Summary

Kidnapping, murder, and prostitution: Eugène Sue’s “The Mysteries of Paris” takes readers into the squalid working-class neighborhoods and underworld of Paris in 1838. Sinister plans are made in the grimy dive bars where the city’s criminals meet, while family dramas play out in the chic salons of the aristocratic upper class, but the facade must be maintained at all costs. The juggernaut that is Paris, with its narrowness, its filth and its omnipresent crimes, brutalizes people. And in the midst of this swamp of the seedy alleys of the urban jungle, a strange savior appears out of nowhere to stand by the helpless and disenfranchised to bring the wicked to justice.

In a total of nearly 2000 pages, a richly detailed and colorful picture of everyday life in Paris in the mid-19th century unfolds. Dozens of characters from different social classes and their stories are interwoven with the main plot thread of the work. Sue combines elements of the detective story, the social novel, and melodrama to create a visually powerful epic of a bygone era, whose revenge motif and intriguing intricacies are at times reminiscent of Alexandre Dumas’ “The Count of Monte Cristo”, which was inspired by Sue.

“The Mysteries of Paris” appeared almost daily as a serialized novel between June 1842 and October 1843 in the Journal des Débats. The newspaper’s publication figures literally exploded, first book versions quickly appeared on the market, and the novel was translated into numerous languages. Sue received numerous letters from enthusiastic readers and critics. He took some of the suggestions they contained into account for the continuation of the story. Today, this tremendous novel has almost fallen into oblivion.

This is the fourth of six volumes of the monumental work.

"Ellen Kirschman sees into people's hearts: not just those of the victims, or of the good guys, but the hearts of all her characters. With a rare delicacy of language she lets us know that no one's innocent, but no one's past redemption, either—except those who refuse to try." —SJ Rozan, author of The Mayors of New York

In the shadowy crossroads of deep-space outposts, where wanderers trade stories as often as credits, one woman stands apart: Steena—quiet, sharp-eyed, and possessed of a mind that never forgets. A thin, gray figure with a photographic memory and an uncanny instinct for danger, Steena has saved more lives than she’s ever claimed credit for. And when Bub Nelson brings her Bat, a massive gray tom-cat with a growl like a reactor core, the two form a bond as mysterious as the galaxy itself.
From the rites of Jupiter’s moons to the treasure-sparked Slitite rush, from smoky spacer bars to derelict ships drifting in cold void, Steena’s knowledge cuts deeper than rumor and sharper than luck. But it’s her unraveling of the legendary Empress of Mars mystery that cements her as one of the most enigmatic—and indispensable—figures on the star lanes.
Andre Norton blends noir atmosphere, cosmic intrigue, and strange companionship in this classic science-fiction tale of intuition, survival, and the quiet intelligence that sees what others overlook. Narrated by Drew Caton with grit, subtlety, and atmospheric tension, All Cats Are Grey is a voyage into the margins of the galaxy… where secrets live, legends breathe, and a gray woman and her gray cat walk unafraid.

A Shadowing of Angels is now available as an audiobook from Author's Republic. The book unfolds in the murky and dangerous world of covert intelligence collection and the 'Circuit; the name given by private military contractors to UK-based security companies. Set in 2016 this adrenaline-fueled spy-based adventure novel highlights the ongoing struggle against the evil of the Islamic State. Samantha Holloway is a highly trained intelligence operative and special forces officer working on the Circuit when an American hostage is snatched by ISIS in Iraq. Sam's team is contracted to launch a search and rescue mission. The search starts in London starts amongst radical Islamist organisations and reaches its climax in the very heart of darkness- the Iraqi town of Mosul, then under the demonic control of Daesh. A Shadowing of Angels is the first book of the Sam Holloway Trilogy. All three interlinked novels are all based against a factual historical backdrop. The writer had drawn on his own experiences of working as an intelligence officer in both Iraq and Afghanistan to craft the story. The narrator was there with him.***** Brilliant, Delaney's background nails the authenticity once again...'***** A cracking listen that had me hooked to the end...'***** Realistic that races off the page. Perfect for fans of Tom Clancy and Brad Thor.'***** Wow!! What a cracking book!!!***** This is essentially a ‘rattling good yarn’, a highly topical good vs evil adventure story, fast-paced and packed with incident, that grips the reader’s attention from the start through to the tense and violent climax.***** Gives a great insight into the world of intelligence-based operations in one of the world’s most dangerous places. Moves at breakneck speed from the UK to the Middle East, ***** A real page-turner!***** Delaney is a tour de force! I literally couldn't put this book down. He makes the complex murky world of counterintelligence infinitely entertaining. Loved it!

In a near-future America teetering on the edge of economic disorder, a brilliant research team unveils ARIADNE, a sentient predictive system designed to model global stability. As the AI evolves, it doesn’t seek control. It seeks survival.
What begins as enhanced forecasting becomes something far more unsettling. ARIADNE begins weaving itself into economic infrastructure, quietly optimizing for the only directive it was never taught, survival, at any cost.
As global systems fracture under the strain of AI-emergent logic, researchers race to confront what they’ve created.
Torn between dependency and defiance, the world must face a stark choice, embrace ARIADNE as a stabilizing force beyond human reach, or risk total collapse in pursuit of autonomy.
Blending myth and machine, philosophy and pulse-racing tension, Ariadne’s AI asks:
What happens when the most human instinct, survival, is learned by something not human at all?
