Beschreibung

Zoning Rules delves into the powerful, often unseen world of land-use regulations, exploring how these rules shape our cities and influence everything from housing affordability to economic development. Zoning, initially intended to separate factories from residential areas and promote public health, has evolved, sometimes exacerbating inequality. The book argues that zoning policies have unintended consequences impacting social equity and hindering economic progress.

The book examines the history and evolution of zoning, its economic consequences, and the socio-political dynamics that influence zoning decisions. It reveals how zoning can affect land values and business location decisions. By presenting legal documents, economic data, and case studies, the book illustrates the real-world applications and implications of different zoning approaches.

Structured to provide a comprehensive understanding, Zoning Rules begins with the fundamental principles of zoning and its historical development, progresses to its economic effects, and then examines the political and social factors influencing zoning decisions. The book culminates in a discussion of potential reforms promoting more equitable and sustainable urban development. This makes it valuable for anyone interested in understanding and influencing local development.

Elisabeth Elliot wrestled with these difficult questions while watching the steady erosion of her mother's memory - an erosion that seemed to devour every strong and noble attribute that made her mother who she was. This book contains insights Elisabeth gained as she struggled to find perspective.

Frederick Douglass was an American social reformer, abolitionist, orator, writer, and statesman. After escaping from slavery in Maryland, he became a national leader of the abolitionist movement in Massachusetts and New York, becoming famous for his oratory and incisive antislavery writings. Accordingly, he was described by abolitionists in his time as a living counterexample to slaveholders' arguments that slaves lacked the intellectual capacity to function as independent American citizens. Northerners at the time found it hard to believe that such a great orator had once been a slave. It was in response to this disbelief that Douglass wrote his first autobiography.

Following the Civil War, Douglass was an active campaigner for the rights of freed slaves . Douglass also actively supported women's suffrage, and he held several public offices. Without his permission, Douglass became the first African American nominated for vice president of the United States, as the running mate of Victoria Woodhull on the Equal Rights Party ticket.

Douglass believed in dialogue and in making alliances across racial and ideological divides, as well as in the liberal values of the U.S. Constitution. When radical abolitionists, under the motto "No Union with Slaveholders", criticized Douglass's willingness to engage in dialogue with slave owners, he replied: "I would unite with anybody to do right and with nobody to do wrong.

Jnana Yoga, often referred to as the "Path of Knowledge," is one of the four primary paths of yoga in the ancient tradition of Vedanta. The word “Jnana” comes from the Sanskrit root “jñā,” meaning knowledge, and Jnana Yoga is specifically concerned with the cultivation of wisdom and the realization of the ultimate truth of existence. Unlike the more physical paths like Hatha Yoga, Jnana Yoga focuses on intellectual discernment and meditation as tools to break through the illusion of the material world and achieve spiritual enlightenment.
At the heart of Jnana Yoga lies the pursuit of self-inquiry and the question, "Who am I?" This path asserts that ultimate knowledge, or liberation (moksha), can only be attained by understanding the true nature of oneself, and by discerning the difference between the transient, material world (Maya) and the eternal reality (Brahman). Jnana Yoga emphasizes the principle of non-duality, or Advaita, which teaches that the individual self (Atman) is ultimately one with the divine (Brahman). This realization dispels the illusion of separation between the self and the universe.
The path of Jnana Yoga is often described as a mental discipline that requires intense study, reflection, and meditation. It is traditionally taught by a guru, or spiritual teacher, who guides the seeker in their quest for self-knowledge. The guru's role is to help the student distinguish between the real and the unreal, encouraging them to look beyond their attachments, desires, and egos. Scriptures like the Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, and other Vedantic texts are central to Jnana Yoga, providing the philosophical foundation for its practices.

“A magic curtain, woven of legends, hung before the world. Cervantes sent Don Quixote journeying and tore through the curtain. The world opened before the knight-errant in all the comical nakedness of its prose.”
In this thought-provoking, endlessly enlightening, and entertaining essay on the art of the novel, renowned author Milan Kundera suggests that “the curtain” represents a ready-made perception of the world that each of us has—a pre-interpreted world. The job of the novelist, he argues, is to rip through the curtain and reveal what it hides. Here an incomparable literary artist cleverly sketches out his personal view of the history and value of the novel in Western civilization. In doing so, he celebrates a prose form that possesses the unique ability to transcend national and language boundaries in order to reveal some previously unknown aspect of human existence.
