Sinopsis

Dutch Cycling Culture explores why cycling is so integral to daily life and national identity in the Netherlands. It examines how the Dutch have achieved near-ubiquitous bicycle usage, far beyond just recreation, by focusing on the historical development of cycling infrastructure and its impact on social equity. The book reveals that the Dutch modal transport share differs significantly from other developed nations due to deliberate policy choices that prioritize cycling over car-centric development. The book uniquely intertwines quantitative data with qualitative insights, providing a nuanced understanding of how policy, infrastructure, and culture interact. It progresses from introducing core concepts of urban cycling and sustainable transport to examining specific case studies and cultural narratives. Dutch Cycling Culture demonstrates that the widespread adoption of cycling is not accidental, but rather a result of sustained investment and cultural embrace, making it a valuable resource for those seeking to understand and potentially replicate this model elsewhere.

The mythology of the Incas is a fascinating tapestry of gods, legends, and rituals that shaped the spiritual and cultural identity of one of the most powerful civilizations in the Americas. Unlike written traditions found in other ancient cultures, Incan mythology was passed down orally, with each generation preserving and refining the stories that explained the origins of the world, the forces of nature, and the role of human beings in the cosmos. These myths were deeply intertwined with the daily lives of the Inca people, influencing everything from their agricultural practices to their political structures.

At the heart of Incan mythology was a complex belief system that divided the universe into three realms: Hanan Pacha, the upper world of the gods; Kay Pacha, the earthly realm of humans; and Uku Pacha, the underworld where spirits and ancestors resided. These realms were connected by sacred mountains, rivers, and celestial bodies, all of which were considered divine. The gods of the Incan pantheon, led by Viracocha, the supreme creator, played a central role in shaping the world and maintaining balance within these realms. Inti, the sun god, was revered as the divine ancestor of the ruling class, while Pachamama, the earth goddess, was honored for providing sustenance and fertility.

Rituals and ceremonies were essential to maintaining harmony between the natural and supernatural worlds. The Inca performed elaborate festivals, such as Inti Raymi, the Festival of the Sun, to honor their deities and ensure the continuation of prosperity. Priests and oracles played a crucial role in interpreting the will of the gods, often conducting sacrifices—both animal and human—as acts of devotion and appeasement. Sacred sites, including Coricancha in Cusco and Machu Picchu, served as centers of worship where offerings were made to the gods.

Cycling China in the wrong gear and bound for Thailand
In this, the 2nd Audio book of the Rambling On trilogy, the load gets lighter and the speed slower, but Graham Field’s objective remains the same: he is fully focused on making the route to his demise as pleasurable as possible.
And so the quest to his Chinese destiny begins. Now relieved of the whiskey, the road nevertheless continues to be an uphill struggle, not helped by the sub-zero winter temperatures. But being towed behind trucks and loaded on to buses evens out the ratio of endurance and pleasure.
Along the way, Graham proves that, with a little manipulation, a dream can become a reality. Above the suffocating city pollution, he finds a clearer view of China upon a 2,000-year-old trading route through Shangri-La to Tibet. This revered road tempts with a Chinese whisper: an alluring ascent that calls to be ridden in a solitary trance of wonderment.
As the author pushes on, he promises himself, should he reach that pinnacle of personal achievement, the run-off reward will be relaxation. With the descent into Thailand there is a change of gear. The gulf widens as he searches for the perfect beach retreat, refusing to be palmed off as a sex tourist.
One day at a time, that’s how a journey progresses, that’s how a diary is written and a tale is told. It’s far less daunting that way.
This audio book contains bonus outtakes from the recording sessions
