Sinopsis

Eugene W. Hilgard's "Soils" stands as a seminal text in the field of soil science, offering a comprehensive examination of the complex interplay between soil formation, composition, and ecology. Written in an accessible yet academically rigorous style, Hilgard adeptly navigates the intricate processes of soil development while situating them within the broader context of natural science and agriculture. His analytical approach is paired with vivid descriptions and illustrations that enhance the reader's understanding of soil as a critical component of the Earth's biosphere. Hilgard, often referred to as the "Father of Soil Science," brought to the text a wealth of experience from his extensive work in agronomy and geology. His passion for understanding the natural world was cultivated at a time when soil science was emerging as a distinct discipline. Drawing from practical field studies and scientific observation, Hilgard's scholarship reflects a dedication to improving agricultural practices and addressing the environmental challenges of his era. This book is recommended for scholars, practitioners, and students alike, serving as an essential reference for those invested in agricultural science, environmental studies, or ecology. Hilgard's "Soils" is not only a foundational text that offers vital insights into soil health and sustainability, but it also inspires a deeper appreciation for the intricate systems that sustain life on Earth.

Crystal structure and bonding are fundamental to understanding the physical properties of solid materials. A crystal is a solid material whose atoms, ions, or molecules are arranged in a highly ordered, repeating pattern extending in all three spatial dimensions. The smallest repeating unit of this structure is called the unit cell. The unit cell defines the crystal’s lattice parameters, including the edge lengths a,b,ca, b, c and the angles between them α,β,γ\alpha, \beta, \gamma. The crystal lattice is generated by translating the unit cell along its edges, forming the complete crystalline structure.
Crystals are classified according to their symmetry into seven crystal systems: cubic, tetragonal, orthorhombic, monoclinic, triclinic, hexagonal, and rhombohedral. Each system is characterized by specific symmetry elements such as mirror planes, rotation axes, and inversion centers. The Bravais lattices describe the 14 distinct lattice types that can fill three-dimensional space using translational symmetry. The atomic positions within a unit cell are described by fractional coordinates relative to the lattice vectors. In a face-centered cubic (FCC) lattice, atoms are located at the corners and the centers of the faces of the cube, while in a body-centered cubic (BCC) lattice, an additional atom is placed at the center of the cube.

Barons - Money Power and the...

Barons is the story of seven corporate titans, their rise to power, and the consequences for everyone else. Take Mike McCloskey, chairman of Fair Oaks Farms. In a few short decades, he went from managing a modest dairy herd to running the Disneyland of agriculture. Mike benefited from deregulation of the American food industry, a phenomenon that has consolidated wealth in the hands of select tycoons, and along the way, hollowed out the nation's rural towns and local businesses.

Along with Mike McCloskey, listeners will meet a secretive German family that took over the global coffee industry in less than a decade, relying on wealth traced back to the Nazis to gobble up countless independent roasters. And they will learn that in the food business, crime really does pay—especially when you can bribe and then double-cross the president of Brazil.

These, and the other stories in this book, are simply examples of the monopolies and ubiquitous corruption that today define American food. The tycoons profiled are hardly unique: many other companies have manipulated our lax laws and failed policies for their own benefit, to the detriment of our neighborhoods, livelihoods, and our democracy itself. A fair, healthy, and prosperous food industry is possible—if we take back power from the barons who have robbed us of it.
