Sinopsis

He paused, and gathered up the blind member. "Isn' t this a hell of a case fo' yo' , sah?" A curve of flesh began to peel from it. Pree-pree-pree. As if it were frying. Frying flesh. The nail jerked out of place, hot, bright blood began to stream from it. Around the spot white marl dust clung in grainy cakes. Now, red, new blood squirted—spread over the whole toe—and the dust became crimson...FROM THE BOOKS.

Virginia Woolf's Mrs Dalloway is a landmark of modernist literature, unfolding over the course of a single day in post-World War I London. Clarissa Dalloway, preparing for a party, reflects on her past, her choices, and the fragile beauty of the present moment. The narrative, moving fluidly through different consciousnesses, captures both the private interior world of thought and the larger currents of history and society. The novel is celebrated for its stream-of-consciousness technique and its delicate exploration of memory, identity, and mortality. Woolf juxtaposes the quiet dignity of everyday life with the lingering trauma of war, weaving a tapestry of voices that illuminates the complexity of human experience. Mrs Dalloway remains a profound meditation on time, love, and the meaning of existence.

A novice leaves his abbey for the world in 1366, joins a company of English archers under a knight of the old school, and marches into France where chivalry is already a business. Doyle thought this his best book by far and was baffled that readers wanted detective stories instead; he researched the fourteenth century for a year and put the longbow, not the sword, at the center. Fifty-three plates of castle, siege, and pilgrim scenes, among them works by Courbet and Meissonier, follow the archers from abbey walls to the fortresses of France.

Frederick Douglass' second autobiography, My Bondage and My Freedom, significantly revises key portions of his original 1845 Narrative and extends the story of his life to include his experiences as a traveling lecturer in the United States as well as England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. Douglass also frames his second autobiography differently, replacing the prefatory notes by white abolitionists William Lloyd Garrison and Wendell Phillips with an introduction by the prominent black abolitionist Dr. James M'Cune Smith. While the appendix to his first autobiography serves primarily as a clarification about Douglass' views on religion, the appendix to My Bondage and My Freedom includes a letter to a former master, Thomas Aulda ship captainand various excerpts from Douglass' abolitionist lectures. These prefaces and appendices provide the reader with a sense of the larger historical movement(s) in which Douglass plays an important part. Douglass later expanded and republished this autobiography twice more, in 1881 and 1892, both under the title Life and Times of Frederick Douglass.

John Webster was a later contemporary of Shakespeare , and The Duchess of Malfi , Webster's best known play, is considered among the best of the period. It appears to have been first performed in 1612–13 at the Blackfriars before moving on to the larger and more famous Globe Theatre, and was later published in 1623. The play is loosely based on a real Duchess of Amalfi, a widow who marries beneath her station. On learning of this, her brothers become enraged and vow their revenge. Soon the intrigue, deceit, and murders begin. Marked by the period's love of spectacular violence, each character exacts his revenge, and in turn suffers vengeance at the hands of others. Coming after Shakespeare's equally sanguine Hamlet and Kyd's The Spanish Tragedy , Webster's The Duchess of Malfi brings to a close the era of the great Senecan tragedies of blood and revenge. As the Jacobean period progressed, the spectacle became more violent and dark, reflecting the public's growing dissatisfaction with the corruption of King James' court. John Webster (died 1625) was one of the foundational figures of Western literary tradition. Their work has endured across generations and continues to be read and studied worldwide. The dramatic works of earlier centuries formed the backbone of a rich theatrical tradition. The Duchess Of Malfi was written to be performed as well as read, and its theatrical power remains fully evident on the page, with characters, conflict, and language that leap to life.
