Sinopse

In "Mohammed," Roy F. Dibble presents a meticulously researched and compelling exploration of the life of the Islamic prophet, framed within the intricate socio-political landscape of 7th-century Arabia. Dibble employs a narrative style that seamlessly intertwines scholarly analysis with accessible prose, making this work suitable for both academic audiences and general readers. The book delves into the cultural and religious contexts that shaped Mohammed's teachings, examining the profound impact of his message on the formation of Islamic civilization and its continuing relevance today. Dibble, a noted scholar of religious studies, has dedicated much of his career to the examination of the interplay between faith and history. His extensive background in Middle Eastern cultures and languages, combined with rigorous textual analysis of early Islamic sources, informs every aspect of this book. This dedication reveals his respect for the subject matter, allowing him to present a nuanced portrayal of Mohammed that challenges simplistic interpretations and invites deeper understanding. I highly recommend "Mohammed" to anyone seeking an informed and thought-provoking account of one of history's most influential figures. Dibble's balanced approach not only elevates our comprehension of the prophet's legacy but also encourages a broader appreciation of the complexities within Islamic theology and history.

The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass was written in 1845, seven years after Douglass escaped slavery, and is the first of three autobiographies. It covers his life as a slave, enduring the whips of the overseers and the hopelessness of his circumstances, until his escape to the north and arrival at New Bedford, Massachusetts. The brutalities he witnessed and his slowly growing desire for freedom are presented in the vivid language he was already known for in his antislavery oration. The eloquence of Douglass's speeches caused some skeptics to doubt his credibility, believing that a former slave with no education could never speak so well. Thus, part of his motivation for writing the book was to dispel this suspicion and to provide a fuller history than was possible in his lectures. The abolitionists William Lloyd Garrison and Wendell Phillips provided introductions vouching for the truth of Douglass's words. The book was an immediate best seller. The fame brought danger to Douglass, who sailed for England shortly after the book's publication to ensure he would not be apprehended as a fugitive slave. He spent two years touring and lecturing in Great Britain and Ireland before returning to America to continue his abolitionist work. English supporters raised funds to purchase his freedom from his former master. The slave narrative is an autobiographical genre written by escaped slaves concerning their lives in bondage. Slave narratives not only promoted abolitionism by giving first hand evidence of the cruelty and hypocrisy of slaveholders, but also allowed African Americans to express themselves as intelligent, articulate individuals, deserving of respect and freedom. Douglass's Narrative is perhaps the most important example of the genre, on the basis of its literary merits and its impact on the abolitionist movement.

What happens when spiritual surrender becomes self-abandonment—and a woman must learn to trust herself again?
After divorce and profound loss, successful entrepreneur Alicia M. Rodriguez accepts an invitation to Ecuador, altering the course of her life. There she enters the mysterious world of shamanic tradition—and falls in love with Napo, a charismatic and powerful shaman.
What begins as a journey of spiritual awakening becomes an extraordinary eight-year relationship. Alicia leaves behind the life she built in the United States, immersing herself in the landscapes and traditions of Ecuador, and dreaming of creating a healing center with the man she loves.
As love, spirituality, power, and dependence become increasingly entangled, Alicia confronts a more difficult initiation: recognizing the ways she has abandoned her own knowing and finding the courage to reclaim it. Her eventual departure from Ecuador takes her across another ocean to Portugal—but leaving is only the beginning. The deeper journey is learning to trust herself again.
The Shaman's Wife is an award-winning memoir about spiritual longing, love, intuition, identity, and the shadow side of surrender. Both mystical and unflinchingly human, it explores the subtle ways women give away their authority—and what becomes possible when they take it back.

As a young child Diana Wichtel lives in Vancouver, Canada. Her mother is a Catholic New Zealander, her father a Polish Jew who miraculously survived the Holocaust by jumping through the window of a train bound for the Treblinka death camp. When Diana' s thirteen, her life changes dramatically: her mother whisks her and her two siblings to New Zealand to live. Their father is to follow. She never sees him again. Many years later she sets out to discover what happened to him. The search becomes an obsession as she painstakingly uncovers information about his large Warsaw family and their fate at the hands of the Nazis, scours archives across the world for clues to her father' s disappearance, and visits the places he lived. This unforgettable narrative is also a deep reflection on the meaning of family, the trauma of loss, and the insistence of memory. It asks the question: Is it better to know, or more bearable not to?

When Anna Wickins began counselling with her therapist, Paddy Magrane, she could barely speak in their sessions, silenced by traumatic memories from two decades before. But as trust built, Anna felt able to open up and she started to talk about the terrifying ordeal she experienced at university. As Anna examined her past, a transformation was occurring across the room. Listening to her tale awakened painful memories in Paddy about the horrors that occurred at his boarding school.
After two years of healing work, Anna and Paddy embarked on an unusual therapeutic exercise: a visit to the site of her trauma, where Anna physically confronted the scenes of her nightmares. With Paddy's reassurance and support, she was finally able to leave her demons behind. Once robbed of a voice, Anna now helps others to find theirs, in the same way that Paddy helped her.
Told in alternating perspectives, Both Sides of the Couch is a searingly honest account of how counselling shapes both client and therapist. A unique window into therapy, it shows, for the first time, the journey through the eyes of both participants. Both Sides of the Couch is a moving and inspirational story of finding light in the darkest of times.
