Sinossi

"Philosophy In Letters" explores how personal letters have significantly shaped intellectual discourse and the evolution of philosophical ideas. It argues that correspondence isn't just a means of communication but a unique space for philosophical exploration, fostering rigorous debate, self-reflection, and collaborative knowledge creation.

Did you know that before widespread publication, letters served as vital platforms for philosophers to share insights and critique each other's work, acting as precursors to academic journals?

The book examines the rhetorical strategies and social dynamics inherent in philosophical exchanges through letters, offering a fresh perspective on intellectual history. The book uniquely examines correspondence as a distinct form of philosophical expression and highlights its dialogical and iterative approach.

Analyzing key philosophical exchanges, particularly among Enlightenment thinkers debating reason and freedom, and existentialists refining their ideas, the book shows how letters enabled a deeper engagement than formal publications.

"Philosophy In Letters" begins by introducing epistolary philosophy and its historical importance, progressing through different periods and culminating in a reflection on contemporary digital communication as a potential avenue for philosophical debate.

What evidence is there that evil entities can possess human beings and force them to commit horrific murders?

Black magic murders, Satanic sex cults and demonic possession are the diabolical practices that grab the tabloid headlines and reinforce the myth that evil and an unhealthy obsession with the occult are to blame for our increasingly violent society. But is the truth even darker and more disturbing?

From tribal magic and shamanism, through the work of WB Yeats and Aleister Crowley, to black magic rituals and New Age Nihilists, The Dark History of the Occult asks whether 'Satanic forces' are simply the emergence of the dark side of human nature, or whether we really have something to fear - namely, evil?

An intimate memoir by blues legend Robert Johnson's stepsister, including new details about his family, music, influences, tragic death, and musical afterlife Though Robert Johnson was only twenty-seven years young and relatively unknown at the time of his tragic death in 1938, his enduring recordings have solidified his status as a progenitor of the Delta blues style. And yet, while his music has retained the steadfast devotion of modern listeners, much remains unknown about the man who penned and played these timeless tunes. Few people alive today actually remember what Johnson was really like, and those who do have largely upheld their silence-until now. In Brother Robert, nonagenarian Annye C. Anderson sheds new light on a real-life figure largely obscured by his own legend: her kind and incredibly talented stepbrother, Robert Johnson. This book chronicles Johnson's unconventional path to stardom, from the harrowing story behind his illegitimate birth, to his first strum of the guitar on Anderson's father's knee, to the genre-defining recordings that would one day secure his legacy. Along the way, readers are gifted not only with Anderson's personal anecdotes, but with colorful recollections passed down to Anderson by members of their family-the people who knew Johnson best. Readers also learn about the contours of his working life in Memphis, never-before-disclosed details about his romantic history, and all of Johnson's favorite things, from foods and entertainers to brands of tobacco and pomade. Together, these stories don't just bring the mythologized Johnson back down to earth; they preserve both his memory and his integrity. For decades, Anderson and her family have ignored the tall tales of Johnson "selling his soul to the devil" and the speculative to fictionalized accounts of his life that passed for biography. Brother Robert is here to set the record straight. Featuring a foreword by Elijah Wald and a Q&A with Anderson, Wald, Preston Lauterbach, and Peter Guralnick, this book paints a vivid portrait of an elusive figure who forever changed the musical landscape as we know it.

Ginger Baker is, without question, the foremost drummer of his generation, having formed supergroups Cream and Blind Faith. In the early 1990s Geoffrey Giuliano received a call from Baker asking if he would be interested in writing his autobiography. From there a turbulent yet fruitful relationship ensued between the two. While the book they wrote has yet to be published, here, at last, are the exclusive, in-depth, upfront, and highly personal conversations the two unlikely friends recorded in a Western New York studio all those years ago. Ginger speaks his mind, holding forth on the particulars of his amazing life and work and in so doing reveals something he has always ardently tried to hide - that he is really a lovely, caring, sensitive man. Joined here by his near lifelong musical partner in Cream, bassist, singer, songwriter Jack Bruce, this is the audiobook for everyone interested in the history, art, and cultural significance of the popular music of the 20th century. Here is a once in a lifetime, must have audio event. Perfect for universities and all educational media. Contains adult language and mature themes. Not recommended for children. Clotilde Augusta Inez Mary Graves was born on the 3rd June 1863 at Buttevant Castle, Co. Cork, to parents with military backgrounds.
At age nine, the family moved to Southsea in England for yet another military posting. Her father’s postings gave her valuable experiences that would be put to good use in later years in some of her literary works.
She was educated at a Catholic convent in Lourdes before returning to London in 1884 to study art in Bloomsbury. She worked part-time at the British Museum and the Royal Female School of Art and generated further income by drawing little pen-and-ink grotesques for the comic papers.
A few years later a chance meeting found her writing extra lyrics for a pantomime version of Puss in Boots. She followed up with several financially successful plays, both in London and New York, and gained a measure of notoriety in one with the comparison of marriage and prostitution.
Despite her dramatic success she published her first novel in 1911 under the pseudonym of Richard Dehan which she continued to use for later works. As well as novels and plays she published collections of short stories which glow with talent and invention.
She was an unusual figure in London society, wearing her hair short, taking on a masculine manner and cut of clothing, and smoking cigarettes in public when such traits were considered eccentric at best. Add to this her admired collection of Chinese and Japanese trophies, her enthusiasm for fly-fishing and her riding of a tricycle and you have a perfect image of this fascinating writer.
Clotilde Graves died at the convent of Our Lady of Lourdes at Hatch End in Middlesex, on the 3rd December 1932. She was 69.
