Sinossi

Unbelievable Movie Stunts explores the high-stakes world of Hollywood stunts, revealing the evolution, techniques, and dangers behind cinema's most breathtaking moments. Delving into film history, the book examines the critical role of practical effects and the risks stunt performers undertook for entertainment. Early filmmaking often lacked adequate safety measures, leading to serious injuries and even fatalities, highlighting the changing attitudes toward on-set safety over time.

The book traces the development of stunt work from the silent film era to the age of CGI, showcasing key stunts, performers, and techniques. One intriguing aspect covered is how the pursuit of realism has sometimes led to tragic outcomes, emphasizing the ethical considerations involved. The central argument focuses on how the history of Hollywood stunts reflects society's evolving relationship with risk and spectacle.

Beginning with the definition of a "movie stunt," the narrative progresses through specific eras, such as the action-packed 1980s and the modern era of digital effects. By drawing on first-hand accounts, production notes, and historical footage, the book offers a comprehensive look at the stunt industry, including current safety regulations and the future of stunt work.

The 1921 Tulsa Race Riot was the country's bloodiest civil disturbance of the century. Thirty city blocks were burned to the ground, perhaps 150 died, and the prosperous black community of Greenwood, Oklahoma, was turned to rubble.Alfred L. Brophy draws on his own extensive research into contemporary accounts and court documents to chronicle this devastating riot, showing how and why the rule of law quickly eroded. Brophy shines his lights on mob violence and racism run amok, both on the night of the riot and the following morning. Equally important, he shows how the city government and police not only permitted looting, shootings, and the burning of Greenwood, but actively participated in it by deputizing white citizens haphazardly, giving out guns and badges, or sending men to arm themselves. Likewise, the National Guard acted unconstitutionally, arresting every black resident they found, leaving property vulnerable to the white mob.Brophy's stark narrative concludes with a discussion of reparations for victims of the riot through lawsuits and legislative action. That case has implications for other reparations movements, including reparations for slavery. This updated edition features a new foreword by Randall Kennedy.

    Empedocles - The Four Elements...

Empedocles, a philosopher and poet from the ancient Greek city of Acragas (modern-day Agrigento, Sicily), lived during the 5th century BCE and is often regarded as one of the most original thinkers of his time. His life and works remain an intriguing fusion of science, mysticism, and poetry. Though much of what we know about Empedocles comes from fragments of his writings, his ideas have had a profound and lasting influence on philosophy, science, and even religion.

Empedocles is best known for his theory of the four elements—earth, air, fire, and water—which he posited as the fundamental building blocks of the universe. Unlike his predecessors, who sought to explain the world through a singular substance (such as water for Thales or air for Anaximenes), Empedocles argued that these four elements combined and separated through two cosmic forces: Love (Philia) and Strife (Neikos). Love brings the elements together, fostering harmony and unity, while Strife pulls them apart, creating division and chaos. This cyclical process of combination and separation underlies the ongoing changes in the cosmos.

In addition to his materialistic philosophy, Empedocles incorporated spiritual and mystical elements into his worldview. He believed in the transmigration of souls, suggesting that human beings and other living creatures are bound to an endless cycle of reincarnation. According to Empedocles, the soul is trapped in a cycle of birth, death, and rebirth, and it can achieve liberation through purification and virtuous living. His philosophical system thus integrated both natural and ethical concerns, urging individuals to live in harmony with the forces of the cosmos and pursue a life of virtue.

    Politics and the English Language

This audiobook is narrated by an AI Voice.
MOST people who bother with the matter at all would admit that the English language is in a bad way, but it is generally assumed that we cannot by conscious action do anything about it. Our civilization is decadent, and our language—so the argument runs—must inevitably share in the general collapse. It follows that any struggle against the abuse of language is a sentimental archaism, like preferring candles to electric light or hansom cabs to aeroplanes. Underneath this lies the half-conscious belief that language is a natural growth and not an instrument which we shape for our own purposes.
Now, it is clear that the decline of a language must ultimately have political and economic causes: it is not due simply to the bad influence of this or that individual writer. But an effect can become a cause, reinforcing the original cause and producing the same effect in an intensified form, and so on indefinitely. A man may take to drink because he feels himself to be a failure, and then fail all the more completely because he drinks. It is rather the same thing that is happening to the English language. It becomes ugly and inaccurate because our thoughts are foolish, but the slovenliness of our language makes it easier for us to have foolish thoughts. The point is that the process is reversible. Modern English, especially written English, is full of bad habits which spread by imitation and which can be avoided if one is willing to take the necessary trouble. If one gets rid of these habits one can think more clearly, and to think clearly is a necessary first step towards political regeneration: so that the fight against bad English is not frivolous and is not the exclusive concern of professional writers. I will come back to this presently, and I hope that by that time the meaning of what I have said here will have become clearer. Meanwhile, here are five specimens of the English language as it is now habitually written.
