Sinopsis

Indigenous Boat Designs explores the ingenious watercraft developed by indigenous cultures worldwide and how these designs reflect a deep understanding of diverse aquatic environments. These boats weren't just modes of transport; they were crucial for trade, exploration, and cultural exchange, effectively turning waterways into highways.

Some designs showcase remarkable environmental adaptation, such as those in the Amazon basin, tailored for navigating complex river systems, while others, like those in the Arctic, demonstrate resilience in extreme conditions.

The book examines these designs' history, sustainable technology, and cultural significance, detailing construction techniques, materials, and social structures surrounding boat building. It highlights how indigenous communities passed down boat-building knowledge across generations.

By combining engineering insights with cultural narratives, the book demonstrates that these designs are enduring examples of innovation, embodying a sophisticated understanding of hydrodynamics and ecological balance.

The book progresses from introducing the concept to exploring regional examples and analyzing their cultural and economic roles, ultimately discussing their relevance to contemporary boat building.

This book contains three separate books, all related to myths on the North and South American Continents:
Aztec Mythology: The Aztec Empire, one of the most powerful and complex civilizations of Mesoamerica, was not only remarkable for its military conquests and grand architecture but also for its deeply spiritual and mythological worldview. At the heart of Aztec society was a profound belief in the gods and the sacredness of ritual, which governed everything from daily life to the empire's grandest ceremonies. Aztec mythology, rich with gods, cosmic battles, and creation stories, shaped the culture and practices of this ancient civilization. Understanding Aztec mythology is essential to understanding the values, actions, and worldview of the Aztec people, as it provided the framework within which they interpreted their world and their place within it.
Inca Mythology: The Inca Empire, at its zenith, spanned much of South America, including present-day Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, and parts of Chile and Argentina. Known for its advanced architecture, agricultural systems, and administrative organization, the Inca civilization also possessed a deeply spiritual culture. Central to their worldview was a rich tapestry of mythology that explained the creation of the world, the origins of humankind, and the roles of the gods in the natural and spiritual realms.
Maya Mythology: Maya mythology stands as one of the most intricate and profound systems of stories and beliefs in the ancient world, reflecting the depth of a civilization that thrived for thousands of years. These myths, preserved through oral traditions and later written texts such as the Popol Vuh, reveal the Maya’s understanding of the cosmos, their relationship with nature, and their spiritual connection to the divine.

    Risk Makes Sense - Human...

In a world of growing risk aversion, one could be forgiven for thinking that risk doesn’t make sense. Risk elimination thinking and behaviour sets a trajectory for a ‘dumb down’ workplace culture. The more efforts are made to ‘engineer out the idiot’, the more the system creates an unthinking workforce.
A Newsletter in 2011 by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in the UK lists a number of things that have been banned. Dodgem cars, school sack races and kite flying, amongst the activities which have been banned. Some schools have banned kids playing on monkey bars and others have banned leather footballs. A local council has instituted a $1000 penalty for kite flying on council ovals in case somebody might get hit. Even the Royal British Legion had to stop selling poppies with pins on Remembrance Day in case people might prick themselves.
The report above demonstrates just how absurd things have developed in our risk adverse society. The reality is, there is no learning without risk. Risk is not bad. You can’t live life without a ‘trade-off ’ for risk. You can’t learn without risk. We seem more than ever preoccupied with lawsuits than learning, more anxious about injury than adventure and, fearful of harm rather than welcoming creativity. The evolving language of risk elimination and cult-like fixation with everything ‘zero’ is a language that fosters the development of an unthinking workforce. As risk aversion increases, so do the resulting management systems that accompany it. This results in ‘flooding’ the worker so that they default to gut instincts, personal micro-rules and ‘risk quackery’. This increases risk. Rather than resist risk or extinguish risk, we need to embrace it and better understand it from a social-psychological and cultural perspective.
This book advocates a social psychology approach when applied to risk, a new approach to risk that identifies that risk makes sense and is sense-able.
