And a month later, after watching the first episode of a new show called Ben Casey, she decided that becoming a doctor was her way out. 
   
  At some point, Lynette noticed that all the real doctors and nurses who took care of her were Black and all the make-believe doctors and nurses on TV were white. Did it make a difference? Not to her. Over the next decade-plus, she focused on her studies. At a time when segregation was still alive and well in Virginia, she forged her mother’s signature on transfer papers so she could go to a better-resourced white school on the other side of town. Upon finishing high school, she got a full ride to Pittsburgh’s Chatham College. And after graduating Chatham with honors, she became a member of Tufts University School of Medicine's Class of 1978, one of seven Black women in her class. 
   
  Raw, candid, and inspiring, Escape Plan is the remarkable story of how, through perseverance and single-minded determination, a Black girl from the 1960s South faced down adversity, exceeded everyone’s expectations, and fulfilled her dreams.

  This is a non-fiction love story with a tragic end, played out in the 1960s and 70s in Worcestershire, on the Hampshire-Surrey border, in the old county of Huntingdonshire and in Wiltshire.
  
  On the way, the author sheds light on the Worcester of their courtship in the early 1960s with its pubs, coffee bars, new innovative Chinese and Indian restaurants, funfairs, a jazz club, concerts at the Gaumont Cinema and the Victor Sylvester Dance Studio free sessions on Friday nights, as well as the Cambridge of the mid-1970s and its noted resident Syd Barrett.
  
  The author is not immune to getting sidetracked into waxing lyrical about his other main interests: music and cars.
  
  Carole, with her quirky, childlike personality and lilting West Country banter, could turn any situation into a joyous, enchanting memory, and the author has tried to reflect this in her story. She had her own unique way of dealing with life's challenges, like marriage, cooking, childbirth, motherhood, her husband's "career moves" from one end of the country to the other, driving lessons, learning to swim, DIY, and being a parish councillor.
  
  In meeting her final daunting challenge, she showed great fortitude, courage and consideration for others.

  The inspiration for this novel came to Lesley-Anne when she realised at her Father's funeral that although she'd known him her whole life, she'd never taken the time to ask him more about his life before she was born. She resolved not to let the same thing happen to her children, and that she would therefore tell the story of how she was born in Brazil and grew up in Nigeria, Switzerland, boarding school, Kenya, nursing, up to her marriage in 1979 and the birth of her two children. The thread that weaves through and holds together the story is Lesley's volatile relationship with her mother, which stands in contrast to her close relationship with her grandmother with which many people can identify. This memoir serves as an example for others to follow to leave as part of their legacy and share their lives with their children and descendents before they've passed away and taken their memories with them.

  It is extremely rare for a pilot to complete two military flight schools, but Chuck Moore did just that. He first went to the US Army flight school in 1967. Due to the high demand for helicopter pilots for the Vietnam War, they were accepting high school graduates. After the war, he attended college on the GI Bill, qualifying him for the US Navy flight school. His father would have been very proud because he was a B-24 radio operator in WW2, earning a Distinguished Flying Cross. Unfortunately, he was not alive to share the experience of his son becoming a combat pilot. It would have been an amazing experience to fly together in Chuck's airplane and helicopter in Alaska. If you know a Vietnam infantry combat veteran, ask him about the Cobra gunships and how they felt when they showed up on the battlefield.
