Sinopse

F. Scott Fitzgerald’s short stories are a window into the Jazz Age—a time of dazzling excess, ambition, and longing. While he is best known for The Great Gatsby, his short fiction reveals the full depth of his talent, capturing the fragile beauty of youth, the illusions of wealth, and the quiet tragedies beneath the glamour. The Short Fiction of F. Scott Fitzgerald presents a masterful selection of his finest stories, each brimming with wit, lyrical prose, and an unflinching look at human nature.     This collection includes The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, the unforgettable tale of a man who ages in reverse, and The Diamond as Big as the Ritz, a biting satire of untold wealth and its hidden costs. In Bernice Bobs Her Hair and The Ice Palace, Fitzgerald explores the shifting social landscape of the 1920s, while Winter Dreams foreshadows the themes of lost love and disillusionment that would later define The Great Gatsby. The piercing psychological depth of Absolution and The Rich Boy offers a stark contrast to the lighthearted charm of The Camel’s Back and Porcelain and Pink, showcasing Fitzgerald’s versatility as a storyteller.     Beyond these well-known classics, the collection also features hidden gems such as May Day, a powerful portrait of postwar alienation, and The Lees of Happiness, a heartbreaking meditation on fate and endurance. The romantic allure of Love in the Night and Jacob’s Ladder is balanced by the sharp humor of He Thinks He’s Wonderful and The Freshest Boy, proving Fitzgerald’s ability to capture both the idealism and cynicism of his era. Every story in this volume offers a glimpse into the struggles of characters chasing dreams that always seem just out of reach.     The Short Fiction of F. Scott Fitzgerald is a testament to one of America’s greatest literary voices. Whether set in glittering ballrooms or quiet corners of disappointment, Fitzgerald’s stories are filled with timeless beauty and insight. This Classicus edition is an essential addition to the library of any reader who cherishes elegant prose, compelling storytelling, and an unfiltered look at the triumphs and failures of the human heart.

‘When I joined the struggle as a 13-year-old boy in Soweto, I would never have imagined that one day I would blow the whistle on a special kind of corruption that was destroying the party and the values I had been fighting for all my life.’
In 2010, government spokesperson Themba Maseko was called to the Gupta family’s Saxonwold compound and asked by Ajay Gupta to divert the government’s entire advertising budget to the family’s media company. When Maseko refused to do so, he was removed from his position and forced to leave the public service. The life of this once-proud civil servant would never be the same again.
Maseko, whose activism was forged in the Soweto uprising of 1976, is a product of the struggle, and has always been unfailingly loyal to the principles of the ANC. In 2016, when the party called on members with evidence of wrongdoing by the Guptas to step forward, Maseko was the only one to do so. For this courageous act of whistleblowing, he was ostracised, slandered and even threatened.
As a former senior state official, Maseko also offers a rare insider’s view of the presidencies of Thabo Mbeki and Jacob Zuma and of the inner workings of government.
Compelling and revelatory, For My Country shows what it takes to stand up for one’s principles and defy the most powerful man in the country.

The first full reappraisal of one of Britain's great fighter aces, this book examines the truth behind Tuck's 1956 biography, Fly for Your Life. It looks at the evidence behind the myths, checks out some of the exaggerated stories and reveals the real Stanford Tuck. In January 1942 Bob Tuck was the top-scoring British fighter ace with an official score of twenty-nine enemy aircraft destroyed. During the Battle of Britain his legendary prowess grew and he was posted to command a leaderless and demoralized squadron, this time flying Hurricanes. He continued to prove he was an outstanding fighter ace, gaining the rare distinction of three DFCs and then the DSO for his leadership. He was shot down over France in January 1942. In January 1944 however, around twenty POWs, including Tuck, were purged to a new camp. Still determined to escape, Tuck and a Polish officer took a risky chance and made their way east to Russian forces and thence to England. This book reveals a more complex man than the one-dimensional hero of the previous biography. Post war, he became good friends with the Luftwaffe ace, Adolf Galland, and was a key advisor with him on the film Battle of Britain, and, often made many media appearances. His health suffered in later years from the impact of his war service and his imprisonment and he died aged seventy in 1987.

For Pamela Wick, President and Mrs. Reagan were simply Ronnie and Nancy, her parents' best friends. What began with Pamela's mom and Nancy organizing the chili booth at their kids' school fair in Los Angeles soon propelled Pamela's parents into pivotal roles that would help Reagan secure the California governorship and eventually the grand prize: the White House.

Determined to win her parents' approval as the perfect daughter, Pamela marries the son of Republican royalty and joins them in DC to begin her fairytale in the nation's Capitol—or so she thought. What follows is her firsthand look behind the scenes at the gilded age of the Reagan years in Washington, DC—an era now long gone. Sometimes hilarious, sometimes heartbreaking, but always insightful, the narrative chronicles her journey to penetrate Washington society at the highest levels—from Christmas Eve at her family home with President Reagan dressed as Santa Claus, to intimate dinners at the White House. But behind the golden gates, Pam's marriage is unraveling, and her father's high-profile political scandal threatens to destroy their carefully constructed life. Soon, she's trading in glitzy state dinners for congressional hearings attacking her father, and at the center of the Reagan revolution, Pam's own personal uprising begins.

It was totally dark. The lights in the city were turned off, and there were no street lamps, no neon signs, and no extra glow in shop windows. Klaus noticed that theirs was the only car on the road. How would they slip by the checkpoint? Klaus glanced at his wife Tina, whose eyes were shut in prayer. Suddenly he heard a thunderous crash, then saw a bright flash of light. Klaus-Dieter John (1960-) dreamed of becoming a medical missionary in the developing world. He would do whatever it took -- study in top universities and practice surgery in remote and dangerous places -- to reach his goal of providing health care for people who needed it most. Dr. John's seemingly impossible vision of Diospi-Suyana, a world-class hospital for impoverished Peruvians deep in the Andes Mountains, was blessed by God to the end. Despite challenges in fund-raising, construction, moving his family from Germany, and countless roadblocks, Klaus's dream was finally realized, bringing hope in a land loved by God.

How to Begin When Your World Is...

    Molly Phinney Baskette

As a progressive parish minister, Molly Baskette has been a companion during the most vulnerable and unsettled periods of many people's lives. She has also had a front row seat to remarkable human transformation, as many of the ruptures her people lived through turned out to be the way that God got in. But when she was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer at age thirty-nine, with two small children, her theology of and relationship to God was tested more profoundly than ever.

Instead of becoming despondent, though, she engaged with her faith more deeply—seizing the opportunity to test the seaworthiness of the faith she had been practicing and preaching. In How to Begin When Your World Is Ending, Baskette shares the questions that confronted her along the way like: Is it true that prayer changes things? Does God care whether we live or die—and is there a damn thing God can do about it anyway? How can vulnerability, counterintuitively, be a strength? And the million-dollar question: is there life after death, and just what might it be like?

Weaving together her own story and the stories of those she encountered in her life of faith, Baskette mines joy from all the hardest parts of being human. In doing so she reminds us that whatever you are going through, someone has been there before you, and found meaning in the madness.
