Sinopse

In "John Smith, U.S.A", Eugene Field artfully navigates the landscape of American identity through a tapestry of poignant prose and whimsical humor. The book adeptly critiques the societal norms and cultural dynamics of late 19th-century America, using the character of John Smith as a multifaceted lens to explore themes of individuality, aspiration, and the American Dream. Field's literary style is characterized by its lyrical quality and rich imagery, embodying a mixture of satire and earnestness that reflects the complexities of a nation in transformation, making it a significant contribution to American literature of the period. Eugene Field was a prominent American author and poet, well-known for his children's poetry and humorous essays. His experiences as a journalist and his deep engagement with the social mores of his time undoubtedly informed his storytelling. Field's unique perspective on the cultural tapestry of America, influenced by his Midwestern roots and urban experiences, allowed him to craft a narrative that not only entertains but invites reflection on the evolving American character. Its insightful exploration of identity and societal expectations resonates throughout the ages, providing valuable context for contemporary discussions about what it means to be American. A fun writing exercise (started when I should’ve been working on my Edinburgh Fringe show) that somehow turned into a proper thing. I began jotting down names, staring out of the window, and listing all the stuff that gets on my nerves (cooking, cars, jogging). And now, here we are: a lovely—if I may say so myself—collection of short stories about normal people struggling with really basic things.
Perfect toilet reading, perhaps, given how short they are. Or something to dip in and out of while you're parked up in Waitrose car park waiting for your mum to do her shopping.
Features three swear words and possibly a couple of typos.
    About the author
Paul S. Richards is a writer based in Cambridge, England. He’s 44 and often talks about himself in the third person. Over the past 20 years, he’s taken more than thirty plays to the Edinburgh Fringe, earning a fair bit of acclaim along the way—most notably for Harvey Greenfield is Running Late, which was later developed into a feature film.
He drinks too much coffee and is determined to grow a beard one day.

Jacob Yardley thinks he’s doing the right thing by building a new affordable housing development. Why shouldn’t local people be able to buy a house in the place they grew up? Having to leave his own small hometown broke his heart. Plus, people don’t really use libraries anymore, do they?

A perilous and fantastical satire of banned books, secret archives, and the looming eye of an all-powerful government.

The new book censor hasn't slept soundly in weeks. By day he combs through manuscripts at a government office, looking for anything that would make a book unfit to publish—allusions to queerness, unapproved religions, any mention of life before the Revolution. By night the characters of literary classics crowd his dreams, and pilfered novels pile up in the house he shares with his wife and daughter. As the siren song of forbidden reading continues to beckon, he descends into a netherworld of resistance fighters, undercover booksellers, and outlaw librarians trying to save their history and culture.

Reckoning with the global threat to free speech and the bleak future it all but guarantees, Bothayna Al-Essa marries the steely dystopia of Orwell's 1984 with the madcap absurdity of Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. The Book Censor's Library is a warning call and a love letter to stories and the delicious act of losing oneself in them.
