Synopsis

Unexpected Stage Reactions explores the unpredictable world of live performance, focusing on how performers react when things go awry. From technical glitches to unruly audience members, the book examines pivotal moments of disruption and the diverse responses they elicit. It highlights the resilience required of actors, musicians, and comedians when faced with the unexpected, revealing the human element beneath the polished surface of the performing arts. One intriguing fact explored is how a performer's reaction can significantly impact their career, turning a potential disaster into a memorable triumph or a regrettable misstep. The book also touches on the evolution of audience expectations and cultural norms, and how these have shaped both the types of disruptions that occur and the strategies performers use to address them. The book categorizes various types of performance disruptions, from technical malfunctions to medical emergencies, and then presents case studies of specific incidents. These cases are grouped according to the type of response, such as humorous deflection or direct confrontation, offering a taxonomy for understanding the spectrum of stage reactions. Drawing from archival footage, interviews, and research, the author analyzes body language and vocal inflections to gain deeper insights into performers' emotional states and decision-making. Ultimately, Unexpected Stage Reactions provides practical advice and exercises to help performers develop their own strategies for navigating unexpected challenges, emphasizing the importance of preparation, adaptability, and audience awareness.

In this unusual, engaging, and intimate collection of personal essays, Lambda Literary Award finalist Tania De Rozario recalls growing up as a queer, brown, fat girl in Singapore, blending memoir with elements of history, pop culture, horror films, and current events to explore the nature of monsters and what it means to be different.
Tania De Rozario was just twelve years old when she was gay-exorcised. Convinced that her boyish style and demeanor were a sign of something wicked, her mother and a pair of her church friends tried to “banish the evil” from Tania. That day, the young girl realized that monsters weren’t just found in horror tales. They could lurk anywhere—including your own family and community—and look just like you.
Dinner on Monster Island is Tania’s memoir of her life and childhood in Singapore—where she discovered how difference is often perceived as deviant, damaged, disobedient, and sometimes, demonic. As she pulls back the veil on life on the small island, she reveals the sometimes kind, sometimes monstrous side of all of us. Intertwined with her experiences is an analysis of the role of women in horror. Tania looks at films and popular culture such as Carrie, The Witch, and The Ring to illuminate the ways in which women are often portrayed as monsters, and how in real life, monsters are not what we think.
Moving and lyrical, written with earnest candor, and leavened with moments of humor and optimism, Dinner on Monster Island is a deeply personal examination of one woman’s experience grappling with her identity and a fantastic analysis of monsters, monstrous women and the worlds in which they live.

In The Torture of Love, the second volume of The Revisionist series, Michael A. Delitala guides readers through a deeply emotional journey of love, heartbreak, and self-discovery. Rather than focusing on the individuals from his past, the narrative explores the recurring patterns that define these relationships. Each person represents a different emotional cycle that keeps him tethered to familiar habits—until he learns to break free. This memoir isn't just about romance; it's about the growth that comes from recognizing and breaking emotional patterns to find one's authentic self.
Michael A. Delitala begins with reflections on a strict upbringing, which limited his ability to express individuality. This foundation sets the stage for the romantic struggles that follow—where passion, insecurity, and emotional distance become familiar themes. The women in his life are presented as symbols of repeated patterns, not named as individuals, emphasizing the idea that we often fall into familiar cycles in love until we learn to change. By reflecting on these relationships, The Revisionist discovers how breaking these patterns leads to personal growth and deeper self-understanding.

J Edgar Hoover and Allen Dulles:...

No single figure in 20th century American history inspires such opposing opinions as J. Edgar Hoover, the iconic first director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. In his time, he was arguably the most powerful non-elected figure in the U.S. government. Serving under 8 presidents (and outliving 2 of them), he remains the longest-serving head of a major government office. In essence, Hoover died as he began - a civil servant, having been appointed by the Attorney General and serving at the pleasure of the president.
By the 1960s and 1970s Hoover the hero had become Hoover the villain.  Various exposes and investigations revealed a darker side to the legend, one that included serious violations of the civil liberties of individuals. Hoover’s G-Men, it was discovered, engaged in illegal break-ins and wiretaps of suspected subversives; they wrote fake letters that undermined the reputations of public individuals; they paid informants for information and push the groups they belonged to into committing illegal acts. It was alleged that Hoover led a personal vendetta against Martin Luther King, Jr., and the entire civil rights movement. Hoover, it was said, had stayed in office so long by gathering secret files of damaging information about politicians (including presidents).
To this day, Allen Dulles’ eight-year tenure in that office is the longest, and as one of the country’s leading experts in international law, intelligence, and spycraft, he became renowned for his unwavering anti-communist ideology and readiness to take decisive measures to counter what he perceived as a menace to American safety. As such, it would be Dulles who sanctioned many of the CIA’s most notorious operations, including the ousting of Iran's democratically elected government in 1953, spying and experimentation on American citizens, and the disastrous Bay of Pigs.
