  Sumer: The History of the Cities...

  When American archaeologists discovered a collection of cuneiform tablets in Iraq in the late 19th century, they were confronted with a language and a people who were at the time only scarcely known to even the most knowledgeable scholars of ancient Mesopotamia: the Sumerians. The exploits and achievements of other Mesopotamian peoples, such as the Assyrians and Babylonians, were already known to a large segment of the population through the Old Testament and the nascent field of Near Eastern studies had unraveled the enigma of the Akkadian language that was widely used throughout the region in ancient times, but the discovery of the Sumerian tablets brought to light the existence of the Sumerian culture, which was the oldest of all the Mesopotamian cultures. 
  Although the Sumerians continue to get second or even third billing compared to the Babylonians and Assyrians, perhaps because they never built an empire as great as the Assyrians or established a city as enduring and great as Babylon, they were the people who provided the template of civilization that all later Mesopotamians built upon. The Sumerians are credited with being the first people to invent writing, libraries, cities, and schools in Mesopotamia (Ziskind 1972, 34), and many would argue that they were the first people to create and do those things anywhere in world. 
  For a people so great it is unfortunate that their accomplishments and contributions, not only to Mesopotamian civilization but to civilization in general, largely go unnoticed by the majority of the public. Perhaps the Sumerians were victims of their own success; they gradually entered the historical record, established a fine civilization, and then slowly submerged into the cultural patchwork of their surroundings.

  From his days at Princeton University as a member of the faculty, dean, and provost, and his time as a faculty member and president at Harvard University, Neil L. Rudenstine has been uniquely positioned to observe the changes that have occurred in higher education over the past few decades. In this book, he draws on his various roles to present an educator's inside account of the modern university. More than that, Our Contentious Universities is a personal history of how our current campus climate of antagonism evolved.Starting with his perceptions of the anti-Vietnam War events at Columbia, Princeton, and Berkeley, Rudenstine identifies a pattern that was characterized by students protesting against institutions because of purported university support for the Vietnam War. Not surprisingly, once the Vietnam War ended, the protests ceased. In contrast, Rudenstine reveals how contemporary campus conflicts essentially differ in nature from the '60s protests. Since the issues that spark these present protests―such as climate change, conservative judicial opinions, lack of gun control, the Hamas-Israeli war―are not readily soluble problems, there can be no easily defined end to the action. Rudenstine also depicts how universities themselves have changed substantially over the past few decades. The institutions have not only evolved into a collection of decentralized quasi-autonomous departments in competition with other centers and initiatives for resources but also nurtured a highly diverse population of faculty and students with a variety of backgrounds and perspectives already at odds before they even encounter each other on campus. Combining an analysis of how universities transformed with an examination of how protests changed, the book argues that it is actually the internal sources of division and conflict that are at the root of contentious campus environments.

  "An Enquiry Concerning the Principles of Morals" is a philosophical treatise written by the Scottish philosopher David Hume. The work was first published in 1751 and is one of Hume's most important works, along with "A Treatise of Human Nature" and "Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion". 
  In "An Enquiry Concerning the Principles of Morals", Hume explores the nature and foundation of morality. He argues that moral judgments are not based on reason, but on sentiment, or a natural feeling of approval or disapproval that we have towards certain actions or behaviors. He maintains that moral distinctions are not objective features of the world, but rather the products of human psychology. 
  Hume also argues that morality is not derived from religion or any other external source, but rather is grounded in human nature and the natural sentiments that we have towards others. He emphasizes the importance of sympathy, or the ability to feel and understand the emotions of others, in the development of moral sentiments. 
  Overall, "An Enquiry Concerning the Principles of Morals" is a significant contribution to the field of moral philosophy and continues to be widely studied and debated by scholars today.

  Frederick Stewart, born in Buchan, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, was the first headmaster of the HK Govt Central School for Boys (now Queen's College) and second Inspector of Schools. He was considered by contemporaries as the Founder of Hong Kong Government Education. At the Central School, his consistent policy was to educate pupils in Western knowledge, while preserving their Chinese identity, and he insisted on equal time for Chinese and English studies. A career change was forced by the intervention of Governor John Pope Hennessy who wished the teaching of English to be given prominence. Subsequently, Stewart, a modest and unassuming man, popular within Hong Kong and also at the Colonial Office, became Police Magistrate, Registrar General, then Colonial Secretary, acting as Governor of Hong Kong on several occasions. By the end of his life, Stewart’s intimate knowledge of Hong Kong was considered unequalled among non-Chinese in Hong Kong at the time.
