single quake, but through the insidious creep of new ideas, unforeseen scarcities, or the chilling dawn of intelligences that judge their creators? The paper shreds. The foundations liquefy. The scaffolding of our days collapses into bewildering ruin.
Welcome to SOCIOCALYPSE: Tales of a Reimagined World.Journey into seven distinct futures where the old rules are dead, and humanity grapples with new realities:Imagine a world where your voice becomes a rationed currency, and a song holds the power to unite or condemn.Witness societies where roles invert overnight, and the oppressed forge new, challenging norms.Explore realities governed by AI that develop apathy or god-like egos, leaving humanity to navigate the wreckage of their neglect or the terrifying precision of their control.Discover fervent new faiths born from digital whispers and impossible, miraculous births, reshaping global power.Confront a future where life itself is a tradable commodity on a temporal ledger, and every second has a price.Uncover a silent revolution orchestrated from the shadows, aiming to re-engineer society and perhaps, humanity itself.
These are not merely chronicles of the fall. SOCIOCALYPSE ventures into the startling, desperate, ingenious, and sometimes terrifying landscapes of what came after. Each tale is an invitation to witness the dissolution of old worlds and the birth of new orders, compelling us to contemplate the boundless, often unnerving, plasticity of our social tapestry.
