Sinopsis

Parade History explores the captivating story of parades, revealing them as more than just festive displays. These public celebrations, ubiquitous across the globe, are examined through the dual lenses of historical development and performing arts. The book traces their evolution from ancient rituals to expressions of cultural identity, highlighting how parades reflect social, political, and cultural shifts. For instance, the elaborate civic and royal parades of the Renaissance demonstrate how power and artistry intertwined in public spectacle. The book progresses chronologically, moving from the ancient world through the medieval period to the rise of modern parades, exemplified by events like Mardi Gras and the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. These key examples illustrate broader trends influenced by industrialization and mass media. By analyzing parades' visual spectacle, music, and choreography, the book reveals how these events shape societal values, beliefs, and historical narratives. This unique approach, combining historical analysis with performance studies, offers readers a deeper understanding of the cultural significance of parades.

In Speak of It, Marcos McPeek Villatoro explores how he channeled his Latino roots to come to terms with the childhood sexual abuse he suffered at the hands of a relative in his home in Appalachia, and he recounts his ensuing struggle with trauma and mental illness.

The son of a Salvadoran mother and Scotch Irish mechanic father, Marcos spent much of his life trying to break away from his Southern Appalachian past and the trauma experienced there and striving to get closer to his Salvadoran heritage. His journey includes steeping himself in the Spanish language and Latin American literature, especially the work of Gabriel García Marquez; a stint in Nicaragua with Witness for Peace, followed by missionary work in Guatemala; and social-justice work with Mexican migrant farmworkers in Alabama. Each experience brought him closer to understanding where he came from and to forging an identity as a whole self in the wake of trauma.

Riveting, horrifying, moving, and inspiring, Speak of It is a testament to the healing power of language, books, and identity.

    How the Paranormal Affects...

My career was being trained as and working as an Engineer mostly for Fortune 100 companies.
In parallel with that I’ve also been working on spiritual enlightenment and developing my paranormal abilities for the last fifty years.
This unusual combination of skills has led me to my passion of writing about the paranormal and many “out of the box” concepts and topics. I’ve actually written twelve books about the paranormal based on my experiences and research into these topics.
One topic which has always fascinated me has been how many paranormal experiences are usually interpreted by mental health professionals as delusional and mentally ill behaviors.
My thinking is that most people have spiritual and paranormal abilities and these cause experiences which can overwhelm some people to make them fit the diagnosis of them having mental illnesses.
Certainly there are a lot of legitimate mental illnesses which cause the need for treatments by mental health professionals.
But what happens when persons having these experiences may be normal and stable in their other behaviors but these experiences are so far beyond the norms of society that others think they are “crazy” and therefore treat them as such?
I’ve heard and read a number of stories over the years where I wonder if they were real experiences which might have just caused the person who lived them to have a nervous breakdown.
This book is my effort to help people understand the interfaces of real paranormal experiences and mental illness and how to tell which is which.
Also, what additional therapies can be used to help people who may be overwhelmed by these experiences?

Killer in the House - Ten Days...

A meticulously researched page-turner about one of the Philadelphia suburbs' most shocking twentieth-century crimes. A gunman broke into Jack and Peggy Abt's house moments after the last family member left for the day. He took a seat in the living room and waited for eleven hours.

People expect things to go bump in the night, but, in 1976, most adults never fretted a stranger would invade the sanctity of their home in the middle of the day. Six people walked through the kitchen door one by one that afternoon, all expecting nothing more than a Friday night fish fry. The killer leaped out from behind the living room wall over and over and over and over and over and over again. He fired at them at a distance of less than eighteen inches. After each murder, he dragged the body to the basement. Then he sped back upstairs to tidy up for his next victim.

This story from a news reporter who was on the scene ninety minutes after the killer slipped away is built from autopsy reports, prison records, IQ tests, trial transcripts, the killer's own eidetic confession, interviews with witnesses, and the author's experiences covering the case. With that research, it was possible to reconstruct the six murders, minute by minute. Tension builds as the six innocent victims turn the kitchen doorknob at 3:30, 4:15, 4:40, 5:15, 6:10 and at 6:30.

    Plagues and Their Aftermath -...

From a plague in Athens during the Peloponnesian War in 430 BCE, to another in 540 that wiped out half the population of the Roman empire, down through the Black Death in the Middle Ages and on through the 1918 flu epidemic (which killed between 50 and 100 million people) and this century's deadly SARS outbreak, plagues have been a much more relentless fact of life than many realize.

The legacy of epidemics, Brian Michael Jenkins observes, is not only one of lives lost but of devastated economies and social disorder, all of which have severe political repercussions.

Thus, each chapter of Plagues and Their Aftermath draws on those historical precursors to focus on one particular aspect of their aftermath: What happens to political systems? What happens in the area of crime and terrorism? Do wars happen? What are the effects on cultures? What was the impact of widespread fear and public hysteria, of increased suspicion and scapegoating, of the spread of rumors and conspiracy theories?

Jenkins's sobering analysis is riveting and thought-provoking listening for general listeners and specialists alike, and throws welcome light into what many fear is a dark future.
