Sinopse

Movie Franchise Wars explores the high-stakes world of film franchises, dissecting the business strategies and creative clashes that determine success in Hollywood. It examines how franchises balance commercial demands with artistic vision to capture audiences and dominate the box office. The book reveals how studios allocate resources and manage risk, highlighting the financial models and investment strategies crucial for long-term profitability. A key insight is understanding how carefully planned strategies, rather than mere chance, drive franchise dominance. The book analyzes narrative choices and world-building techniques that sustain audience engagement across multiple films and media platforms. It also examines the evolution of fan culture and its impact on shaping franchise trajectories. By integrating business analysis with cultural and creative perspectives, Movie Franchise Wars offers a unique approach, moving beyond simple explanations to understand why some franchises flourish while others falter.

The book progresses from the economic principles of franchise filmmaking to narrative structures, and finally, the cultural impact of these cinematic universes. This comprehensive approach provides valuable insights for film students, media scholars, and industry professionals, offering a framework for understanding the complex dynamics that shape the film industry. Through case studies like Marvel Cinematic Universe, Star Wars, and Harry Potter, the book illustrates key concepts and the application of analytical frameworks in franchise filmmaking. It also considers the role of fan communities and online forums in influencing studio decisions.

The following is the audio track for Don't Be a Sucker, a 1943 anti-fascism propaganda film financed and produced by the United States Army Signal Corps, and shot at the Warners studio. The film stars Paul Lukas, Felix Bressart, Bob Bailey, Kurt Kreuger, and narrated by Lloyd Nolan. It follows a young American Freemason taken in by the message of a soap-box orator who asserts that all good jobs in the country are being taken by minorities, domestic and foreign. He then falls into a conversation with a refugee professor who tells him of the pattern of events that brought Hitler to power in Germany and how Germany's anti-democratic groups split the country into helpless minorities, each hating the other. The professor concludes by pointing out that America is composed of many minorities, but all are united as Americans. The film was re-issued in 1946 following the end of World War II.

It’s October 1977, and the Rolling Stones are in a Paris recording studio. They’re under siege. Keith Richards’s legal troubles after his arrest for heroin possession threaten the band’s future, and the broad consensus among rock aficionados is that the band will never again reach the heights of Exile on Main Street. But Mick Jagger is writing lyrics inspired by the year he has just spent in New York City, where he was hanging out with the punks at CBGB and with the glitterati at Studio 54. And new bandmember Ron Wood is helping Richards recapture the two-guitar groove that the band had been missing since the Brian Jones era. The result? Some Girls, the band’s response both to punk rock and to disco, an album that crackles with all the energy, decadence, and violence of New York in the 1970s. Weaving together the history of the band and the city, Cyrus R. K. Patell traces the genesis and legacy of the album that Jagger would later call the band’s best since Let It Bleed.

Songs that sell the most copies become hits, but some of those hits become something more—iconic recordings that not only inspire a generation but also change the direction of music. In Anatomy of 55 More Songs, based on his column for the Wall Street Journal, music journalist and historian Marc Myers tells the story behind fifty-five rock, pop, R&B, country, and soul-gospel hits through intimate interviews with the artists who wrote and recorded them.

Part oral history, part musical analysis, Anatomy of 55 More Songs ranges from Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Bad Moon Rising" to Dionne Warwick's "Walk On By," The Beach Boys' "Good Vibrations," and Black Sabbath's "Paranoid." Bernie Taupin recalls how he wrote the lyrics to Elton John's "Rocket Man;" Joan Jett remembers channeling her rage against how she had been unfairly labeled and treated as a female rocker into "Bad Reputation;" and Ozzy Osbourne, Elvis Costello, Bob Weir, Sheryl Crow, Alice Cooper, Roberta Flack, John Mellencamp, Keith Richards, Carly Simon, and many others reveal the emotions and technique behind their major works.

Through an absorbing chronological, song-by-song analysis of the most memorable post-war hits, Anatomy of 55 More Songs provides a sweeping look at the evolution of pop music between 1964 and today.
